Well be looking at some of the most shocking, touching and significant moments from James Camerons Titanic, and seeing which ones hold up as fact, and which ones are fiction! FYI, there is no Caledon Hockley! MsMojo ranks the things Titanic got factually right and wrong. Did you think Titanic was 100% accurate when you first saw it?

Historically inspired movies don't lie. They are fictionalized adaptations of real events. They aren't meant to be factual documentaries. They're intended to use common narrative techniques like framing, point of view, drama, conflict, etc. to tell compelling stories _set within_ real historical events. They are, like all fiction, stories. Not news reports or documentaries. They do not purport to be factual depictions of reality in their entirety. If they did, _then_ they'd be lying.
Anyone going to see a movie should do so understanding that any film, even something like a biopic, is going to be heavily fictionalized and reframed in certain ways for the sake of storytelling. That doesn't mean they're lying. They're using storytelling to symbolically, thematically, narratively, and/or metaphorically, evoke emotionally resonant concepts _related to_ or _emerging from_ the true events.
A film like Titanic grounds us in the reality of the ship and the tragedy those onboard suffered, by investing us in a romance between two people who never existed, but easily could have. Details of certain events, certain physical realities, the orders of events, the behaviors of the crew, etc. are changed in order to explore certain points that are pertinent to reality, but didn't happen in reality. For example, the idea of hubris, the notion of wealth inequality, etc.
Other inaccuracies are, as this video acknowledges, for convenience's sake, because they aren't relevant to the concept being communicated. The flashlights for example. It would've required a much more complicated and differently paced sequence to be shot to maintain historical accuracy here. When the central concept being communicated - ships searching for survivors - could still be articulated on screen much more simply by including flashlights. Whether they have flashlights or not _isn't the point_ of the scene. And that emphasizing the point reasoning is a lot of what goes into filmmaking and storytelling.
Stories are not lies. They are stories. If you want absolute factual truth, do historical research. Don't look for it the movie theater. The only time a film is lying to you, is when it's intentional propaganda.

Murdoch was actually not a hero, he actually sank the ship. While some say the iceberg sank the ship, the truth is Murdoch did. How you may ask, well he gave it order for hard to starboard while also giving the order for full astern thus slowing the ships ability to turn away from the iceberg he caused the collision, which led to the deaths of 1500 people.
Also, there were enough lifeboats on the ship for every single passenger that was embarked. And there was also enough room in the boats to accommodate about 100 crewmembers as well. This is because the ship was not full to capacity at the time of sailing. This was a tragedy that did not need to occur. Had they just used calmness and common sense while loading the boats.

The story about the Californian isnt 100% true. The tried to warn the Titanic earlier because of the icebergs in the area but the titanic told them to shut up so they breaked up the connection. The captain of the Californian told his radio operator to go to sleep because he thought they already knew about the icebergs. When the titanic fired those rockets (white rockets arent a sign of danger like red flares) the captian of the Californian thought they were just fine so it wasnt his fault he didnt got there to help them.

I know a sad fact: there was a woman who went on a life boat but when she realized she couldn't take her two dogs with her (i think they were golden retrievers but i might be wrong) she got out and stayed with them and people said they saw her boby flouting still holding onto her dogs, I've always really like the Titanic since i found out about it i remember when i was like 8 i watched a 3 almost 4 hour video about it talking about why it sank, getting it back up and other things love it

In the movie as the Titanic sank And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda There was no Band Playing as the ship sank, you American fool, indeed. Dude - the ship is nicknamed the Millionaires Special, have a good look at the photograph's of the lifeboats. In one lifeboat there's only 25 passengers. And in other lifeboats there's even less. In other words the rich people ignored the poor. I'm so about common sense it hurts you're brain. I understand. Americans ain't use to people with brains.

#4, there were not enough lifeboats. False, actually. Just like we saw in the movie, the last two lifeboats didn't even have enough time to properly launch. 3/4 of the people in the second to last lifeboat died during the launch. There wasn't enough time to launch any more boats. If Titanic had more lifeboats, they would've gone down with the ship and not saved anybody

There was a 3rd ship that responded to the distress signals, titanic older sister, the Olympic. It didn't arrive because it was so far away that by the time it did arrive, it would be the next day. So, the crew of the Olympic decided they wouldn't make it in time and turned around. The Olympic would carry on with it's life until it was sadly scrapped in 1936.

The facts are correct, but there would have been no story if there had not been the fictional characters with Jack and Rose. How else would they have made this into a movie without the drama of fictional characters? The ship hits an iceberg and sinks. That would not have made a very exciting dramatic movie. I don't understand your point in this video!

The most famous survivor eva I believe, said she literally saw the Californian while on the lifeboat. Like she literally saw another ship. She said it was not in the distance. It wasnt just the lights, she literally saw a ship even though it was dark out. And apparently the people on the Californian said they didnt think fireworks meant help.

Ah the 1900s, what a time to live. Deadly ship accidents, airplane accidents, world wars, diseases. Cant believe were all related to people at that time. But I guess in order to build a safe world like ours now, we needed to learn from mistakes. We are lucky to be living in this century. People sacrificed themselves to make a safer world.

One thing Id like to point out is that the Titanic didnt reach that 45 degree angle when sinking. Its been said that she would likely have reached a 25 degree angle at most before breaking in half. Marine engineers have stated that it would have been physically impossible for the ship to reach that kind of angle before breaking.

ya im not sure about the last one. i dont think that can be classified as true or false, as nobody knows. why were more 1st class men saved than 3rd class children? and why were no 3rd class passengers called to testify at the inquiry? im tempted to say that was true, but i dont think it can ever be known for sure

I could not care less what went wrong in the story of the picture. I liked it, enjoyed it, and it entertained me and that is what matters. If I want to know facts, I do not look for them in a movie but in a documentary of by reading documents made after the disaster. Regards.

I'm a Titanic specialist, and the fact that many 3rd and 2nd class members were restricted from entering the deck is factual. The officers were ordered to lock the gates to prevent chaos. Please let me know what your source for that particular fact. The rest is accurate.

Actually researchers have found that the Titanic stayed together much longer than once thought. As the debris field is considerably compact, given the distance to the bottom. If it broke apart at the surface, the two pieces would be likely much farther apart.

Lies the lady who is the real Rose said she meet a man named Jack dauson and she said that there was no record of him he was the man who loved her also finding the photo that he drew her photo and was sold of at auction for hundreds of thousands of dollars
reply

You got one thing wrong at the very end. According to the trial held weeks after the Titanics sinking. It was proven in court that the gates were used to supress the surge of 3rd class passenger desperately going to the deck to board the life boats.
reply

Actaully you were wrong: the rms californian didnt help the titanic because they didnt want to its because earlier before the sinking, they offered to help if anything goes wrong but titanics operator angrly replied shut up, im busy
reply

In fact there were not enough life boats (true)
But they only didn't put more lifeboats because they thought it would make the deck crowded they were more focused on how its looks rather then how many people would survive!

reply

I always cry on the part when the boat goes back and low says we waited too long after seeing the dead baby i sit there in think of all. All of those innocent babies hearing them cry while in the cold
reply

Yes. The particular type of flashlight that was used in the film was around at that time, but flashlights were able to be used because a type of flashlight could have been used at that particular time
reply

Fun fact, theres considerable collaborative evidence to say Murdoch shot himself after shooting another man on deck. Its not like Cameron pulled the idea out of his ass
reply

Titanic actually did not break between the third and Fourth Funnel I broke before the third funnel and the area in which it broke in two is called tower 1 and tower 2.
reply

So there was no love story on the real titanic? What about that old lady that survived? Didnt she survive because of the man who loved her who is jack in the movie?
reply

Why are we forgetting Charles Joughin the chief Baker, who handed out bread and gave up his spot on the life boat to a woman and her child this man is the real hero
reply

If you seen the survivors video they said that they werent playing music as they went down. Only before hand and that if you were first class you couldnt get out
reply

#2 The elderly couple that went down with the ship, Isidor and Ida Straus, were co-owners of Macy's. Isidor co-owned it with his brother, Nathan.
reply

Your last statement in 100% wrong!
The list of Titanic victims by class shows that third class passengers were ABSOLUTELY discriminated against!

reply

Apparently 97% of first class women being saved on the lifeboats and only 47% of third class women being saved on lifeboats isnt discrimination.
reply

Despite not showing the ship break up, and a few very minor inaccuracies, 1958s A Night To Remember is a more accurate depiction of the event.
