I'm Canadian and I was in grade 10 when 99 LuftBallons came out. My friends and I all loved the German version, learned all the words in German (my school offered German as a course option which I took for 4 years, and found the English version to be far too bubble-gum for the real message in the original song to come through. The German version will always be my favourite.

Heroes is always powerful, whether sung in English or German. I remember taking my 13 year old cousin to see JoJo Rabbit, and when she got up to leave when the credits began rolling with Helden playing over them, I stopped her, as nobody walks out on David Bowie, especially not a classic track.

99 Luft Ballons German version was a hit in USA before the English version came out. I prefer and know better the german one.
