It's incredible just how much of this whole franchise, when watching as a kid, seemed like just nothing more than Robin Williams and Dan Castellaneta making random stuff up and that's why we laughed. Years later, it's interesting to go digging to find out what this or that reference really was, that is the ones that aren't double entendres and are actual references. The parade one is a notable one for me, as back when the movie was first released, audiences outside of the US and Canada would not have got that at all, even quite a few adults would have seen that as just a big dumb balloon, just as I did. Even watching this list I've only just noticed the winter breath of the commentators.
It was a steal! was so obvious. With his glance to the audience, Aladdin was doing a dad joke before the term had been coined.

Simple concept basic logic if life is not free why the hell would death be any cheaper it's not. So the question one may wonder is the spiritual cost to one's own soul and spirit for having lived and died to the lowest standards of quality for so many years now global pollution has diminished the quality of life to the point where today's people are living, dying and yielding the worst spiritual kickback that has ever been manifested since the beginning of life only getting worse. The polar opposite extreme to that is today's people should be living and dying to the highest standards of quality which would make each and every moment physically, mentally, financially and spiritually beneficial. The most advanced ancient royal elite super superior dominate civilized nations. Made sure all their loyal subjects were able to live and die to the highest standards of quality that were available during that time and they can do this without anyone overstepping their boundaries. Because the end result of such a lifestyle. Is constant consisting physical, mental, financial and spiritual progress occurring within each and every moment of life. That Level of care to oneself and others results in a truly positive force that is self perpetuating continuously. S. R. F.

I got most of them as a kid, having older parents and grandparents (like knowing Groucho Marx existed, and the horse with two rear ends always made me cackle. The brothel gals I thought were sisters he kept trying to flirt with and that was their angry mother with the broom. As for all the parodies, I knew what they were, just not who they were supposed to be, thanks to a ton of Looney Tunes & Warner Bros shows. And the Macy's Parade was super obvious to me, but my mom used to put it on every year, so there's that. lol
reply

10 is a slight stretch or at least open to interpretation; seeing as the brothel ladies don't recognize him as Prince Ali and as Aladdin the girls seem annoyed in a flirty way (as they were annoyed for him passing them up regularly perhaps. Also it never ceases to impress me that the voice of Homer Simpson does an uncanny Robin Williams impression of Genie. I never knew as a kid and only found out as an adult.
reply

Although you did notice the brothel ladies, your interpretation is way off. The girls are not being familiar with Aladdin because he's a regular. It's a form of disrespect towards him because he's notoriously poor. They're in for the money and he has none. Being familiar in those kinds of places was a form of disrespect. Plus, look at their behaviour, they clearly don't like him. Again, because he's poor.
reply

Okay, for the brothel scene, it should be noted that EVERYONE in that area knew him. and none of the girls seemed fond of him. which was in contrast to when he became a prince. so I doubt that he did anything with them. he's just infamous for being a thief and poor.
Also, the innocent bystanders being hurt was just comedy and shouldn't be taken too seriously.

. if you think the peddler concocted the story of Aladdin to sell the lamp you aren't paying nearly enough attention to his voice. He's the Genie doing an accent, and the Genie is the one that breaks the 4th wall a lot. Infomercial style as you pointed out, and not to mention I don't think fries were common in the era Aladdin is set in.
reply

As a aspiring writer, I can say setting up jokes for children and adults is very, very hard. Sure they had Williams, a master at making kids laugh while making their parents shake their heads and smile. But this double joke theme runs through all modern kid movies. When it's well done, it is so well done.
reply

Am I the only one who didn't miss the jokes and references as a kid? The chess move is the only item on this list I didn't understand but only because I don't play chess. I actually squealed with delight when Genie imitated Bing Crosby and Bob Hope in the third movie. I love their Road To movies.
reply

I am sure someone has pointed this out but in the chess game carpet had already lost. Genies black with king, queen, and pawn(in the back row. Carpet as white has three pawns, bishop, and queen. Carpet has no king so he already lost.
Also I caught all of these as a kid of 10yo when it came out.

reply

Carpet played Queen takes Queen, but genie was just playing bad, carpet probably has a higher ELO than genie, but if genie could have pushed that pawn and stayed off the squares that the Bishop was on he could have delayed the game with better tactics
reply

I always figured I like adult hidden jokes in kid movies because I'm not a parent. That perhaps when I am one I'll think differently. When I think this way, I feel like I'll become a Karin and this makes me not want kids lol.
reply

The brothel one I never noticed cause I always thought he was very well known to where there are folks liked him regardless and others disliked him like the broom lady in the brothel all because he's a street rat.
reply

You're confused. Those girls were in a HAREM, nothing more. You're reading too much into these family friendly films. I'm sure the Disney directors, writers, and actors would allow this innuendo that you are suggesting.
reply

The funniest comment from Genie is Thor in The Prince of Thieves.
-And your name is.
-I'm Thor.
-Your Thor?
-Well, it hurts.
Mrs. Doubtfire is the best mement. Including Forest Gump.

reply

I don't agree, it seems like as long as you were white and familiar with white culture not other race's and not an idiot as a kid the jokes don't really fly over the head. maybe 10% of these did as a kid.
reply

There's a debate as to whether having celebrities do voice work instead of seasoned voice actors makes movies better or worse. Aladdin would not have become the iconic film it is without Robin Williams.
reply

The thing about the Agrabah brothel, is that the ladies in there dress roughly the same as Princess Jasmine. That actually contributed to myself not realizing that it was in fact a brothel.
reply

I think I just saw that as genie was saying Im losing to a rug, it was modeled after Rodney Dangerfield, its almost as if he was gonna say: I got no respect at all, right after that line
reply

I wouldnt even wonder if Disney split their animation team in half, with one half doing the rest of the movie while the other half was animating exclusively what Robin Williams said.
reply

The fact that they put ms doubtfire into aladdin is (for me) a super cool easter egg because ms doubtfire was one my childhood fav. I dont think my fam even knows this exists.
reply

A young audience would not notice the brothel cause the girls are dressed almost like Jasmine anyway. Even when older, I thought they were just more well off ladies.
reply

I agree that this was funny to watch and don't worry you didn't ruin our childhoods,
we did that, by growing up, even tho many still act like children.

reply

a lot of these things were common in cartoons of the time though.
everyone in the village always knows each other. parades have large balloons. etc.

reply

Improvising in animation is usually a big no-no. Takes too much time to fix things. Robin Williams cost not just his salary, but also all the redraws.
reply

Most, if not all the mentioned adult jokes were from Robin Williams alone. The sequel really sucked (except having Jason Alexander voice Abis Mal.
reply

Boy do I feel old. I first saw Robin Williams on Happy Days long before Aladdin. I didnt mind watching Aladdin over and over again with my daughter.
reply

Well, I found that to somewhat misleading! I thought this was to be the top ten jokes in the movie Aladdin, not ALL of the Aladdin movies!
reply

Its so hard to believe both iconic characters the genie voiced by the late and great comedians Robin Williams and Iago aka Gilbert gottfried
