While I agree that Ivy is clearly Marilyn, I actually also see Karen as Norma Jean, and they could have portrayed both parts of the character similar to the way they did in a movie called Norma Jean and Marilyn, using two different actresses.
Granted it might be tricky on a Broadway stage, but not entirely impossible, with the right lightning and dance movements.
And Megan Hilty is definitely a powerhouse performer I know, I saw her play Glinda in Wicked.
And I also voted for Katherine McPhee to win her season of American Idol.

13: 45 Megan Hilty won her Tony Award for her performance in 2016 Noises Off, Not the Television series Smash (which would be an Emmy Award, not a Tony. I like both actresses as they play different time periods and aspects of both Norma Jean and Marilyn Monroe. Ivy gets Baby Grand but Karen gets Don't Forget Me.

Ivy would be a better Marilyn, but, as controversial as this might be, i much prefer McPhee's 'Don't Forget Me. ' Her voice just slices through those top notes so cleanly and I feel Hilty is pushing it a little too hard. runs for cover

Yassssssss I missed the show so much but the end of season 2 was getting way too off. Ain’t gonna lie Ivy I think deserved it because she had that fierceness but just like Derek said Karen had something else.

Forever team Ivy, it wasn’t even close, part of why I was so captivated by this show was because my mind could not comprehend how a group of SUCH talented people could even think that Karen can come close to Ivy.
reply

As if this was ever a question. Smash's biggest flaw was the notion that we were ever supposed to believe it was a contest between Ivy and Karen for who would make the better Marilyn Monroe
reply

I love them both. Ivy is more Marilyn, but McPhee is a much better dancer (though they made clever choreography that made Hilty look good, though she's not a dancer.
reply

Definitely Ivy, no contest about it. Megan Hilty really should play Marilyn Monroe if they ever made a real life musical on her life.

I loved this show! I debated back and forth for a while but Karen won out for me. it was all about the voice in the end.
