The 2000s truly were a great decade for musicals and the shows on our list are the best of the decade! For this list, well be looking at the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful musicals that premiered on Broadway between 2000 and 2009. The musical must be an original, so revivals will not be included, but Legally Blonde, Mamma Mia, Hairspray and more, will be! Join MsMojo as we count down the Greatest Musicals of the 2000s!

Wicked is so amazing! It's my favorite Broadway show, I'm on a phone with a Wicked phone case and home screen. My dream role is Elphie, and I did a duet with one of my best friends in For Good. I haven't really gone deep into Broadway yet, I was in the mindset that I wouldnt listen to the soundtrack until I saw the show so I didn't listen to many, but then I realized I can't afford that so I've started listening to new musicals. They're all amazing, but Wicked still has a special place in my heart for being probably the most memorable day of my life

I will always be convinced that the composers of Frozen were thinking of Defying Gravity when they wrote Let It Go. They even admitted they had Idina Menzel in mind when they were working on it.
Im through accepting limits, cause someone said theyre so. Some things I cannot change, but till I try I never know!
Its time to see what I can do, to test the limits and break through!
Both are among my favorite songs of all time.

For me Next to Normal is clearly number 1. It was a 6 person cast with low-key sets singing about depression and relatable family issues. Nothing about says successful musical, and yet it won a Pulitzer Prize! I love the music and the content moves me every time. Obviously, it did not have the commercial success that the ones above it had which was weighed into this ranking, but personally, Next to Normal is top 3 all time for me

IN THE HEIGHTS WAS R O B B E D
ONLY NUMBER NINE ARE YOU KIDDING ME
IN THE HEIGHTS IS THE BEST MUSICAL OF THE 2000S AND YOU CANT CHANGE MY MIND
Ok so I kept watching just because I wanted to see what couldve possibly been rated higher than ITH and you seriously think Jersey Boys is better than it oh my god

The 2000s? And you're choosing the best musical out of barely two decades--and, keep in mind we're in our second year of a Plandemic with no theatrical performances? There are 80 more years of the 21st century--and you have NO idea what masterpieces will be produced in those years!

I don't think it's fair to put totally original musicals against shows that are created from already existing music (Jersey Boys, Mama Mia. It's not hard to create a musical when all the music has already been written by someone else.

I don't care if your 18, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 100.
You just gotta love
Frankie Valli.
His voice is amazing.
I just can't imagine anyone hearing
My Eyes Adore You
For the first time and not being amazed.

Am I the only one who finds it strange that line stars in every musical he write? Like he was Alexander Hamilton and the lead in in the heights too? I also dont think hes that good of a singer: /
reply

My theater group did Legally Blond and Mamma Mia. I just cant get there songs out of my head. Like Blood in the Water or Waterloo. Also my senior year at my Choir sang For Good at my graduation.
reply

I agree with a lot of these, but The Color Purple not even getting a spot on the top 10 list? That's insane, especially when you've put the disaster that was the Mamma Mia stage musical above it.
reply

nobody gonna talk about how she said 2007 Hairspray movie starring: John T, Christopher W, and Zac Efron like the real star isn't Nikki Blonsky? the voice on that girl is incredible
reply

Thoroughly Modern Millie, 6 Tonys out of 11 nominations, launched the biggest star of the decade, arguably one of the greatest of a generation, not even an honorable mention.
reply

Hmmm talks about in the Heights and focus' on Lin Manuel Miranda performance in the early days of the production but does not comment that he wrote the music for the musical?
reply

A friend and I happened to see Monty Python onstage in NY. It was fabulous! The entire original cast was there, because they were filming it.

I've done pit orchestra for a small theater production of Light in the Piazza. What a gorgeous show. Made me cry every night of the run.

Edit: I liked my own comment because Im that desperate

reply

I don't know if I'm more offended that Spring Awakening wasn't number one, or that she pronounced Wendla wrong.
reply

I freakin love Beth Leavel. Shes a Broadway goddess and Im so happy mamma Mia was on the list. Its usually not.
reply

Okay but, Light in the Piazza deserves an actual spot on this list. The story/score are so beautiful.
