_The Graduate_ 's ending was supposed to be that way, and it was good. The entire reality was the fact that, in rejecting what others wanted for them, they had to find out who they really are together (which really is how it should be.
_2001_ really is just. weird. As a sci-fi fan, it really was too far out of reality.
_Psycho_ was revolutionary for the time, because it really made a chilling reality forward, that dissociative personality disorder really can be that dangerous.
_Sunset Boulevard_ isn't just a movie. it's all too real. It is in every actor and actress who fights to stay relevant. and is willing to embrace violence in order to remain so. Just look at all of the ones who hitched themselves to the most repugnant of ideologies, Marxism, in order to do so.

I think you missed two that were really out there and didnt even get an honorable mention. Titanic and the sixth sense. Jack, dies, and Bruce Willis is dead the whole time. Both of those are unique and cinema changing for very different reasons. After Titanic came out, there was a lot of romantic movies that ended sadly. And the sixth sense after the big twist reveal, there was a lot of movies that went that way, and that had twists and turns and crazy endings. The first two that you have are absolutely cinema changing and they deserved to be in this number two and number one spot. But Titanic and sixth sense shouldve been there somewhere.

Casablancas ending is timeless because it avoids the romance cliche. We wanted our protagonists to get together, but they must ultimately put their feelings aside for the greater good! Its done in such a wonderful way where you dont hate Rick, Ilsa or Victor for the ultimate outcome.
Its a genius conclusion that the crew fought over other ending alternatives to get the right one, and thankfully, they really did find the right ending!

Some good choices here, though putting The Graduate in 10th is kinda criminal. It should be much higher and Thelma & Louise or Gone with the Wind should have bumped out The Shawshank Redemption (it's a very nice ending but defined cinema. no.

50 first dates has a really beautiful ending. Maybe not the most iconic of all film, but if you are looking for endings that punch above the weight of the rest of the film. also I always have thought Shawshank should have ended with Red on the bus.

To me, Citizen Kane is more than its cinematic innovations, it really is one of the greatest Rise And Fall Character Studies in film, and the image of the Rosebud Sled burning at the end cements that.

These are all mainstream films. I like the ending of the Indie film, King of Hearts. There's Pvt Plumpick standing there at the gate of the mental health facility. Once you watch it, you'll never forget it!
