She had the winner picked from the beginning of each season to check whatever box she wanted checked. After that, any model who performs better than the chosen one will get knocked out over some nebulous lack of personality or lack of commitment or some such nonsense. Basically, youve obviously got better pictures than the chosen one so were going to rip apart you as a person on TV!
Horrible.
Also Tyra obviously loved choosing challenges that would upset contestants for the drama. Then criticize them for not being willing to do everything. Like making the conservative girls do a nude shoot, the obviously traumatized girl kiss a male model, the girl who just lost a close friend so a shoot in a grave, etc.
Ill admit that I still enjoyed seeing the photos but I could usually guess the winner in the first couple of weeks and it was all so so obviously all about Tyra. She truly doesnt care about anyone but herself.

Sad part is that the high fashion industry is not too far from this, especially back in Tyra's day. What looks or seems ridiculous to us is not so in the industry. There was some exaggeration going on for TV ratings but you could tell that in Tyra's mind a lot of her decisions, judging and comments were justified as that was the status quo in the industry. I also believe she only made the show and put these young women through these situations because she was traumatized from her brief time in Europe as a high fashion model. She took it out on aspiring models. If anything this show exposed how toxic the fashion industry can be. Somehow, the reality is allegedly much worse.

So sick of people calling ANTM problematic, it was a reality show that all those contestants SIGNED UP FOR. And beyond season 6 you cant even say the majority of contestants wouldve been unaware of the type of show they were signing up for.
None of these lists containing problematic/shocking moments ever contain more than one or two truly shocking moments and moments of contestant neglect, the rest is just overly prissy nonsense.
Tyra wasnt a problematic host, the judges were fine, the photoshoots were fine.
And again Ill say, the contestants signed up for it!

The thing with Keenyah is actually pretty outrageous. You don't want girls with a 'questionable' past but would let another girl feel extremely uncomfortable because another male model can't understand boundaries? And the reactions? You basically told her that it's okay for people to use you and to suck it up as long as it helps your career. And dear Tyra, gtf out with your explanation of how to handle it. Yeah, make it fun, so he knows he has to stop Yeah sure as if that would have helped.
Can anyone explain that logic to me as if I was a child, please?

No such thing as homeless for a day. She had a home to go to, she ate before, had cameras obviously around her and didn't have to worry about being attacked, where her next meal was coming from, where she was going to sleep safely or have everything she owned taken, as well as plenty of other things they deal with. It's like the BS Salvation Army 'sleeping rough' for a night fundraising to line their own pockets more.

I know that professional models have worn shoes like that on the runway. I wonder if they had time to practice/train.
A lot of their runways are so wild that the clothes fade into the background. I don't understand the point of shows like that.
If you look at the photos of the other girls with the male model they seem to be a lot closer to the other guys than him, Keyna was the only one brave enough to call him out.

There was also that time when a contestant with vitiligo got called panda by a famous photographer or costume designer (I can't remember which it was, and when she approached him and told him how inappropriate it was for him to call her that, he, instead of apologizing, got defensive and said she was being ungrateful and should consider herself lucky to have earned an affectionate nickname from him.

Ugh. This show was so hard to watch. I was interested in the photo shoots, the artistic side, but as the seasons progressed it felt like the show was more interested in putting young, vulnerable women into dangerous situations or just to humiliate them. The expectations for the models to go along with whatever was asked was cruel and proved how abusive the fashion industry can be.
reply

Tyra be like oh sweetie I was doing a fashion show in NYC during 9/11, and people were dying, and buildings were burning, but I still had to work it and be fierceThe judges dont think you have the strength for modeling and its time to pack your bags, were sending you home. All of you will actually be packing your bags today because were sending you to JAPAN!
reply

I was a model from the time I was 16 to the time I was 23 and America's Next Top Model was considered by everyone in the fashion industry as a huge practical joke it was trashy and laughable as the photo shoots were completely unusable in the Real Fashion World I feel bad for these girls thinking that they were actually going to have supermodel careers
reply

we were rooting for you! tiffany didn't have to take it like that she could've just walked off my opinion also facing a phobia of something then brace it then get critizied for it hard but dealing with what shandi jael or kahlen went through cheating or death also very emotional but constant not so much constant of watching these not so much shocking
reply

People say the show is absurd or something that didn't age well. But do you honestly think this show would have much audience, if they played it safe or socially acceptable. They made us aware of Isis King (a trans fashion model, Winnie Harlow a model who has a rare skin condition, and many more women who has there career and life change by the show.
reply

Idk what it is about dissecting this show but every few months I find myself watching clips and it seems everyone else is doing it too. This show was really crazy and it went on for 23 seasons right. With so many episodes the discourse of this show will never end and I bet tyra doesnt care because shes getting BANK after traumatizing these girls
reply

A lot of news saying that Tyra is toxic person makes me unable to be interested with whatever she does. Is it the answer why Naomi hates her? Tyra knows how to place herself as a victim by saying Naomi doesn't want to share the same spot as a black model, but why Naomi's relationship with Veronica Webb is fine?
reply

Unhoused people? Really? As someone who's been homeless, I find it weird to say unhoused. Not everyone's home is a house so saying unhoused people is just weird af. There's nothing shameful about being homeless. Hopefully, it doesn't last very long but it just sounds condesending to say unhoused.
reply

We werent as weak and pathetic as we are now so it wasnt that bad then. Like seriously, some people are going through real sht. Being forced to cut your hair when you WANT to be a clothes horse or being forced to walk in heels is NOT problematic get over it
reply

definitely the most deplorable and creepy realyties on tv. all these girls subjected to humiliation under the damn criticism of a disgusting panel of judges full of garbage thanks to all their inner insecurities. disgusting people.
reply

Its funny cause if Kenya had gotten mad at him and angrily told him to back off, they would have reprimanded her again and Tyra would mention the stereotypes black women face, either way she WOUDLVE been screwed
reply

lol almost the whole video is basically just talking about cycle 4. It really was that bad. Even though I think most of especially the early cycles are so incredibly toxic and contemptuous
reply

Umm the in the urban glamour shoot they didnt have homeless people on the set lol. They were all amateur models. One of them even become a contestant late in another cycle lol
reply

Yes, it was a toxic and cruel show, but it was very entertaining and gave girls a lot of opportunities to become a mediaperson, so please stop demonizing it 15-20 years later.
reply

I would have liked to seen the entire panel, including Tyra Btch walk in those shoes those disgusting disingenuous judges whos lips are always planted firmly on Tyras arse!
reply

when has a tv reality show not been about entertaining the audience? Of course all the stunts are to entertain the viewer, is not about the well-being of the contestants
reply

Our youngest daughter just told me the other day that she never realised how problematic ANTM was at the time. In her defence she was ten or so. It horrifies her now.
reply

So, for cycle 16, ANTM hired already working models for that scene. They knew they werent going to be chosen and were hired just to freak the chosen girls out.
reply

I remember watching the cycle with Michelle and her impetigo. I felt so sorry for the poor girl. The rest of the girls acted like shrieking dramatic shrews.
reply

Everybody complains about Tyra but never Mr. Jay? Mr. Jay was such a dick sometimes to the girls at least Tyra owned up to some of her mistakes unlike jay
reply

11: 10 Im arachnophobic. Seeing this photo shoot just straight up pissed me off. Why would they do this to her? Thats LOW.
reply

How dare these idiots blame that model who was being harassed by the male model. These people are disgusting, especially Tyra
reply

What vile things to do to these desperate young women all in order fro that btch Tyra to get a laugh or boost the show.
