Looking Back on the Best Halo Games

Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
Halo 5 just came out, so we decided to take the opportunity to look at the history of the series. From 2001's original to 343 Industries' first stab at the formula in Halo 4, we relate our favorite - that is, the best - games in the franchise. Footage from this video courtesy of World of Longplays - - specifically Longplayer Spazboi4. World of Longplays Patreon is located at

Multiplayer:
1: Halo 5 (Sprint was nerfed, multiple gametypes suited different sides of Halo)
2: Halo Reach (Incredible Forge, great split screen, well balanced maps)
3: Halo Online/Halo 3 (Halo Online brings great mods, a fantastic community to an already super balanced and fun game while trimming out the balance breaking equipment)
4: Halo 1 (Simmered the fantastic arena shooter formula from Unreal and Quake down to a slower consolized experience that was a blast in a good LAN)
5: Halo 2 (Great ranking but broke from the balanced arena formula of Halo 1 and focused too much on map control in my opinion)
6: Halo 4 (Sprint broke it for me)
Single Player:
1: Halo Reach (Fantastic emotional campaign that felt like a greatest hits compilation of the first 3 games)
2: Halo 1 (Partially due to nostalgia, I'll never forget what it was like to crash land on the ring for the first time and the sense of mystery, though it did start to get rather repetitive toward the end. Co-op fixes most of the issues of the game)
3: Halo 4 (Incredible new enemy designs that challenged how I played, good co-op, beautiful setting and an interesting and more personal story with huge steps up in voice acting)
4: Halo 2 (Though it didn't finish the fight, the levels were interesting and the arbiter sections fleshed out the story)
5: Halo 3 (Though it was the epic conclusion, it felt too similar to other shooters with its largely earth based setting and some of the most tedious flood levels this side of the Library)
6: Halo 5 (Halo 5 tried to do some interesting things with the story, but it came off more as overwritten fan fiction, a big disappointment after Halo 4. The co-op is also fantastic, but the removal of split screen completely killed the concept of -Halo Night- for me and drove me to play Halo Online more)
As for the spin offs, I love Halo ODST for what it is, but it truly is just an expansion for halo 3 and felt too much like a mix of Call of Duty and Metroid Prime in the nighttime sections. Halo Wars does a great job of adapting this great FPS franchise to the genre that it was originally built for. It is incredible that such a good RTS exists on a console, and gives an interesting look at the spark of the human covenant war. The Spartan Arcade Shooters are okay, though they felt like mild cash ins, especially with the lack of a true official Halo game on PC.
As a final thought, everyone should go and play Halo Online if you have any kind of decent PC. Sincerely, a long time Halo Fan that loves some Halo 3 style modded action =)

-Halo combat evolved-
Halo ce is one of my favorites, it had a simple but good story with amazing characters, The maps are a bit repetitive but nothing game breaking, for it's time the graphics were amazing 8. 5/10
-Halo 2-
My favorite halo game up to date, I like how it focused on the covenant as well as the humans, the story wasn't the greatest but it wasn't the worst either, the characters were amazing and the graphics were amazing for it's time 9. 5/10
-Halo 3-
Halo 3 for me was the end of halo, it was an amazing game with a brilliant story(exept for the end) the maps were amazing and so were the characters we also saw the end of some of the character we grew to love, I don't know what else to say about it else then brilliant 9/10

. My expectations get too unrealistically high. But I realize Halo 5 is an incredible entry to the series, and not too many people pinpoint its positives, which are frequent. I'm not EVER gonna hype myself up, because I'm setting myself up for petty anger. I love Halo 5 so much. The game is amazing. It's so awesome how I can turn my opinion around like that, but I did. Brian Reed did a great job to me. Not every story has to be as personal as Halo 4 was. I won't be going to the fan community to form my opinion. From now on forever, I will only form MY own opinion. In my opinion, Halo 5 struck gold for me.

Halo 3 was absolute top, and I love the couch multiplayer in Halo CE and Halo 2, but there's something really amazing about Halo Reach. For one, we're not only playing as Noble 6, we're playing us. Our Spartans that we customize and use as our avatars for the campaign and online community. It was also the last time we could play Elites (unfortunately only in specific games types) but it felt a grand finale from bungie's hand at Halo before giving it to 343. The maps were great, loved the custom maps made by the fans, and the rewards for ranking up felt like they were worth it. I think Halo 3 and Reach are tied for my favorites.

Man I love the way you did this video and brought your emotions into it. However you barely talked about Halo 2 which in my opinion was not only the best halo game of the series but the most important video game for the future of XBOX live. That game was so revolutionary in terms of growing the community and for many people it was there first Halo game and FPS. It came with the release of xbox live and it was 100% the glory days of xbox live. As much as I would love to write an essay about it I will restrain myself. I think you did not give it anywhere near as much credit though.

I was on board until he said Halo 4 -does not feel like some strange other company made it, Master Chief feels like Master Chief, Cortana feels like Cortana. -
Of course, this is my opinion but in Halo 4, Master Chief felt too pensive and self-loathing instead of being the strong silent type we all know. Cortana was whiny and unlikeable, instead of being the confident, intelligent one. The story and gameplay were very forgettable for me and super bland.
Again, just my opinion but the ratings, reviews and sales seem to prove my point.

Halo: CE was my first fps too and i feel the same way about it, but i feel like my favourite halo game for the story and the gameplay within the campaign is actually Halo 2. I feel like it had the most challenging campaign and found the most replay value within that. For online competitive play it had to be halo3. i think i played that for well over a few years, but im really looking forward to Halo 5's multiplayer it looks amazing (still havent played it although it is sitting on my xbox downloaded): c

1 and 2 were fun but I didn't play them much in there glory days so I can't say a lot, 3 was my first Xbox 360 game on my first Microsoft console and my first online shooter experience and it holds a special place in my heart. Reach is one of the best shooters I've ever played. 4 was a noble attempt by a new dev that I personally think it almost got it but still missed it. 5 thoughts multiplayer gets it but it's single player is sorta a hit or miss. Well that's me and halo for you lol
reply

I actually really loved ODST. The story was pretty simplistic which gave it more of a vibe that it was building off of halo 3 rather than creating something revolutionary, which I commend. Also, I think it has the best soundtrack out of any halo game.

We can all argue about which game has the better campaign, multiplayer or forge. But the one thing we can not argue about is Marty O-Donnell-s masterfully created soundtracks. I still to this day hold Marty O-Donnell as my favourite composer.
reply

halo 3 fixed 2s niches, halo reach said goodbye to bungie, halo 4 was made from an impossible standing point in the story, halo 5 was straigt up built for combat, from merging abilities into one control scheme, now if we could

I love halo, its my favourite shooter series, unfortunately as a ps4 owner I'll not get to play 5 unless I lend an Xbox one or get one cheap down the line. hope you Xbox owners appreciate this amazing series
reply

Are you guys kidding me? Halo reach, and 2 were the absolute best. Halo 3 was missing a huuuge part of the matchmaking and halo 4 was so disappointing that I never wanted to see another 343 game ever again
reply

i really dig the style of the video. There is a nice flow, a symbiosis between music and the speech, especially at the start. Some of the cuts are a bit too abrupt, but otherwise it's pretty cool.

Honestly, i dont like the way halo 4 looks. 5: 30 just look, everything is too bright and ugly. imo reach had the best graphics. I think halo 4 should looked like the cutscenes of halo wars.

5. Halo: Reach (2010)

I think halo 3 had the best story mainly because it was the final end and the wrap up (until halo 4) and the memories and sadness at the end When important characters were gone now
reply

Your wrong 343 turned halo story to shit it makes no sense and it's not like the original halo games in my opinion halo 1 and 2 and 3 were the best 4 and 5 are just tooo different
reply

It's not often that I come across a commentary I completely agree with, especially from Polygon or other big sites. Great job in a short video explaining the high points of each game!
reply

Halo reach was the best, I've played them all and i would have to say the character customization in reach was just beautiful. Best memories were halo 2, and reach.
reply

halo reach is not the last halo game, the series is not finished yet there is halo 5 Guardians and Halo 5 ODST and much more games they haven't made yet.
reply

Great video! Can relate a lot. But even though master chief is so badass I'm not that attached as to get mad when we don't get to play as him.
reply

Halo 2 is definetly the best halo game in my opinion the story, soundtrack and characters were amazing. and also the online multiplayer.
