some of the songs are not just difficult to sing but even more to portray them thru your voice so you can pass the emotions of the songs, for some songs you dont realy need to but for songs like memory, gethsemane its almost more important then hitting the notes, for memory the entire show builds up to this song this is the emotional climax of the show and if you dont deliver it correctly the entire emotions of the song and show are gone, with gethsemane one of the major points of the show is showing how difficult what jessus mission is and how much it seems like he has no reason to do it but does it anyway thats the emotional climax of the show if you dont deliver the second part of this song the song is worthless emotionally, BTW the other major point of the show is showing judas in a very different light.

There will never be another Madeline Kahn. such perfection in comedic acting and singing.
Phantom was absolutely stunning at Her Majesty's Theater London, my friend had seen it so got us center orchestra seats. He awaited my expressions, when the chandelier flew off the stage to the celiing and savored my reaction when it fell from the ceiling and to the stage with the curtains closing for the intermission. I could feel the adrenaline shot both times, as I almost had a heart attack, to his delight! lol It was life affectingly brilliant!

Read this story once in The Sondheim Review. John McMartin was going to appear in a revival of A Little Night Music, and he called up Len Cariou, from the original cast, to ask him about a particular song he was having trouble mastering, and Cariou immediately said Now. Sure enough, that was the song.
I also remember listening to a recording of a Barbara Cook concert from the 80's, I think, and her reaction to a fan shouting out for her to sing Glitter and Be Gay was Mama don't do that no more.

JC Superstar - the (original) Broadway version was amazing - But Ian Gillan hit it out of the park on the album version. I sang this role in school, was my absolute favorite ever! Neeley was such a disappointment in the movie version, I couldn't stand to watch it more than once. he showed the emotional range of a cucumber while playing one of the most dramatic scenes/roles in human history! Sorry, mate, that was a swing and a miss.

dawg i literally just auditioned with Glitter and Be Gay because that's THE ONLY MUSICAL SHEET MUSIC I HAD. needless to say the judges (i think? never done community theater before, im a freshman in college) said I should keep singing because I 'have a gift'. wasn't good enough for even the ensemble of BIG FISH. I'm so embarrassed I don't know if I want to do theater anymore

You seem to feature more modern musicals which is fine, however I am more familiar with older musicals so I when I was trying to figure out the songs I expected to find on the list my first thought was Defying Gravity but the next one was The Impossible Dream from Man of La Mancha. I have always considered it difficult. Are you familiar with it? Do you agree with me?

Pretty Little Picture from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Performed it several times. It was a tough song and many productions cut the song because of its difficulty. We didn't. Opening night I got tongue-tied after the first 4 lines and yelled to the conductor One more time from the top I thought she was going to kill me but they did and we nailed it.

Flowers from Hadestown deserves to be on this list. It's easy to overlook, but try and sing it without going flat or sharp! The key is also not one that you often hear, so the runs can be hard to learn. Seriously, try to actually sing the song and tell me it isn't harder than some of the songs on this list!

Yall havent seen then ballad of jane doe! Its an extremely high song with wicked whistle notes! Not to mention usually you perform half the songs while flying in mid air and spinning in circles! (And I dont mean twirling I mean spinning from head to toe)

I always found Memory the hardest song to sing. and I did it at 16 years old (1985. Phantom is EASY compared to that, and Wicked wasn't even written back then. (I'm a high soprano) I'm also surprised that nothing from Fiddler was included in this list.

I desperately want to see Kristin Chenoweth's full performance of And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going from the Broadway benefit show Miscast. I saw the opening years ago, and by the fourth word, everyone in the room was cracking up.

Personally, I feel like some of the actors are starting to sound more and more alike. But this gal who is playing Evita in the video, Solea Pfeiffer, she has a strong voice. It's refreshing to see and hear. We need more like her.

My dads jaw dropped when we saw Dirty Dancing the Musical. Ill never forget the look on my dads face. My moms jaw dropped when we saw HedWig and The Angry Inch. She was in major shock how high Lena Hall can sing a high note

Fantastic that #Chess got here by itself and not even a song I was remembering- superbly underrated show and I was surprised to see it. John Barrowman has a wonderful version of 'I know him so well' but this list is fireee

I think Santa Fe from newsies should be on here. Its super emotional, and has an accent that makes some vowels in the song really hard to sing, not to mention its just a high tenor song and impressive either way

On my list, nothing beats Defying Gravity, And Im Telling You Im Not Going, Confrontation, With You, Burn, Pulled, The Music of The Night, When You Believe, On My Own, Popular, When Theres No One, and Gethsemane
reply

The best part of this video was where you barely got to hear the song itself. I get you have to give a little backstory but for f sake, can we hear any of the song(or notes) you're talking about.

Even in short bursts, I'm pleased, awed and amazed (and my cat, who is listening, is annoyed. I thought learning to sing Rich Mullin's Our God Is An Awesome God, was challenging. Wow.
reply

They left out Poor Wandering One from Pirates of Penzance. Listen to Linda Ronstadt just sail through her version of the song. There are other versions, of course, but none better.
reply

When I first watched this video, I knew right away that Confrontation would be on this list. Being one of my favorite broadway songs, I can tell its a HARD song to sing
reply

I would put With You from Ghost on this list. Not only its heartbreaking but it takes a lot of breath to go from slow to high, to show whats in your heart of emotions
reply

Have you ever tried to do a duet by yourself?
I like to sing The Phantom of the Opera in the shower and I don't want to bring anybody in there with me so. yes

reply

I just recently found out that Phantoms titular song (some parts of it, especially the scale part at the end, is being lip synced by the actress.
reply

The ballad of Jane Doe from ride the cyclone is also very hard to sing idk if its the hardest but I literally cant sing it so theres my addition
reply

Have you ever tried to do a duet by yourself?
Me, watching Kang Hyungho nail both parts of Phantom of the Opera completely by himself: uhh.

reply

Complex and demanding note-production does not equate to a song that's worth listening to. Most of the picks here are shite as ''songs''.
reply

Gethsemane is my favorite Broadway song & only Ted Neeley & Ian Gillan can do it justice. I've heard some really bad versions over the years
reply

Ha ha I have to sing your fault for my acting groups production of into the woods. Its intimidating but I have to do it.
reply

I'd highly suggest Queen of the Night, but from what I can find, it isn't Broadway, so I suppose it doesn't count.
reply

Bring him home is one of my favorite songs I will never get over the voices of those who have had the honor to sing it
