Other than a couple (#3 and #2). Swing and a MAJOR MISS. It's My Party (the relationship between Eric Roberts & Gregory Harrison told in the first 5 minutes, including Eric Roberts' character finding out he's HIV positive - Gregory Harrison's character says he'll never leave -which he eventually does - Eric's character finding out he has PML & decides to kill himself instead of suffering anyone in pain) & What Dreams May Come (where in the first few minutes the kids are killed in a car crash - leading to the father getting killed in yet another car crash). I think you guys need to re-think what makes people cry.

X-Men First Class also has a sad opening scene, and one that is beyond depressing. Magneto in the camps as a kid, struggling to reach out to his mother, beaten up by the Nazis, put to the test by the evil Sebastian Shaw, and the shooting of his own dear human mother, thus the beginning of a dark path that is only further cemented by the Cuban Missile Crisis, the loss of one of their young recruits, the paralysis of his only friend(plus his first love, if you're a Cherik fan, and the desire to protect his fellow mutants for our favorite broken metal-bending, shark-grinned, bipolar villain.

Anything with cancer is an instant emotional trigger because my mom died of pancreatic cancer. so that opening scene from Guardians of the Galaxy would punch me in the gut for sure. because I have been there.
The Color Purple looks super devastating. I do really want to see that film though, as Ive heard great things about it.

A Time to Kill is the WORST opening for those of us empaths. Hearing little Tonya cry out for her Momma while being raped and then hung up to die makes my soul ache. That one is the most graphic depiction of something that actually happens more often than we'd like to admit, which makes it all the more gut-wrenching.

God, I'm not ashamed to admit that Marriage Story's opening DID make me bawl, as Charlie and Nicole's loving opening monologues will almost make you forget that you're watching a film about a declining marriage, before you're abruptly taken out of it seconds later.

Out of all these I have only watched Guardians of the Galaxy (and the Vow, but not the opening scene. That beginning scarred me, but I was unwilling to cry so that my friends wouldn't laugh at me. Fortunately the rest of the film was easier to go through.

Another movie that made me cry was 1999/2000 movie called 'Waitress'. It had me in tears becaise this woman was trying to find her way out from a no good husband of hers by baking pies and saving her money to leave her husband.

Private Ryan should have been #1. I defy anyone to make it through the first 20 minutes without crying. I had to leave the theater I was so upset.
Believe me, Guardians of the Galaxy didnt have that effect.

reply

The opening of 'Saving Private Ryan' was genius because we're led to believe the veteran was John Miller. It hits harder at the ending when it's revealed that the veteran was actually Pvt. Ryan all along.

I can relate to the guardians of the galaxy one so well from when my father died in 2005. The second that scene came on it was like I was taken back in a time machine to that day

reply

'Guardians of the Galaxy' had the best opening (including his epic lip sync) in the MCU. It served as character development and perfectly captures the film's themes and tone.

THANK YOU for putting The Color Purple at #1. that whole movie is a sob-fest (the end still gets me, but I started to tear up at the mere mention of Celie's tragic beginnings.
