We'd be lying if we said Pinocchio (2022) didn't make some changes. For this list, well be looking at changes that Robert Zemeckis live-action adaptation of Pinocchio made from the animated classic. Our countdown includes Geppetto meets Jiminy, Monstro is a sea monster, Geppettos tragic backstory, and more! What do YOU think of the Pinocchio remake?
Date: 2023-11-21

For me these were the main differences:
1. The Blue Fairy is now black and not blond.
2. Theres no talking seagull in the original version.
3. Pinocchio gets kicked out of school because hes a puppet and Jimmy Cricket gets trapped temporarily inside a jar.
4. Pinocchio almost burns the stage from dancing too fast and has the fire splashed out.
5. We meet a new character working for the puppet master who is a former ballet dancer with a marionette puppet that looks just like her and she becomes Pinocchios friend.
6. Pinocchio is freed from the bird cage by Jimmy Cricket instead of the fairy and lies so his conscience can reach the key on the far wall. Also his nose never becomes a tree branch with a birds nest.
7. The fox and the cat were supposed to take Pinocchio to the coachman but they dont in this version. The coachman finds him first.
8. The coachman looks younger and dresses differently.
9. No girls were allowed on Pleasure Island in the animated version, but this one had both.
10. The coachmans henchmen are made of mist.
11. Pinocchios reunion with Geppeto is different.
12. The whale looks different.
13. Pinocchio revives his father but never becomes a real boy at the end. Too bad!

This was just a bad remake that exemplifies everything wrong with the disney remakes. It's a shame cause there were a few changes that could have worked.
1) Geppetto's backstory is defiantly an addition that is welcome. Just wish Tom Hanks was more invested.
2) While I didn't care for the seagull. The female puppeteer could have been an interesting addition. They just didn't do anything interesting with her. Since they cut most of the blue fairy's scene, why not have her rescue Pinocchio? You know instead of teaching the lesson that lying is ok if it gets you out of a bad situation.
3) The coachman's magic. While not essential, the coachman's dark magic is defiantly something that creates intrigue for the character.
The other thing I would change is how the writers changed the theme. They made Pinocchio a victim of circumstance rather than a child who made bad decisions, learned from them and gained his humanity through his journey. Having Pinocchio be kicked out of school for no reason made his decision to become a star a reasonable decision (as a school drop out) rather than a poor decision he made after being manipulated by a smooth con-artist. They really botched the message.

Honestly I have just seen both now. Yes all these changes are true, but none of them are fully fleshed out. All of the new elements that were discussed were primarily off screen. And a lot of the new one felt like filler. There was really no coherent plot like the old one had with an extremely unsatisfying conclusion. The new one had more time and felt far less fleshed out than the new one. Honest John and Gideon only appear once (where in the old one have two scenes that make a lot more sense to the plot, with Sofia the seagull and Fabiana bringing absolutely nothing to the story. The coachman is rushed in with no reason except by happenstance. So watching this video I feel does show the elements but I don't think exactly contextually to the film as a whole. Gepetto screen time in the new one felt about the same as the old one. Except far less fulfilling. To tackle the story they showed with him they needed to do the Kevin Kline treatment with Belles father. They didn't do it. So the new Pinochio pretty much everything feels shallow and undeserved.

After 82 years Monstro the ugly nightmare whale evolve into Monstro the sea monster. That's my favorite difference between the 2 versions because the sea monster is just beautiful and he's the worthy succesor of Chtulhu in the disney universe and thanks for the new monstro i overpass my fear of the previous form of Monstro. And we can see the personnality from this one: Nefarious and very sadistic because he laugh when he hunt down Pinocchio and Gepetto.
For me the bashing against this new version is unfair, yeah for purist it's an insult but for fans able to accept change this version have a lot of good things and it's for me the most important.

IMO the remake is 100% TRASH! I hate it with ever fiber of my being. to the blue fairy singing the main song that Jiminy is supposed to sing to Pinocchio not (officially) turning into a real boy at the end! You wouldnt even KNOW he transformed unless you were told about it or paid very close attention during the last 5 mins of the movie! Where as in the 40s classic his turning is celebrated. I HATE the 2022 remake and nothing not even Tom Hanks can save it. You wanna know something even worse? And im sorry if this is a spoiler but When Pinocchio is heading to school he stops to play with some horse manure. for a LONG TIME! NOT NEEDED! And gross!

It's sad this movie didn't live up to the potential of the 1940's film. At least the original sent the message to teach kids right from wrong even if it had controversial scenes according to modern standards like smoking and drinking. Even the most triggering. the jackass quote being censored by the bray of a donkey.

If I was Geppettos brother and Pinocchios uncle, I would escort Pinocchio to school and when does school teacher kick him out and say School is for real children puppet like you belong in the puppet show and then I would say Hey buddy! Thats my brothers special little boy youre talking about here!

If Pinocchio doesn't turn into a real boy, does that mean Jiminy Cricket has to stay as his conscious forever? I know in the last minute Pinocchio appears to turn real so maybe he gets his own conscious, but im just wondering because crickets dont live as long as living unkillable puppets.
reply

I like that they went cryptic with the ending, but with the blue glow and the limbs of Pinocchio turning into real human flesh at the very end, you can definitely still get the solid answer if you rewatch it. Even his profile changes slightly and his hair looks more natural

Literally LOVED it Ive seen it twice so far and cried like a literally baby both times. the animated version was my childhood jam and now as a 30 yr old woman I understand why it was my favourite then. I LOVED it the cuz the lessons also makes sense now
reply

Um, I think were missing a big one. Jiminy Cricket doesnt get his consciouses award at the ending. In the animated movie, at the ending he did, rewarded by the blue fairy but in this version he didnt
reply

I admit that the remake is enjoyable in its own right, but its just no match for the originals wonderfully animated and thematic glory. The original is as important to watch now as it was in 1940.
reply

I enjoyed this movie. The only thing I'm disappointed with is the ending because Pinocchio didn't turn into a real boy and the donkeys didn't turn back as kids. But I enjoyed everything else
reply

Blue fairy
Almost there part in the singing
Is similar to tangled love music
Then if you listen closely to the background music tone that's the exact Disney opening soundtrack

reply

Figures that they would change some stuff around. But the only jarring thing to me so far is Jiminy Cricket's redesign, it looks like a mask around his eyes compared to the original.
reply

Tom Hanks was a disappointment. The donkey transformation lost the horror aspect. The original version was frightening; the new one has no fright aspect to it. The changes sucked.
reply

In spite of the bad reviews I feel like this has the potential to become a Cult Classic family film similar to the live action remake of 101 Dalmatians from 1996 or Casper from 1995.
reply

Pinocchio Is sooooo cute in both but he is especially cute in the live action remake I dont understand why but he is just sweet and more relatable because he is trying his best
reply

So bottom line, they changed Pinocchio from being normal and flawed, to him being dull and bland. That was the point of Pleasure Island. Consequences for your actions.
reply

The original is my favorite Disney film, and to see the new one made me only appreciate the original more. The new one is abysmal to the original.
reply

Well I can't say much about the blue fairy's appearance between 1940 vs 2022, it's best not to be rude even though I didn't agree to it.
reply

Yoooo. Stromboli probably messed up that girls leg since she wouldn't be his puppeteer if she goes off and become a real ballarina.
reply

Number 1 difference with the original 1940 version, the 2022 is pure dogshit.
The 2022 version should be wiped from existence.

reply

Pinocchio DOES become a real boy - you see him transform as he walks off - you have to look closely but you see human legs, arms, etc.
reply

I didn't care for the new one for they changed the ending where he stayed wood not a real boy they shouldn't have messed with a classic
reply

Let's just say if it was a copy to the original it wouldn't have been fun cuz it wouldn't have anything new, I'm glad this happened
reply

The one thing that bugs me about most remakes and reboots is for every step forwards they always take a bunch of steps backwards
reply

i have a theory that 2022 pinocchio's ending is about gepeto's journey to the afterlife, i mean look at that glowing blue light
reply

Of course he turns into a real boy, just look at how his legs transform at the very end, his wooden hinges fade into real legs.
reply

at first u hated the motor scene then I remembered Pinocchio is Forrest Gump's son. so the speed would be second nature to him
