The Physical Magic (and Danger) of the HTC Vive

Ben Kuchera plays Waltz of the Wizard on the HTC Vive Pre This video demonstrates something else along with the ostensible topic-if immersive VR is going to work in today-s gaming landscape, with the significance of social aspects like streaming, sharing videos, etc, they NEED to find some way of creating an output stream that averages out small head movements. I-m sure when you-re actually immersed it-s totally unnoticeable (and indeed would be noticeable if it wasn-t following your motions with such fidelity, but for a third party watching it on a screen it-s incredibly disorienting and not fun to look at.\r\n

They actually have a warning now about this on the HTC Vive manual, saying that you shouldn't try to sit or rest on virtual environments.
They also suggested to the devs to not include chairs or similar objects to avoid people trying to sit on them.
It's hilarous, but I guess that once you spend some time with VR you get used to it and don't fall for it again.

Having used my Vive for almost a month now, this is not an issue. If you don't have the presence of mind to not drop controllers, use the straps. Problem solved. I haven't ever tried to lean on something that isn't there, but I am reluctant to walk through a virtual wall or table. Along with the chaperone system, it's all very safe and I haven't broken anything.

This is like, so strange I never would of thought this could a problem. The fact that the distortion you get between the physical world and the virtual world can make something like accidentally falling over because of a fake table into something way worse.

Do the controllers not have Wii style straps on them to avoid dropping them?
The accidentally falling because you leaned on something is going to be interesting with how the Vive is designed to be a walk around VR experience though.

He's not kidding. It's easy to forget that the table is not real. I got to try it last night (thank Ben) and even though he warned me, I tried to lean on the table at one point to free myself from the cables beneath me.

Reminds me of astronauts dropping things after they come back from space because in their head they still have the instinc that things won't fall down if you release them in the air.
reply

I don't know if this is a thing. but there should be a button on the controller that switches from the VR to an outward camera on the headset
reply

LAWSUIT! lol I'm kidding but I'm not. you watch, some idiot will fall out a window or something and ruin it for everybody. Just wait. :-(

A game like this, simply place an empty cardboard box where the virtual table is. Problem solved and maximum immersion.

Im gonna tape on ropes that i gonna have on my wrists, like the nintendo wii controllers!
NOT gonna drop this!

reply

This is actually a hilarious problem, dangers aside. Although I'd probably play with a real table in front of me.

It's too bad the controllers don't come with some kind of strap, so you can't drop them. Oh wait. They do.
