It actually took Fanny 5 years, from the 13-year-old girl winning her first amateur night at Keeney's to her show-stopping debut in Ziegfeld's Follies of 1910, for her to reach stardom, not a decade as you mentioned. But you did a terrific job on this. Thank you! PS: I met Ray Stark and Bill Brice a number of times; Bill invited me to lunch on numerous occasions and related stories of his parents and his Uncle Lew, Fanny's brother. I was humbled that he confided in me and trusted me enough to tell me things that weren't necessarily flattering about his father.

Are you familiar with William Shakespeare? He wrote many historical plays about real life characters (Richard the III, Henry the IV, etc) These plays are considered among the greatest plays ever written, but they are far from accurate. He was not trying to be accurate, and these plays greatness has nothing to do with acuity or the lack thereof. His plays are art; so is this one. They use the shell of the story to make artistic statements. Judging what Funny Girl got right and wrong is just dumb.

No more realistic than the Sound of Music but it had a great score and a great star, neither of which has ever been topped. No one who plays Brice will EVER escape the Streisand shadow so it's almost futile to try. Maybe a non musical film would be a better vehicle for the real Brice story to be told. One was made in 1939 with Alice Faye and Tyrone Power called Rose of Washington Square (by the way)

Fany Brice character in Funny Girl resembles more Streisand than Brice. They built that musical around Barbra which was smart move since she was hot showbiz newcomer at the time and she single-handedly secured shows success.
Fany Brice deserves proper biopic with Chelsea Peretti playing her; )

Very interesting indeed. It would be terrific, since this video was all about FUNNY GIRL, if you could do the same with the sequel FUNNY LADY, much of which is focused on Fanny's marriage to Billy Rose. Honestly, the musical content of FUNNY LADY is even better than FUNNY GIRL.

I read many years ago, that the depiction of Fanny Brice in Funny Girl wasn't actually a true portrayal of Brice, but that of a 1918 Barbra Streisand. Nevertheless, what did come from the movie was another life-long fan of Barbra Streisand. She made the movie the hit that it was.

News flash. Alexander was not Puerto Rican and George Washington was not black and whet worked out. So what if Fanny is portrayed as overweight. The show is about a misfit. Whether they are fat, skinny or have a big nose.

If you really want to see who Fanny Brice was and why she is famous your really need to see some of the movies she was in such as: The Great Ziegfeld and Ziegfeld Follies.

If I recall from the movie, it was Nick who came home from prison and ended the marriage. Fanny was angry at him for ignoring Frances but he'd already decided to move on.

Pretty good list. I just watched another podcast the other day that dived even deeper in the real Fannie Brice. She lived quite the life & also had a radio career.

You commented that the Yiddish accent was just part of her act, which is exactly what it was in the show, too, so why do you say that is wrong?
reply

The part about Baby Snooks makes no sense, since that character has nothing to do with a snap decision she made in the Follies, true or not.

Fanny was dead but Nicky was alive and sat in the front row. Nicky threatened to sue them if he didn't like how he was portrayed

For a film that takes place in the 20s it looks mighty 60s to me, why Barbras eye makeup and towering wigs alone screamed 67-68!

The only thing more annoying in hello dolly than Bernies obnoxious laugh, was bette midlers hammy performance.
reply

Wait a minute! Although Brice was talented, Lucille Ball IS the premier Female comic talent in history!

It's really odd that even after they omitted so much stuff her son still didn't want to be mentioned.

FACT! FANNY BRICE! Was A Jewish Homely! Maybe even an Ugly Duckling. But NOT An OVERWEIGHT! Woman!
