It was big on laughs, but TBBT could get serious too. For this list, well be looking at times this long-running sitcom got real about relatable personal or world issues. Our countdown includes body image struggles, women in science, mental health, and more! Which serious Big Bang moment resonated with you the most?

One fact that wasn't pointed out: the most are are most guilty of discouraging women from going into science are. women. Example: one episode I avoid is season 11 episode 2. You know why? because in that episode, when Amy and Bernadette agree to brag to each other about their achievements, they end up tearing each other apart for it. Another example: when 2 women are speaking to a group of girls over the phone about how women should ignore anyone who tells them to value their bodies over their minds and they say this while putting on make-up and dressing up as princesses, and the troll who ruins the moment isn't a chauvinistic man, but a woman whose brain is worth 1 cent, just like her name suggests.
It's worth noting that Sheldon and Amy never argue about money. That's how you do it in a good relationship.
Not all women feel maternal. And yet, all 3 of the main ones got pregnant. I don't think this show did a good job in letting women know that it's okay to not feel maternal. Also, again, it's the women who sabotage the women. Bernadette sabotaged Barbara Chen. Penny was the one who blabbed about Bernadette's first pregnancy. Ruchi was the one who tried to sabotage Bernadette during her second pregnancy. Men never did anything wrong here.
I wish my mom was Leonard's mom, so it's insane how much Leonard complaining about it.

I don't like how they made Penny not want to have kids and made her pregnant anyways (especially with the unconsenting conception. It felt extremely forced. I know it was the final season and they had to find a way to wrap up everyone's stories, but if Penny had to be pregnant by the end of the series, they could've done a much better job with what would lead up to that. I had a theory that Penny could've had fertility issues and that could have impacted her decision whether or not she wanted children, but obviously (since this show is written by men, that never happened.
Fortunately, I found another show that handled this topic rather well. It's animated, but still good.

And most of this list is fine (all of the comments about women choosing and remaining child free are spot on, and Amy and Sheldon's relationship is going at his pace, not hers) no one addresses the fact that Sheldon would never have any friends at all and is abusive as hell to Amy. One or two moments of empathy do not make up for a constant barrage of nagging and negative comments and being mean and narcissistic.

#2 kills me because Leonard's mother did not deserve to be forgiven. She has been an awful mother throughout his life. She should be embarrassed and ashamed of her behavior, but of course, she isn't. Her arrogant I didn't ask you to forgive me just drove home that she never thought she did anything wrong. Leonard should have thrown her out and gone NC. Sometimes toxic relationships should be left behind.

It bothered me that Penny also ended up pregnant in the finale. It was one thing for Bernadette to end up getting pregnant and changing her mind about wanting to be a mother, but for them to do turn around and do the same thing with Penny later? They just played into the Oh, you'll change your mind, hur-hur thing too hard. Can't we at least have one woman who doesn't want kids, and be okay with that?

Just like when I watched your list of the top 10 saddest BBT moments I knew right away what #1 was going to be on this list as well. The moment might not have been as tragic had it not been for the real life passing of the actress. It just hurts on a whole other level because of the real life death.

I understand these serious issues, I once got an apology from a bully, and was asked for forgiveness. I did forgive and accepted apology, while I know not everyone gets that opportunity it was an amazing experience. Some times I've had to give myself the closure I needed. So this is was so interesting.

Even though characters made huge developments throughout the show, TBBT was still very problematic when it comes to women, male characters' behaviours towards women, and feminine dynamics in the girls group. I could say from beginning to end, the show could be easily consired as misogynist.
reply

Not too sure if Body image struggles is the best fit for this list when so many of the jokes on the show are just simply the male characters existing with the bodies they have. But I guess they put it on the list because it was Amy talking about it and not Leonard or Howard.
reply

I never liked that after having her own storyline about not wanting children Bernadette was so condescending to Penny when she found out Penny didnt want children. Youd think shed be the most understanding since she had to deal with the same judgement for her truth.
reply

Millions of people never have kids, and it's far more common among the highly intelligent & highly educated, due to their diligent use of contraception. TBBT is one of dozens of TV shows & film which push the ridiculous claim that you need kids to have a complete/full life.
reply

Male scientists substantially outnumber female because the profession appeals to far more men than women. Its the same reason that the large majority of builders, firefighters, soldiers, police officers, lumberjacks, plumbers, carpenters, electricians & mechanics are men.
reply

Sure, both become mothers in the end. '
Well, that's lovely. way to justify all the people who say, One day, you'll change your mind. Are there examples of women on the show who don't want kids and, ya know, don't have kids? Cuz if not, it kinda undermines the message.

reply

It's always heartbreaking when someone dies. And in shows it can be very disorientating when a cast member dies. It's more real when they have the character die with the actor. The show often reflects how everyone in the cast feels. Like Mr. Hooper on Sesame Street.
reply

I'm just really happy that the show didn't act like Amy was wrong for looking like she did, or acted like she was fat. just that she didn't dress modern, but everyone loves her anyways. its only when she wants to change, that anyone acts like she should
reply

Raj was the only one who never really hooked up with a permanent girlfriend by series end, however, he did date a few different women, once he got over his shyness. He ends up taking Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) to the Nobel ceremony which is hilarious.

2: 04 - 2: 45 What happened to Amy was a litte bit curious for me. She never showed huge interest in change her look after, but writers decided suddenly at TBBT last episode she would have issues about it and do herself a makeover?
reply

It was disappointing that they decided to have Penny be pregnant in the series finale. She said she didn't want kids in earlier seasons. Having her be pregnant in the end really diminishes the valid choice she had already made.
reply

While I liked that they addressed that not all women want to have children, I wish that they'd had Bernadette and Penny stick to their morals. Sure, they could have changed their minds, but it felt like a cop-out.
reply

i cant be the only one who sees the irony in this video being called top 10 times tbbt got serious while amy and bernadette are putting on lipgloss and wearing princess dresses in the thumbnail.
reply

I thin kit would've been better if Leanrrd didn't forgive his mother she didn't deserve it and it feels like after making no effort to improve her relationship with him she still won somehow?
reply

Watching Sheldon comfort Howard was so touching, and had him show a rare moment of empathy. Nobody else in the group had lost a parent before, so only Sheldon could relate on that same level.

One of my closest friends suffers from selective mutism, he can't speak to teachers. I really hate to see everyone treating this real and serious problem as a choice.
reply

ahh rats. im gonna rewatch the whole thing again for the millionth time. its barely been half a year since the last time i did that. every show on tv sucks now
reply

i wish raj would have ended up with amy, if it was really important for eveeryone to be with someone. their character chemistry was much more natural
reply

Losing Howards mom is still gut wrenching. I still get choke up about it along when Howards home lose electricity and the last food his mom made
reply

Bernadette & Penny are clearly unsuited to motherhood & don't want to have kids. Could the writers not have had at least one of them keep to that?
reply

Penny is certain throughout that she never wants kids, then she unintentionally becomes pregnant, and is bizarrely immediately delighted!
reply

Sheldon is autistic. you never got that, did you.
Women alter their body based on what others think of them. You don't get that, do you.
