Love can bloom from very unexpected places. For this list, well be going over the films that defy the conventions of typical romantic films, or lie outside of it entirely, yet still have compelling romantic themes. We wont be including any animated films, though, as cute as romances like WALL-E are. Our list includes Harold and Maude, Edward Scissorhands, Lars and the Real Girl, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Punch-Drunk Love, and more! Join MsMojo as we count down our picks for the Top 10 Unconventional Romance Movies. 10. Edward Scissorhands (1990) 9. Harold and Maude (1971) 8. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) 7. The Fountain (2006) 6. Lars and the Real Girl (2007) 5. Warm Bodies (2013) 4. Her (2013) 3, 2 & 1?

Does Kate and Leopold and Bicentennial Man count.
Since
Kate and Leopold was about a 19th century bachelor who falls for his great great grandsons ex girlfriend Kate.
Bicentennial Man: An android falls in love with a woman who's the granddaughter of his former master.
Other films that should have been added
Mannequin: A lonely shop clerk falls in love with a mannequin who comes to life at night. It's sequel she comes alive once the necklace is off.
Splash: An unlucky in love man falls for a woman who is actually a mermaid.

Mannequin should have been on this list. It's a 1980s romcom about a department store clerk falling in love with a mannequin he made and is reincarnated Egyptian princess that only appears human at night and with her creator alone.

Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind is my favourite film ever its so sad and beautiful the opening music makes me cry every time the beautiful sadness of the melody makes you really connect with Joels sad longing for love, life.
reply

One of my favorites is, Cairo Time. There is an obvious attraction between Tareq and Juliette, but they don't pursue a romance because she's married and he happens to be her husband's friend/former colleague.

To me this is not unconventional, it's real. It is every love story I've ever heard in real life. Hollywood has brainwashed you so much you think this is odd. I feel sorry for you.
reply

I cannot stress how much I love Harold and Maude & Warm Bodies (the romance film Twilight wishes it was. They're incredibly unorthodox love stories, and I love them for it.
reply

David and Lisa, Ghost World, and Electric Dreams (also with Bud Cort of Harold & Maude) should all have been on this list and MY honorable mention is Wristcuters.

I love Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, that was the movie that helped me while I was going through a breakup. But I still hate my ex LOL

Her deserved to top the list! One of the best and most original Sci-Fi/Romance movies. It's utterly beautiful to say the least!
reply

wow, every movie on this list is anchored on a white male main character with a white female love interest. HOW UNCONVENTIONAL!
reply

Love Harold and Maude! _Honorable Mentions_ Splash with Tom Hanks, Daryl Hannah, 50 First Dates with Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore
reply

Bicentennial man is more of a romance than ex machina. Also I like Comet, which should have been given a honorable mention.
reply

Where's The Shape of Water?
Moonrise Kingdom?
Groundhog Day?
Silver Linings Playbook?
