I just want to point out that although the Neo-Nazis showed up to the first premier of Parade, they haven't shown their faces since. (They didn't even show their faces then since they all wore masks. Ironic that someone finally got them to wear masks) But the show is doing really well and no one should fear for their safety if they go. They have police hang out outside the theater just in case, but all the protests seemed to have accomplished was increasing ticket sales.
The show is incredibly beautiful and moving and it is very timely. I didn't see the original production, but I can't imagine that it's better than this one. It's going to be nominated for a bunch of Tonys and I think it deserves to win them all. I would recommend it to anyone. If you can't get to NY, check out the soundtrack. It was just released on Thursday.
I've seen it 3 times so far. I first saw it at New York City Center, then in previews, and then the day after it opened on Broadway. I'm taking my mother to see it in a few weeks and I have tix for the final performance. Although something tells me that between May and July, I'll probably end up seeing it at least one more time. LOL My personal record for seeing a Broadway show is six, which was the recent production of Into the Woods. I think I'll end up matching that, if not beating it, with Parade. That's odd to say because the subject matter is SO DARK, but it's just a masterpiece.
Last time I saw it, I was seated next to a chatty older woman (she was super sweet, the first thing she said was how pretty I looked, and during intermission she was asking me questions but then she'd say, Don't tell me. I don't want to know. LOL When the show ended and the lights came up, all she could say was, That was the best thing I've ever seen. Just bring tissues! If you don't cry at that show, I don't think you have a soul. LOL

I think the lyrics from the song Wonderful, in Wicked, best describes how we've all learned history. A man's called a traitor or liberator. A rich man's a thief or philanthropist. Is one a crusader or ruthless invader? It's all in which label is able to persist. There are precious few at ease with moral ambiguities, so we act as if they don't exist.
Remember, it's the victors who write the story that got passed down as truth. You can accuse Disney (& I'm no great supporter) and others of glossing over inconvenient truths, but that's the way history has always been told, in order to validate and justify the reasons for destroying other cities, cultures, and peoples that got in the way of whatever one leader or group wanted to do. It is still happening today and always will until mankind stops desiring what someone else has.

Any historical event or figure that has had a musical based on them never is accurate. However, there is a lot of disputes about what the real Bonnie and Clyde story is.
Also, _Sweeny Todd_ was partly inspired by a real female killer who murdered her boss. and boiled her fat to make lard she sold to people in London.
The musical about Andrew Jackson, though, isn't at all wrong. He was not the hero some believed him to be.
No. Mary Fagin's real murderer was found and it was a black man who was an initial suspect.
Lastly, Emma Goldman was a Marxist, and never should have been exulted like she has been.

I think Cabaret should be on the list. Its very clever in pulling you in with the sincerity of songs like Tomorrow Belongs To Me only for you to realise too late you are being drawn in by a Nazi song. The show displays the struggles of people knowing that the Third Reich was growing in power and that their lives were genuinely threatened.
The Colour Purple also deserves an honourable mention. The struggles of domestic abuse within a segregated community is a tough sell, yet the movie and broadway show got a lot of attention.

The woke crowd refuses to put history into its proper context. Atrocities are not even a bad thing when understood in light of the realities of the day. Some might even call them good things. In the least, they were part of the Indigenous cultures so that means even the woke people MUST respect them. I find that people who arent really into theatre assume that these shows are just jazz hands, smiles and leg kicks (though we love to see it) when in reality, a lot of theatre is very dark and deals with a lot of taboo subject manner (depending on the time it first came out - it may have been taboo for the time but not so much now. Im glad some of these lesser known shows like Parade, Ragtime, and The Scottsboro Boys are getting a most deserved shoutout.

There is a great book called The Girls of Murder City: Fame, Lust, and the Beautiful Killers who Inspired Chicago by Douglas Perry. It even goes into the woman who inspired the character of the Hungarian woman who was executed even though she was innocent.

I found it necessary to point out but Broadway is entertainment that last around 2 to 3 hours.
It's not going to be able to cover every single fabric of a person's life where Legacy nor should that responsibility be placed on it IMHO.

Its strange that Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson was overwhelmingly chastised and shut down for historical accuracies, but Hamilton gets universal praise and box office longevity on Broadway for historical inaccuracies.
