My pick for best ending of the film version of a musical would be On a Clear Day. I can well understand why it wouldn't appear of this list (not even as an honorable mention) because the reason it is my favorite has nothing to do with the film's final number--which is only so-so. Spoiler Alert: in the film version of On a Clear Day it is revealed that the end that the central couple will meet again (and be happily married) in a future life, which means they are now free to separately pursue their respective current lives totally apart form each other. This is a major change from the ending of the stage version, but I think this enormous change is allowable because here Alan Jay Lerner was adapting his own work in the stage version to the film version. Personally, I think this major improvement for the film version is the main reason that the stage version is now rarely produced.

So funny story. I went to Pitch Perfect in theaters on opening day and the theater was packed. Right when the Bellas started singing the sound in the whole theater cut out and didn't come back until Becca and Jesse were kissing. So I had to listen to in on the album. I didn't get to see and hear it at the same time until it was out of theaters.

One of my favorites that was not included is the final number in Burlesque. Christina Aguilera, as always, knocks it out of the park! The supporting cast including Juliann Hough is just incredible and the song Burlesque is fun and catchy. Love this film and all the music!

A little disappointed not to see The Greatest Show (reprise) from The Greatest Showman as at least an Honorable Mention. I love the circus choreography and how it ends poignantly with Barnum not at the circus, but with his family.

Aside from the brilliant dancing of Renee and Katherine, including almost everyone in the audience, there was one thing that put this over the top. When Renee says: We couldn't do this without you. That line was true and omninous.

As a huge fan of the original Broadway Musical In the heights, I hated the movie, they changed way too much stuff and especially the ending where the mural that makes him change his mind to stay was changed in the film.

Don't know if it's one of the best, but one of the most emotionally satisfying is the end to rent. To have Mimi come back from near death, to reunite with Roger, and reaffirming the power of love, is just so awesome.

The Nicholas Brothers performing this unrehearsed does check out. Gene Kelly did a number with them in The Pirate and he got frustrated with them due to lack of rehearsal but they performed that number flawlessly.

My pick for Best Movie Musical Ending would have to be Mary Poppins where the parents reunite with their kids by singing Let's Go Fly a Kite while Mary Poppins herself flies out in a bittersweet yet satisfying way.

Pitch perfect is not a movie musical whatsoever, yes it does have music however it is acapella which works into the story and its about acapella groups anyway, the movie is more of a comedy though

Good list, but could have been better. Just a note, one of my favourite musical finales is the one from Sweeney Todd. And in my opinion, the movie translated this finale beautifuly. So powerful.

Pitch perfect 3 gets me in the feels. Especially since Im about to be a senior next year and graduate out of my choir that did amazing things for my academic and social life

La La Land HAS the happy ending. Mia wanted to be successful actress, Seb wanted a true jazz club. They got what they wanted. It is not ideal, but it is one of the best possible.
reply

La La Lands ending is beautiful. Yes, it is sad that Mia and Sebastian had to go their separate ways in order to get what they wanted, but they still do care for each other.

My favorite movie musical ending is the live-action Beauty and the Beast. It's the perfect Disney ending: Everyone gets their happily-ever-after and it makes your heart soar.
reply

How the hell did you miss out OH WHAT A LOVELY WAR? Not to mention CABARET: Admittedly the MC's going away and the images in the mirror come after the music has stopped.
reply

The best ending of any musical is Singing in the Rain. Don making Cathy sing so Lena can lip sync, the curtain pull, and his singing You Are My Lucky Star is so good.

Finale B (Rent)
Louder Than Words (Tick, Tick. Boom)
You Can't Stop the Beat (Hairspray)
Finale (In the Heights)
Don't Stop Believin (Rock of Ages)

Id add I Dont Need Anything But You from Annie at least as an honorable mention. Not many better endings than Annie getting adopted by Daddy Warbucks.
reply

The Finale of In the heights movie is anticlimatic. It doesn't surprise. It cheats, and what should be soul lifting ends up being a deception.
reply

Number one yes I agree but every 1 of your honorable mentions and I mean everyone of your honorable mentions should have been in the mix

Nobody Moulin Rouge? Am I alone here? Pitch Perfect isn't even a musical. Can't say that it's better than the end of Moulin Rouge can we?
reply

My favorite musical ending is probably from Fame: the Graduation performance. It's SO uplifting and makes me want to sing & dance.
reply

Where was Mary Poppins? Or sound of music? Or Moulin Rouge? Dream girls? Phantom! For Les Mis to be an honourable mention only!
reply

What about Mamma Mia? Both films had amazing endings full of love and family and they want to make you get up and dance!
reply

Fun fact: my cousin Olivia Perez was that little girl who played the daughter of the main character in In the Heights.
reply

Grease came second. Love that. Rest In Peace Olivia. Thanks for bringing Sandy to life in this unforgettable musical.
