Its rare that a series remains consistent throughout its entire run, but these TV shows that only had one bad season came awful close. Well be looking at various beloved and critically acclaimed TV shows that are known to have one infamous season that tarnished the overall reputation of the series. Well only be including shows with brief, season-long dips in quality, so shows like The Simpsons that suffered a permanent depression and loss of quality will not be included. MsMojo ranks the TV shows that only had one bad season. Which TV show do you think only had one bad season?

Disagree about Arrow. Nothing wrong with season 4.
HIMYM was great it's whole run (like any show it had its weak points at times) all except that awful, I-refuse-to-accept-it-as-canon finale.
I liked season 4 of Buffy minus Riley. It had my fave episode since I was a kid (Something Blue) which was followed by the classic Hush.
I actually enjoyed the first half of season 8 of Game of Thrones and loved most of the show in general. The writers I guess just forgot how to write a proper story at all by the last few eps?
Agree Parks and Rec and DEFINITELY agree That 70's Show (I just ignore the whole final season)
There are a lot of shows where the final or final few seasons could make this list. Writers need to learn when to end shows before they run out of ideas and completely destroy the show. It's nice being able to rewatch a show without trying to forget the disappointment you know is coming later (imo Gotham is a good example of this even with the ending a bit rushed since they had to squeeze in a short final season)

I personally have to disagree with Season 4 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. While Season 4 was okay at best, I think it had more seasons that were just considered okay.
I am honestly surprised Season 6 wasn't the one on this list. While I don't hate Season 6, it is definitely considered one of the shows weakest seasons. It was a lot darker than previous seasons, it's ark was a little shotty, and it came after a season that was supposed to the series finale. I heard Supernatural Season 6 had similar issues.
In my opinion, Season 1 was Buffy's worst season. Though first seasons usually aren't that good, so I still give it a pass.

regarding Arrow, popularized the whole extended universe thing for modern TV. Hahaha, no, I'm sorry. You're going to have to go all the way back to some 90s shows for that, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003) & its spin off Angel (1999-2004. They had cross overs and continuing story arcs throughout their run and it was amazing.
Another example could be Xena Warrior Princess (1995-2001)& Hercules The Legenary Journeys (1995-1998, respectfully.
Just to name a few.

Season 4 of Buffy wasn't bad. It was the weakest season, maybe, but that's not saying much. It was still very good. And it's not quite as depressing as most of the other seasons are. I think people were just sad that Angel was gone, and they tried too soon to replace him with Riley, and yes there were a few duds like Beer Bad, but upon revisiting it I found it to be a lot better than I initially gave it credit for. Meanwhile Hush is pretty overrated.

I literally started watching Buffy in the 4th season. I watched one episode and wanted to see more. So personally, I don't get the Season 4 hate or the Riley hate. I ended up going back and watching the first 3 seasons on DVD boxsets (remember those) and I did think seasons 2 and 3 were the best, but I still like season 4. And no matter what anyone says, Riley was a babe and the best choice for Buffy.

I like season 4 of Buffy. I think season 7 was the worst- The Potentials were annoying. The Scoobies kicking Buffy out of her own house, especially considering theyd all be dead if it werent for her always saving them. Giles teaming up with Principal Wood to try and kill Spike, when Spike has helped the Scoobies a lot. Having Spike die in the end, luckily Angel season 5 brought him back.

I am a HUGE Friends fan, but I thought Season 4 wasnt that great. I mean there was some good stuff but not a ton. There was the drama between Ross and Rachel at the beginning. Then, we have Phoebes surrogacy to her half brother and sister in law. And finally Rosss wedding. There may have been a few things but mostly it wasnt that great.

All the later seasons of lost are horrible. I can't remember but when they started doing the alternate universes thing I gave up.
How I met your mother is atrocious. How do any of you find this laugh track show funny? Makes me sad for humanity. A laugh track show needs to go above and beyond to be funny and this shows weak.

Season 6 of Buffy is WAY worse than Season 4. It's too dark, Warren is a nightmare, and Buffy's relationship with Spike is disgusting. Don't get me wrong, I still liked it, and I can appreciate Joss Whedon wanting to make real life the Big Bad for that season, but for this Top 10 list, S6 belongs there instead of S4.

Game of Thrones Season 8 - the finale
How I Met Your Mother Season 9 - the finale
That 70s Show - wasnt bad. But was definitely a mediocre season in comparison. But the ending/final episode was satisfying, in my opinion.
Buffy Season 4
Friends Season 9 - was disappointing imo. Short.

season 7 of gilmore girls was so bad, it's not like other seasons, that season was a huge let down from fans. there only 2 televsion shows have bad endings, the other was quantum leap season 5, where he leaps into bad people, includes james earl ray and the evil leaper, what was nbc thinking
reply

The last season of Mad About You other than the finale was awful. I did like when the gang stole Fatso the the clown and the finale but the rest of the last season of That 70's show was a bitter dissapointment. 3rd Rock From the Sun' last season was pretty bad for the most part.
reply

I'd say Season 7 of Buffy was more disliked than Season 4. 4 had the worst episode of the series with Beer Bad, but it also had some of the best episodes. 7 was almost all duds, poor characterization, and added in several disliked characters that took up way too much screen time.

Its such a shame that game of thrones will go down in history as the worst show ending of all time when it was destined to be the greatest show of all time it literally had the momentum and suspense of being the LOTR of TV Shows but the jackass writers betrayed everyone
reply

Another show thats not on here, once upon a time that was ruined by season seven. It only brought back a few characters moved the characters to a new town screwed up the timeline of the show so much and so much more. The season six finale was the series finale in my mind
reply

I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Arrow, but my god, I hate Season 4 of these two shows, honestly Season 4 should be removed from these two shows permanently and the episode titled Hush from Buffy the Vampire Slayer should be put in Season 5 as the first episode.
reply

The himym ending. why why why did they have to butcher the storyline so bad. Everyone had accepted that ted and robin werent meant for each other. Why did they bring sentimentality into the show and completely forgetting that the characters had no chemistry
reply

Himym has great seasons but was ruined by one single episode. Even the penultimate episodes was ok. Things would have been great if Ted stayed with the mother, if mother never died and Barney/robbin stayed married or reconciled years after their divorce.
reply

West Wing Season 5 was a nightmare- terrible time to change show runners and watch Josh Malina try to establish Will Bailey. X-Files 9 is debatable, but definitely better than 10 and 11. Gilmore Girls 7 is still preferable to the dang reboot.
reply

I know I'm in the minority, but I loved the entire run of HIMYM and expected it to end similarly to the way it ended. Totally agree with Scrubs, That 70's Show and Lost, though. Didn't really watch the others.
reply

Sherlock Season 4 should be on here. The warning signs were there in season 3 but it was still entertaining. Season 4 (and The Abominable Bride) went completely off the rails! It just got silly.

. Question in the Watch Mojo list Top 10 Bad Seasons From Good TV shows Arrow Season 3 is listed, yet here You say Season 4 is the only bad one (which I agree with) What's up with that lol
reply

I feel bad for Allison Janney being in two shows with bad seasons, seeing as she's such an excellent actress, but at least The West Wing only had one bad season, it a great series.
reply

Really? I loved Lost season 6. I liked it because I paid attention to details. That showed changed the way stories are told and future TV shows started copying Lost story format.
reply

Don't agree about Buffy at all. It had two bad seasons, 4 and 6. Don't think season 6 of Arrow was particularly great either especially after how awesome season 5 was.
reply

Season 9 of how I met your mother was actually pretty good but just had a different setting. It was just the final 2 episodes that was pure trash and ruined everything.
reply

I love HIMYM but the ending Yeah sucks. The worst part wasn't Tracy's death, it was getting back toghether Robin and Ted. Barney also was treated like a shit
reply

season 4 of Buffy the vampire slayer made me so sad! I thought Angel was such an interesting character that deserved way more development and screen time! RIP Angel
reply

No matter how pissed I was at HIMYM ending
Nothing outrages me at the effort I kept into watching X-files
I really hate that show due to the ending

reply
