Im a Baby Boomer and I really appreciate you including the death of Old Yeller. Even decades later, that scene still tears me up. Once I was on the subway and heard a man in my age group telling his teenage daughters how much Old Yellers death affected him when he saw the movie as a child. The girls were laughing in disbelief and as the father looked around in frustration, he was me nodding in agreement. He eagerly asked to back him up which I did to his daughters astonishment. They were even more astonished when three other Boomer-aged passengers also chimed in. The dad thanked us all and the two girls just looked wide eyed.

I was hoping itd finally be mentioned in one of these lists, but I see its still not recognized. Schindlers List and Saving Private Ryan I agree with but saddest movie Ive ever seen has been Barefoot Gen. What he and his family went through at the end of the war is comparable to Grave of the Fireflies but the dropping of the atomic bomb and surviving in Hiroshima afterwards puts it at a whole other level, especially knowing the story is based off the writers personal experience. There are so many movies about the Holocaust but so few about the atomic bombings.

A number of these I've seen - and cried through - more than once. Grave of the Fireflies I've seen 4 or 5 times, and start crying in the first 5 minutes. every time. However, there has only ever been one movie that saddened me to the point where, although I thought it was an incredible movie, I'll never watch again, and that's Revolutionary Road.
Another movie that made me cry harder than almost any other is I'm Not Ashamed, the true story of Rachel Scott, one of the Columbine martyrs. Even my husband was wiping his eyes.

and the most heartbreaking things happen in English (and mostly to white people? You get GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES, possibly because it released a dubbed version.
If you're looking for heartbreaking World War II fiction movies that aren't about the Shoah, you might look for Soviet-era retrospectives: BALLAD OF A SOLDIER, DESTINY OF A MAN, IVAN'S CHILDHOOD, COME AND SEE.
For love/death crossovers, you need to go black-and-white: The 1937 CAMILLE, the 1939 WUTHERING HEIGHTS, LETTER FROM AN UNKNOWN WOMAN

I would have to add The Diving Bell and the Butterfly to this list. Its a French based on a true story film and tells the story of the French editor of Elle Magazine who suffers a stroke and gets locked in syndrome. Its told from his perspective. Its depressing as hell, but I love it.
Honorable mentions:
Steel Magnolias
Still Alice
Beaches
Hilary and Jackie
Seven Pounds
Happiness
The Ice Storm
American History X
Dead Poets Society
Pay It Forward

I'm quite a chill, open-minded person, but just to be clear: If _Brokeback Mountain_ and _The Grave of the Fireflies_ and _The Green Mile_ aren't recognized here, I won't bother watching this! Those are three of the best tragic pieces of literature ever written and their screen adaptations have all been so authentic, heart-breaking. And I am not usually a crier!

Schindler's list had a strange delayed effect on me.
Watched it, cried a lot, moved on.
Then, a few weeks later, I went shopping for my nieces's christmas presents. I was browsing children's clothes, and I saw a red coat. Out of nowhere, I started bawling in the middle of the mall.
Took me a good five minutes to get a grip.

Get the story right! Young Bryony DELIBERATELY lies about events because she's so jealous of her sister's relationship with the young man she's crushing on. Bryony is a vile, malicious, nasty, money grubbing wretch who uses her past actions to write herself a hit book with no repercussions on herself.

SAVING PRIVATE RYAN AND THE FAULT IN OUR STARS SHOULD'VE BEEN HIGHER THAN TITANIC. AND REQUIEM FOR A DREAM DEFINITELY SHOULD'VE BEEN THE LAST IF IT EVEN BELONGS ON THE LIST (I personally don't think it does) AND THE MOVIE IF I STAY SHOULD'VE BEEN ON THE LIST!

Rocky Balboa. #6 in the ROCKY franchise, the movie ends in typical Rocky triumph, however it also takes us through the heartbreak of Rocky as he copes with the loss of his wife Adriann, who was his rock through out the entire franchise.

P. S. I love you. I specifically went to that movie alone because I knew I'd end up bawling. I'd lost a dear cousin not long before that movie came out. He was 35 and left a wife and a 3 month old baby. It just hit too close to home.

In Atonement, Briony had a crush on Robbie. Thats why she pretended to drown so that Robbie would have to rescue her. She then walks in on Robbie & her sister in the library & thats when she accuses him, despite knowing the truth.

The Green Mile is definitely a tear jerker. Stephen King wrote an excellent story. Michael Clark Duncun was absolutely amazing in his part.

This list is pretty good actually. However, there are a few that are missing, of course just my humble opinion! My Girl & Stepmom for sure.
