Recently I started re-watching Family Matters from the beginning as I'd only ever seen the episodes in whatever order on TV back in the 90's growing up. There was an episode that had to deal with racism and was pretty shocking to see the extent of what was in the show and that it aired. The 90's were a much different time and I don't think it'd fly today but still.
During black history month, Laura wondered why they only had a month of learning about how black people have contributed to the country and the world as a whole. So she decides to go to one of the teachers and ask to make it either part of the curriculum, or to make it an entire history course. It is not too well received among some of the racist white kids in the school that it is being pushed to teach black history. So they make it a point to bully her and even go to the lengths of breaking into her locker, stealing stuff and then when she finds it, she closes the door to reveal the N-word has been painted on the other side of the locker door. Naturally she is distraught and if not for a heart warming and prodding conversation with Mama Winslow about her trying to make change in the neighborhood she grew up in- where she wasn't allowed to enter a library because it was whites only, she is then driven to complete her mission of having the class taught at the school. Despite facing challenges with other faculty up to the principal, she turns the lunchroom into a poster filled knowledge arena where at the end of the episode both the blacks and non blacks fight their hatred and come to grips with what is presented in front of them. The show does a great job of not making the awkwardness feel too drawn out because it is a sitcom after all, but it does drive the point home very well and shows the err of our ways (similar to nearly every other episode for that matter) and how evil can hurt people, even if it's not physical pain and suffering. The reveal of the painted locker is what shocked me the most. Not in it's cruelty towards Laura because of the color of her skin, as I'm well aware of how cruel racists can be, but in the fact that it was allowed to be aired considering it was the HARD R version of the word.

Ted Danson's show Becker had an episode called Subway Story that was heartbreaking.
(Spoilers)
The episode basically centers around Becker (Danson) having to deal with an elderly tourist who keeps getting lost on the way to her destination. When he finally gets her to the right stop. She sits on a bench and says she can't.
It's then slowly revealed that she's headed to the memorial site of the Twin Towers, and that her son was one of the people who died that terrible day. Real gut-punch stuff.

I sitcom moment Ill never forget is tbe death of Jody in the 3rd season of Mom. Jody, played my Emily osment, was a teenage addiction who the group befriended and was helping throughout the 3rd season. In the finally she relapsed and ODd. Even for a show that dealt with heavy topics like addition, rape, and abuse it was a real gut punch.

You left some good sitcom moments off the list. Steve accidentally taking the diet pills one of Laura's friends gave her, Laura's friend carrying a gun for protection and then getting shot with that same gun, the Full House episodes where DJ starves herself and Stephanie finds out that her classmate is being abused by his dad

Lots of MASH episodes are memorable, very emotional show. Another is when Edith Bunker died. And when the dad died in Good Times and Esther Roll gave her damn damn damn speech and smashed the bowl. There were a lot of really touching moments on Frasier too, mostly between Frasier and his dad. 70s era TV had a lot of heart.

I would say there a couple of moments on Fraiser that involve Martin. One is when Niles is having his heart surgery and we see the x rays that Martin's wife is dying. Also where Martin goes to the parole hearing for the man who shot him and seeing the criminals mother there has always been heavy moments from Fraiser.

The bicycle man episode is hilarious since people learned nothing from it or the countless other things like it from that era. Nowadays teens are told to lie and hate their parents and trust strangers. Sickening honestly since certain younger groups face serious mental crisis in our nation

how did mateo even get a job from a legit business if hes not a citizen? there are a ton of forms that would have to be filled out unless he worked for cash. its also hard to get deported. it takes years lol. that whole plotline was so unrealistic

I anticipated M. A. S. H. Being number 1 but I thought it would be the final episode when Hawkeye was afraid of the North Korean patrol and fearing that the crying baby would give them away, did the unthinkable. Very disturbing scene.

Crazy that HIMYM could potentially be on this list for multiple reasons. Lilys postpartum depression, Robin not having kids, Barney finding light being a dad, etc. But no scene from Friends would ever be on a list like this lol

Honorable Mention goes to Moesha. In Season 5 they pulled off a rather awful twist where Frank, Moesha's dad, is not her cousin's Dorian uncle. but also his dad. That one night stand twist really ruined his character.

The breakup between Dre and Bow in Black-ish was so dum imo. There really was no strong motivation for them to react the way they did. It felt like forced writing to create shock drama in the show.

6: 35 A PSA should've been spoken in that you never leave a friend behind, especially when YOU feel the need to leave the situation. Arnold was basically this is weird so I'm leaving attitude, js.

A comedy teaches kids not to trust people who tell them to lie to their parents. Today, some teachers online advocate for and/or admit telling kids to lie to their parents about gender topics.

Its weird to call it a surprising moment for Big Bang Theory when they literally had no choice but to say something. The beloved cast member who played Howards mother died in real life.

Nothing will ever hit me harder than when John Ritter died and the episode that aired following his death in 8 Simple Rules. That was the heaviest moment I've ever seen in a tv show.
reply

As per Brooklin 99, they managed to include the topic without making the show annoying to anyone, without ruining it completely. Something that The Rookie failed miserably.

That is a shocking moment in scrubs but not the most for that show. Cox discovering he just gave patients rabies infected organs leading to ALL their deaths was the most shocking.
reply

ive seen scrubs start to finish literally over 100 times. I didnt misuse the word literally. I mean literally. And 'where do you think we are' still drops my heart to my stomach

The one that really stuck with me was the Family Ties episode where Alex's close friend dies in a car accident and he completely breaks down. That was a powerful episode.

the cloud 9 one hurt. i saw that shit first hand, i mean i wish we wouldve tried like they did but their really is nothing you can do after that point. and thats just sad.

The fresh prince, scene always gets to me. Some dads are actually like this. MOJO, I love your contents. The mash one always gets to me as well. Keep ya head up.

The episode of 8 Simple Rules where they had to face John Ritters death will forever live in the back of my mind and should have definitely been mentioned here.
reply

Ben's death in Scrubs the most overrated scene in the show. There was at least half dozen more dramatic moments which actually resulted development in characters.
reply

John C. McGinley has my greatest respect for his acting skills. You can see the moment of realisation in his eyes when he truly knows Ben is dead.
reply

5: 02 but if you want us to see something different, you need to show us something different It's not just something we are going to hand over.
reply

Scrubs - bens death. all day every day. Was crying so bad first time I heard that where do you think we are? Such an amazing episode.
reply

I distinctly remember #6, All In the Family, when Gloria lost the baby. When Archie was all alone weeping for the lost grandchild.
reply

That Different Strokes episode was awful. The audience laughed all the way through it as they were not told it was a special episode.
