What I always found offensive as a child is that the good sets came with either a light skinned, blonde haired, blue-eyed barbie, or a dark skinned, dark hair, dark eyed barbie. At that time all doll companies split that way and I as a light skinned, brown haired, brown eyed child was disappointed. I preferred Theresa from the Barbie line but like I mentioned none of the good sets came with her. I often chose the dark-skinned, dark haired, dark-eyed dolls a lot even though I was light skinned because I felt they better matched my darker eyes and hair (which there is nothing wrong with but I would have liked a dark haired, dark eyed light skinned doll besides Theresa occasionally)
Also, I thought the pregnant Midge doll was great. It's not like girls weren't thinking of having their Barbies be pregnant before. Mine often were.

For no reason I'll add another controversy based on my own opinion. The precursor to Barbie is Bild Lilli. A German newspaper comic strip character and doll. Mattel bought out Bild Lilli. 'Cuz Murica. Production of the precursor stopped. (I think the comic is still a thing, but I'm not certain) I'm actually so arrogant, I would've preferred it if Mattel altered Barbie just enough to be legally distinct. Which they did c. the '60's/'70's. Uh, but they let Bild Lilli continue production of their dolls. What the German public and the North American public want in a 12/30 cm fashion doll, doesn't always match up.

I think people will never be happy. I think a lot of people mistake finding something to always be upset about as a way of sounding intelligent and to seem a hero to a lot of people who actually disagree with them. I grew up playing with Barbie and had a plethora of them. Barbie taught me to take pride in myself, strive for excellence, and keep my appearance tidy and pleasing. I believe all those things used to be known as self-respect. All those who werent fans of the doll would simply walk past her in the toy aisles and do their own thing. No problem to be made. To each their own, I guess.

What's wrong with the computer engineer barbie? People ask for help and co-operate on projects all the time in the workplace. also video game design requires coding. Games use C#, Python, Lua, etc. I made a racing game in Kodu Game Lab and the first time I ran the game it was boring and had a basic map, actually making the game fun and look good was hard work. A video game developer has to make sure the game runs properly and in the correct sequence, patch glitches, fix bugs, and implement game features recommended by the players.

The teen talk barbie thing has me confused. They say that the BARBIE teen talk dolls were encouraging the teenage girl stereotype when it's obviously true. Everyone loves shopping, and people in poverty dream of going shopping for new clothes or for food or anything they need, whether male or female. I'm a girl and I love shopping and so do my male friends. But the 'will we ever have enough clothes' part was a bit over the top. they could have just asked to change the phrases.

I had number 6 and 5. Completely forgot about 5. I don't know how anyone had a problem with the girl scouts one. I don't think some of these were horrible. Some questionable in the retail sense, but understandable for coming of age. The weight loss one is probably the most infuriating. And as someone in computer science, the book says barbie needed help. CS majors ask all the time. We make mistakes. Not every barbie has to be strongly independent and refuses to ask for help.

Im 50/50 on the pregnant barbie. I dont agree with it but I dont not agree either. Im up in the air with that one. Do I think it glamorizes teen pregnancy? Not necessarily but I do agree that little girls dont need to be overly educated about pregnancy. No shame in little girls and boys being curious about when their mommy and daddy is having babies as long as its on an appropriate age level they can comprehend but all in all I dont think pregnant barbie is that bad

I'm a Computer Engineering student so let me add some information about our field. Computer Engineering is NOT programming. Computer Engineering is the intersection of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. We work with both hardware and software. We're the people that ensure your computer can boot up its OS when you physically turn it on, and that's only scratching the surface. Software Engineering is programming. Please stop saying this.

I think some of these suffered from adults reading things into toys that kids never would. Like, as a kid I had the pregnant Midge, and until I came across the controversy in my 20s, I had assumed she was an adult. On the other hand, I also understand the concerns with other, like the Oreo Barbies and the Computer Engineer book. Yikes!

A game designer is so much harder to find than a programmer. A game designer is like a director of a movie while a programmer is more akin to someone who light the shots or sets up cameras. I miss the days when people who worked in news cared about the truth and didn't only seek to be alarmist.

Funny. the adults had the issue but the kids did not. I personally, looooved my first doll: the Kissing Christie Barbie. I like putting the lipstick on her. My thoughts never went beyond that because I was a little girl and not mentally mature to even think anything else!

So most of these boil down to they didnt want them to look different. no tattoos, no puberty, no fishnets. Also Midge wasnt a teen so how did it promote teen pregnancy? Barbie was a grown $$ woman in most cases and Midge was not only a woman but married.

People were so overly sensitive with these. Like, there was nothing wrong with the girl scout Barbie, she was dressed as a girl scout nothing wrong with that. All of these Barbies looked fun, and I guess some people's childhood is ruined now.

Literally, only about 3-4 of these dolls are actually offensive. The rest of them fell under controversy because people were just looking for a reason to hate Barbie, especially with the Teen Talk one or the girls' scout one. #10 just baffles me.

I think the most scandalous one is Oreo Barbie, because of the derogative term itself, but the idea behind it is innocent enough.
This proves that audiences are hard to please and like complaining a lot.

It really just shows how important it is for companies to be diverse. If there had been just ONE black person in the room at Mattel when that Oreo Barbie came outthey could have told you that was a bad idea

I think the only thing that was actually bad is the one where she comes with a book about how to lose weight and the answer was dont eat with the scale that only goes up to 110.

8: 24 But math is hard. You tell kids to never lie and say the truth, but you mad at them for a plastic doll telling them the truth.

Math is hard I hate geometry and love trig. Again how is that worse than putting a scale in and a weight loss book in with a doll.

To be fair Black Canary Barbie wasn't aimed at kids. It was aimed at comic collectors, fans of Birds of Prey and gay men.
