People are like 'Oh well it worked for a Black Cinderella so it should work for a Black Snow White and Black Tinkerbell'. As much as we don't want to admit it, it is not necessarily about the race. It is about how they portrayed the story. This and The Wiz are the only 'race swapping' movie that actually had a huge story arc that worked. Now, if the Little Mermaid can do that well, then this can also be just as iconic. Oh and can we also remember that majority of the cast had a theatrical background which is also why it actually worked? In general, we need to encouraged new characters for the new generations to enjoy. We have that potential but if we can actually do something like this again, it needs to have an actual good story.

I think this was a much better adaptation than the classic 1950 animated film. With the music, although Bibbity Bobbity Boo and A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes are classics, this is Rodgers and Hammerstein. With the story, we actually get to know the prince. He's not some mystery that we don't see until the ball. We get a lot more character introduction and development. The 1950 film has a lot of emphasis on the cat and mouse chases. Acting-wise, it's about even. Bernadette Peters has a more comical approach as the stepmother, while Eleanor Audley is more vicious and menacing. Ilene Woods and Brandy both do a fabulous job as Cinderella. Verna Felton and Whitney Houston are both great as the fairy godmother.

Proof that diversity wasnt invented in the 2010s. I absolutely LOVED this movie when I was younger and I absolutely adored Brandy as Cinderella. I never ONCE thought about her being a black woman. It was just a GREAT movie. (If this were made in current year, the media would relentlessly push the diversity angle, and internet media sources would call anyone who didnt like it racist. Because thats current year for ya. PROGRESS)

I noticed the multiracial cast when I was little and I loved it then as much I love it now. And I loved brandy and her singing and shes so pretty and this is the Cinderella film with best fairy godmother ever. (And no one can convince me otherwise) I had a crush on the prince and whoopi had me laughing all the time. I always remembered the king as the guy from the big boat movie when I was younger lol.

The MoMusu production of R&H's Cinderella is one of my faves (weird step-sister song placement not withstanding) but I will always always ALWAYS have a soft spot in my heart for this version. I watched it air live for the first time when it came out when I was a kid and it was just so magical! Though I still joked about how in the 90s everyone kept trying to make Whoopie Goldberg sing. XD

That $12M they originally budgeted obviously includes actor wages. Do you honestly believe Whitney Houston would be in it and singing in it if they weren't paying her big money? There were so many big stars in that film from the time. Given the scale of the sets, costume and cast, this was one of modern Disney's cheapest movies to make.

It was ground breaking. I remember it gave ABC the largest Sunday Night in terms of viewership in years. It meant so much to kids especially to see someone who looked like them. Children are not gonna care that the Queen is Black and the King is White with an Asian son. it's us who have been tainted, lol

The great Whitney Houston said on CNN that she grew up wanting to be Julie Andrews. the wonderful Julie who was the original Cinderella. A few years later Whitney became executive producer to The Princess Diaries and finally worked with Julie! Thats fantastic.

What on earth do u mean by brandy being the first black Cinderella? Or what was the point of mentioning the 1970 cinderella in the video at all then? And then of course we knew Whoopi can sing bc we saw her do that in the movies ghost and sister act one and two.

Brandy role has helped execs and others make the argument against others today for actresses such as Halle to play Ariel by being able to reference it as being done before and loved and a classic when done tastefully and respectfully

I know that both this movie and Hamilton are classics, but I also think they are entirely different from one another, besides the fact that neither had Alan Menken, Marc Shaiman or the Sherman Brothers write the music!

This was my favorite Cinderella growing up. When it finally came on Disney+ I felt like a little kid again, twirling around in her living room while the fairy godmother gave her opening speech

I loved a meme that said simply And they ain't explain $#! + when looking at the diverse cast. It was the best!
I can't see a version of Cinderella without comparing it to this masterpiece!

I LOVED this movie as a kid, and I bought it for my movie collection in my adult years. Just shows that racism is taught and not innate in a childs mind. I was a white kid pretending to be Brandi.

Did you know that three of the songs you weren't in the original Rogers and Hammerstein Cinderella? (Cinderella and the Prince's first duet, the stepmother's song, and one other, I forgot)

Whos watching this in 2023 when theyre about to release part two after 25 years I cant wait to see whos going to replace Whitney Houston even though its hard to replace her
reply

On another note on the massive budget, one of the sets, most likely Cinderella's stepmother's house, was one of the same soundstages that were used for _The Wizard of Oz. _

It takes real Broadway Royalty like Bernadette Peters to have to guts & nerves of steal do her job without fear. Race doesnt matter in theater.

I loved this version. but in the 2021, this film would cause so much controversy - sadly. Due to it's ethnic references and casting.
