Another often forgotten child star is Jane Withers she had her breakthrough in the 1934 film Bright Eyes with Shirley Temple where she basically played the anti-Temple in the film lol and she had a few hit films of her own in the late 30s and early 40s and starring alongside greats like Henry Fonda, Janet Gaynor, Gene Autry and a young Rita Cansino later to be known as Rita Hayworth she like many child stars had difficulty transitioning to more mature roles and retired from acting early but she did make a brief comeback in the hit 1956 film Giant alongside legends Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean

OMG. Pollyanna was and is still one of my favorite Disney movies of all time. God, I love that movie. And The Parent Trap too! ICONIC films.
And Spelndor in the Grass.
ALL these actors and actresses are absolutely incredible, and their work STILL lives on today. However, Shirley Temple is my favorite. I grew up watching SO MANY of her movies. I adore her. Although I was born in the 90s, still she was and still one of my favorite actresses to have ever lived.

I was already singing Good ship lollipop out loud as the honourable mentions bit was playing, because I knew just what was coming up. An absolutely wonderful lady.
My long departed dear old mum was a big Deanna Durbin fan. And was coincidentally born just a few weeks before the release of my favourite film of all time starring yet another lovely lady from this list. The Wizard of Oz.

Natalie Wood's movies from her childhood are just amazing. Her performance in Tomorrow Is Forever with Orson Wells is superb as is Miracle on 34th Street. I also like Hayley Mills' work in The Parent Trap and That Darn Cat. I like Patty Duke's performance in The Miracle Worker and The Patty Duke Show. All three of these woman starred in iconic roles as adults.

As an old movie buff, I love your list. Nothing against Lindsay Lohan, I thought she did a good job on Parent Trap(1998) but did not have the same magic that Hayley Mills had in the original version, throw in Brian Keith and Maureen OHara and you have a classic! One of my favorite movies!

Good list. Plenty of big child stars were left out, but you have to draw the line somewhere. I think over 1/2 of the list were active in the 1930s. Bonita Granville, Oscar nominated at 13, and the original big screen Nancy Drew, was another who could have made it.

Great picks except Jerry Mathers-not a Hollywood child star IMO- but certainly TV! Some other Honorable Mentions possibly? (Jane Withers and Robert Blake (then called Bobby Blake) Also the first America's Sweetheart Mary Pickford who started at age 10.

A glaring omission of one child star you missed who had a good adult career was Dean Stockwell. Although much of his adult success was in television, he gave a fine performance as Harry Dean Stanton's brother in the avant-garde film Paris, Texas.

My favorite is Freddie B. My favorite movie of his is Little Lord Fauntleroy. I could watch that every day. Almost all of them were really good, so its hard to pick. Love Hayley Mills, Margaret, Natalie, Mickey, Judy and the number 1 Shirley. Good list!

I'd have at least given Virginia Weidler an honorable mention. She was a major child star of the 30s and 40s. Her most famous roles were as Norma Shearer's daughter in The Women (1939, Young Tom Edison (1940) & The Philadelphia Story (1940.

Saraah of MsMojo, I think Ms. Judy Garland enjoyed skipping rope, playing jacks, etc. with Margaret OBrien and the other younger kids because it brought her back to what I imagine is a more fun and laid back time in her life.

Excellent list! Shirley Temple is my favorite child actor of all time! My grandmother had a bunch of her films on videocassette so I would watch them with her when I was a kid. And I still enjoy them to this very day!

The fact that Judy Garland went through so much mistreatment and still became one of the most recognizable names in Hollywood is a testament to how talented and determined she was. May she rest in peace.

Margaret O'Brien is one of my favorites. She was so intelligent and always stood out to me. I am glad she was on this list because I often feel she is underrated as an actress! I love everyone on this list too!

You left out Dean Stockwell he was a child star from the 40s he was more busier than Mickey Rooney, Liz Taylor, and Natalie Wood but he's also best known as Sam Beckett's sidekick on Quantum Leap.

Excellent list. Shirley Temple deserves the top spot - her movies brought in huge money and gave people pleasure. Too bad that both Natalie Wood and Judy Garland had tragic deaths.

IMO Mickey Rooney is hands down the best actor to play Puck. I watch A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935) at least two or three times a year.

Seeing Roddy McDowall as an honourable mention makes me think of my grandfather. They were pen pals for a brief time during their youths.

You missed Ron Howard. He was a child star, a teenage star on into his twenties and went on to be a Academy Award winning director.
