I find the movie vastly superior in every single way, it has better tone, better aesthetic, better acting and better comedy by far. The only reason the tv show wins in any category is because it had more time to develop and adapt each part of the story and that only goes to say that tv show is a better media for the story, but i had completely forgotten i even watched this whole show and now that i do i still remember nothing from it, it was boring and unremarkable most of the time and the one thing that kept me going was my love for the books and curiosity to see scenes brought to life and. to be fair, i don't really remember what my favorite scenes from the books looked like in the series at all, it was very forgetable, the two things i remember are that there was some gay stuff that got me hyped and Carmelita Spats shoving her face in a cake. Carmelita and Esme were great, tho, I don't remember scenes, but I remember they were both spot on and delighful. Anyway, it's a shame, 'cause both the movies and the books are super memorable and dear to my heart.

As far as the movie goes, I would have to comment on the subject of Liam Aiken. He was at the end of puberty at the time as we can hear in his voice, while Klaus was only 12 in the first 6 books celebrating his 13th birthday in a jail cell in the village of foul devotees. The TV series picked a younger actor who's voice only starts dropping after the long time sitting on the bench, which adds to the comedy of the moment.
Picky readers note Klaus's glasses only being for reading in the movie as opposed to being worn 24-7 in the books and TV series.
Though Liam Aiken has seen his own house burned to a crisp as did his character. What are the odds of that?
The train scene from the movie was pointless.
Lastly, I must say, I love the emphasis on VFD and Larry.

I like the movie's steampunkish style more and absolutely adore Meryl Streep as aunt Josephine. Jim Carrey's Olaf also fits a tiny bit better when it comes to looks. Gotta love how he's so tall and lanky while Neil is more of normal height. Carrey also feels a bit more intimidating to me, but I can't really put my finger on the reason why.
The movie's downfall was combining 3 books into one movie and changing some tiny but crucial details, like not giving Klaus glasses for some reason. I know a movie series of about 12 movies would've been way too much, but combining 2 books instead of 3 into one movie might've worked out, if they intended to adapt the whole series.

It's a bit not fair given the TV series had alot more time to go in depth. And I think the time the movie had, they did a amazing job! Sure the series is going to be good because they can get into alot more. But idk, I feel like it isn't fair given one is alot longer then the other! But they both are good! Although, I grew up with the movie and probably will always love the movie more!

I gotta pick the movie over the show just because of the tone, the music, and the design. The sets and costumes were darker and more detailed when compared to the series. I hate how few people actually enjoy the 2004 Version. While I didnt buy the series until 2014 Afterwords when I went back and watched it. It felt like a great adaption of that world. I feel the only mistake made was the studio wanted to make it a franchise instead of a show. And while Netflix did give us a fleshed out series the world felt goofy

This tv series is absolute GARBAGE! You cant even compare this to the movie. You have to be joking? I mean you cant even be serious about comparing the two. NPH is the worst Count Olaf ever. NPH is too freaking short and is beyond boring. Its like he was sleep acting. You people have no taste and clearly do not appreciate an actor such as Jim Carrey.

To me JC as Olaf feels like there are three distinct characters, whilst NPH as Olaf always feels like Olaf, albeit in a variety of disguises. In part that's the make-up, as he's almost too well disguised in the film, but I get the impression that the film Olaf must be a much better actor than the TV show Olaf too.

The series was trash and the acting was too. Neil could never do Olaf the way Jim did. Tie my ass. Plus, the goth setting and aesthetic in the movie was PERFECT. The series told the story more in depth but it just wasnt for me. Lastly, the movie had an AMAZING star cast.

In my opinion you can't really pit them against each other considering the TV show was able to finish the series and the movie wasn't you don't have enough material from the movie to actually pit it against the TV show maybe if they had finished the movie series

I think the problem with the movie is that they tried to fit a story described in 13 books in just two hours
I mean its book was described in 2 episodes(40 minutes each)

Compare 1hr 48 min movie with a series that runs 3 seasons is idiotic; like compare is a 3-seasons series is more faithful to a book trilogy than a 108 minutes films. Thum bows for being silly over belief.

I think the series was more well put together and seems to have a higher budget. But the movie had a few things that were really cool, the overall aesthetic they were going for and the intro with the elf.

i havent watched the 2004 film but so far imo im disappointed that the tv series took away the gothic flair the siblings had in their fashion. they made the siblings look too prim and proper.

The show is crafted much more intricately and carefully, so I will say it's better than the movie, but Jim Carrey's performance as Count Olaf is just flawless and cannot be topped.
