The scene where Buffy finds her mom on the couch is already heartbreaking enough but for me it hit especially close to home. I was 16 when my mom passed not long after giving child birth to my half brother. The saddest part is since we were visiting her every day after HS the night b4 we had gotten our hopes up her Dr told us that she was doing alot better & should be released within a week. So the next night her bf who lived with us came to get us to go see her only he didnt tell us she had passed. So when we get there my sister goes in with him then my uncle there too comes out with us & said arent you going in i said yeah when they get out because its only 2 ppl at a time. That's when he says thats during visiting hours not when some1 passes away. I said what so he said she passed away i told him dont play like thats not funny. He said that he would never joke about something like that. So me him & my sisters bf who was at home with us go in. Im still in disbelief but at least i had been told b4 i went in my sister wasnt told so when i got to where every1 was gathered around my mom i heard my sister talking to her telling her everything was gonna be ok & thst the Dr said she could come home soon. She grabbed her hand then suddenly she tells my dad why is she so cold then she noticed her chest want moving & said dad why isnt she breathing finally she said with her voice cracking as she realizes whats going on dad why did they disconnect her from the machines & she starts crying her eyes out. I still hadnt cried since i was in shock & disbelief not wanting to accept the truth but with the combination of her crying which she never had before at least notcin front of me & the fact that her crying made it real i had to walk out my sister's bf came with me & we got in the elevator still not 1 tear but as soon as the elevator doors closed i broke down couldnt hold it any more he started crying too because he was also close to my mom & to me so we just hugged & cried on each others shoulder for idk how long all i remember is getting down to the lobby & there was some 1 waiting for the elevator when they saw us they apologized & took the next elevator. When we finally gotvout the elevator there was family in the lobby sitting area so they came to console me so i cried even more to the point i had no more tears to cry but im still sniveling thats when my little bro & sister were brought in they also werent told so wheb they saw me they didnt know why i was such a mess. There was 1 incident that pissed me off but also hurt my feelings & thats that my uncle who told me she passed he finally came down after i had stopped crying for a while so he never saw me cry. Thats when he said its ok to cry it doesnt make you less of a man. I know he was just looking out for me but with the emotional roller-coaster i was going thru i took it as he thinks my pride was bigger than my love for my mom when any1 whos close to us know my mom was literally my best friend i would even wrestle with her & do wrestling moves like a power bomb on her bed every1 would laugh plus b4 she went in to the hospital we had our daily routine were we sat outside on the porch & talked for hours while she smoked her cigarettes. Now im not claiming im her fave but my mom did mention to a few ppl that outta all her kids im the 1 she knows she cant count on. One last thing b4 i go im not saying im psychic however i do think there's premonitions sorta like in Final destination. I say that because ive had a few dreams where i predicted tragedy the night b4 or of only it didn't happen exactly how it happened irl. So the night she passed i was asleep & had a dream where my mom & i were having our daily conversation on the porch when in Spanish she says & now every1 will finally cry for me then she started fading away little by little as im screaming mom where you going mom plz dont go mom. At the time it didn't mean anything but after she passed it became clear

Pete and Debbie is their delving into Dr. Jackyl and Mr. Hyde. In Gone, it shows some of the darkness in Buffy's dysfunctional relationship with Spike when she mates with him while he doesn't even know who she is.
Her depression is due to her believing she's dwelling in Hell now; that mayn't be that far off from how come the depressed often wind up committing suicide- and she tries to do that too in that episode.
Therefore, what her friends did was to kidnap her in that event; Rupert Giles wisely rebuked them for their foolishness- had they been right, she'd be a monster by then, had they been wrong about what state she was in, they'd be kidnapping her- an act of profound injustice.
Also, one of the major themes in this show appears to be date-rape in a lot of differing dynamics. marvelous warning indeed.
Interesting take: her being insane, and the show has dealt with that as well; what with her remembered trips to a mental hospital and all that.
Oh, yeah, I'm fully in agreement about the occult being profoundly addictive in all ways.
Tara was right to walk out of that relationship; I mean, for crying out loud, her lover raped her. so it was an act of self-defense for her to walk away from that profoundly abusive situation she'd found herself in.
They also dealt with blackmail and thus a form of slavery when Alexander blackmails Amy into casting a love-spell on Cordelia; it backfires, and every single female besides Cordelia falls head-over-heels in love with Alexander, thus leading to a GHB effect that plays havoc with consent. a felony if nothing else.
Buffy also fears becoming a betrayer; what with her nightmares of becoming a vampire and the like.
Let us not forget the literal devil running the forces of darkness in that show's world; literally Perdition's Red Tsar at that, if nothing else, the first evil, clearly Satan if nothing else- a fraud and a liar who at one point possesses at least one of her buddies.
Also let us not forget the common thread in this kind of fairytale of wizards and witches being gangsters; as well as clearly demons being gangster angels. And let us not forget allies and adversaries in the next life at that.
Buffy's bond with Spike is motivated by lust on both sides' parts, not love at all; hence it always will be profoundly unhealthy.
Let us not forget extramarital affairs on the parts of the Summers' Sisters' parents; and all the mess that adultery and divorce inevitably cause in broken families; as well as the trauma to the children.

That's why season 6 is the best season, the show took another way, different tone and dealed with audacious things and deep issues. More realistic and dark, this is never the season that people who watch the show for the first time prefer, I liked it more when I grew up, and all the characters are in highlight. The writting is so great, the musical is awesome like the end of the season. But I also love the arc and the episodes of season 3 Faith, Mayor, stand alone episodes like Earshot, Doppelgangland, the writting and the arc of season 5 especially about Dawn and Buffy's family, the episodes from season 4 and Willow'storyline, Hush and Restless, Season 2 too for the arc Angelus, Spike, Drusilla. And season 7 is less memorable but great last fight and some centric episodes. This show is still one of the best ever: )

Great list. This could have been turned into a top 15 or even 20 as there a few others that should be discussed. The first that comes to mind is Ted. How charming someone can be but possessive and violent underneath but it also plays on the recently divorced woman dating again and thats something you dont think too much of until you watch the show as an adult. The loss of your virginity, now this is obviously shown in many shows but in Buffy, B, W and X all had completely different experiences at different stages of the show. Also Xanders fear of becoming his father which was his one true fear was a huge part. I think we all fear that we may take after parents worst traits at least once in our life.

The ENTIRE SHOW was tackling serious issues all the time. That's what I love about the show. Of course, I understand these are top 10 times. But, I just wanted to point the former out. Also, number 10 financial hardships--wow. You guys really clawed at the surface of that. The hidden meaning is also found in the critique of the blindness of capitalism. With a socio-economic system built on the idea of greed and individualism, it makes it shuns motherhood and other forms humanitarianism (as symbolized by buffy's slaying. It shows how capitalism was not built for compassion.

gosh, even the shortened clip of Anya's grief filled rant about Joyce being gone still managed to choke me up. watched the show thousands of times and there's so many moments in the show that NEVER ceases to make me cry.
also, James Marsters (Spike) HATED having to film that SA scene. he said in an interview that he begged Joss to find another way around it and that he didn't have to act that out and Joss said no. ( for good reason, he had a huge reason why Spike had to go that low and have that wake-up call for the events that follow, plus other reasons.

I understand why you didn't show more of the bathroom scene with Spike and Buffy but it was an incredibly traumatic scene that depicts what many women have actually gone through in real life. They got away with as much as they could for public television back then but Spike was doing more than just overpower Buffy he was attempting to do something else to her. It was an absolutely brutal and shocking scene and still is to this day. He was very creepily saying he knows she loves him because she let him inside of her among other crazy stuff.

Well for me I did not find anything in this set of scenes that interesting. Those things are overshadowed when considered in comparison to Buffy; s almost irrational belief in the good in Spike throughout the last few episodes in the last season of Buffy. That was a display of the faith of Buffy that went far beyond the logic that those around her were espousing. OK spoiler alert for those of you who never saw the last episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer called Chosen, Buffy's faith in Spike was finally rewarded in a big way.

Watching the later seasons as an adult really hits different. Being in your 20s is a really confusing and difficult time. Some people are in college, some are working, some don't know what the hell they want to do with their lives. Some people are battling addiction or depression while some are getting married. I've never seen a show capture what young adulthood feels like as well as BTVS. The show was always at its best when it was using the supernatural to serve as metaphors for the harshness of real life.

Why would anyone not want buffy confused? Most of us straight people would be quite thoroughly confused at an admission. Not that someone being gay is confusing but that one of our closest friends his a huge part of themselves for years and we bought into it until they pulled this 180 to reveal the liar that they have always been. It's actually quite realistic or are straight cis gender people not allowed to be portrayed or exist in your fantasy zone?
reply

I don't know why but there's this part that really stuck with me. After Buffy digs herself out of the ground, Spike can tell what's happened to her without asking her where she came from or what happened because he can see her wrecked fingers from digging herself out. He's angry with everyone not for bringing her back, but for leaving her in the ground to dig herself out. He explains that he knows how awful it is because he had to dig HIMSELF out.

I used to be addicted to Buffy and the Scooby Gang! Loved every bit, cried when Joyce died and hearing Buffy call mommy it really tugs at the human side of the show-reality hits hard! Made me so appreciative I had my mum. I adored Spike out for a walkbth! Very comical and he was better than Angel he had humour. The one thing that confused me is where the hell did they get all those nice clothes from if they were students or had no money?

I didnt care for the first episode of this show so I didnt watch it live. Not until I started catching reruns of season 6 did I fall for it. Yeah its the most hated season but its easily the strongest most personal season. Its not just a relatable superhero show at that point, its where real life consequences and bad choices catch up to all the characters and they have to pass through fire. Perfect for the penultimate season.

To me, there is 2 major episodes showing the range and talent in film making and acting. they are 4x10 Hush (No dialogs, musics) and its opposite, 5x16 the Body (No music at all, great wrting, great acting and filming. Too often, cinema use music to get sentiments out of the audience. But here. in this one. Just acting. moving dialogs. Filmed almost like someone had a camera on its hand. Damned.

I think the episode where Joyce passes was definitely one of the saddest ones a lot of people have gone through it and are still grieving even if it happened years ago, that can also lead to depression I feel like that's why most people have it, but also the episode where spike tries stuff with Buffy even though she said no, it's a really big problem in society today and it might always be.

Whenever I get glimpses of this old show I always stop and think of the challenges Michelle Geller had in portraying a character many times more naive than herself. It's usually fine when it's comedy, but Michelle had to approach the role seriously. The career risk of getting pigeon holed as an overly emotional dunce. Her later roles begin to make more sense when you consider it.

The body broke my heart. I couldnt imagine losing someone like your mom. It was so well written and really tackled that issue in a good way. And also the scene with Spike and Buffy in Seeing Red. I saw it once but now when I watch that episode I have to skip the scene because its uncomfortable for me to watch since I lived through 4 situations like that

Just this past September James Marsters came to Canada the day he arrived happened to be my girlfriend's birthday and she loves Buffy The Vampire Slayer so I took her to see him. The 2 had a great conversation. She asked him to sign this large poster she drew of Spike herself. Marsters himself was impressed even encouraged her to keep drawing.

What about bullying. I did like Cordelia and Harmony in Angel but in the first seasons of Buffy they where just plain spoiled biathes who bullied everyone they condered to be geeks. Or having divorced parents like Buffy had. I always viewed giles becoming kinda a surragate dad to Buffy as the show grown

Both the all-musical episode and the all-silent episode about Joyce's death deserved Emmys.
But The Suits refused to shell out the cash to win voters with promotions, advertising, and viewing parties.
The Suits thought Buffy was just kids' stuff. That's why they were Suits not Creatives.

The Body is the only episode I cannot watch. I live that episode 10 years ago when I woke up one morning and after I let the dogs out. I went to go wake my mum up so I could take her to the doctors and she was dead. Even 911 asked if I wanted to try cpr. I said no she was cold
reply

Not for nothing, I really liked Buffy's reaction to Willow telling her she was gay. Buffy's weird about it at first, but then there is this wonderful moment on her face when she realizes how ridiculous she is being then buckles down to be her friend and willing to listen.

I love Buffy and can keep watching it over and over without getting bored but the relationship spike really made me uncomfortable because he was too obsessed with her. I liked him in the earlier season when they hated one another
reply

anya has one of the best character development arcs ever. we saw her go from literal demon to a demon analyzing and being sympathetic to human emotions to becoming human and having to figure out her own emotions and learn to live.
reply

That rape scene was traumatizing. Buffy was depicted as someone who can kick butt but all that was thrown out the window when Spike tried to rape her. Buffy represented woman who have been raped and how that is traumatizing.
reply

The episode with Ted also tackled domestic violence, and how victims arent believed by the people around them. Joyce, Xander and Willow didnt believe Buffy when she said Ted threatened her because Ted was nice to them.
reply

Phrasing child mistreatment / child abuse as Minor Mistreatment made it sound like Not Very Serious Mistreatment (which I analyzed as a confused Microaggressions. Could've chosen a less misleading term there.

What's wrong with their skin? Looks like a strong filter was put all over. It looks very unnatural to me (which is probably a good thing, cause it means that the filtered look is not yet the new normal.

For me the darkest episode on a social issue is Riley and self harm when he allows himself to be fed upon. I also found the issue of social isolation dealt with in Invisible Girl to gnaw away at me.
