According to Cheryl Crane (daughter of Lana Turner, when Christina Crawford's book Mommie Dearest came out, she went to her mother to ask if she knew about Joan's abusive behavior. Lana said everyone in Hollywood knew about it, but didn't say anything to protect their careers. I believe this is why Bette feuded with Joan and made work on the set of Baby Jane difficult to do - as a form of punishment. Bette wasn't the easier person to work with, but she could stand up for others when she needed to.
