Gameplay looks fast and fun. Gun sounds however are super weak, they just don't have a feel to it. Sounds more like water sprinklers. I feel like music is not aggressive enough to fit whats on the screen too. Enemy design is also very plain and boring, zombies sure were common enemies in shooters of past but it's not an excuse to put something overused and boring into the game. This looks like a gameplay from shooters of 1999 to 2004 years. It definitely has a quake feel to it but i'd argue there is more feel of painkiller to it. Overall i'd say it's worth your time if you liked oldschool shooters.

I get that they were trying to get a Quake-like look, but this doesn't look appealing at all. When you include blocky models with blocky textures but with a HD resolution, you can't blame people for comparing this to Minecraft. There are examples of simple aesthesics that look good (Superhot, for example, but this looks. lazy. One example of game that does a 90's aesthetic well (while being beautiful and visually unique) is Devil Daggers.

I know they're going for a retro look but there's a fine line between retro-looking and lazy. You can use the minimalist style but it has to stand out in some way. Shovel Knight wasn't just great because it looked old; it's gameplay was top-notch.
Right now Strafe looks like an upscaled PS1 game.

Looks neat, but my money is on Dusk being the greater game. I especially love the ripped straight from a N64 style to the textures. Looks to have a darker atmosphere then this as well. I'll be trying both though because I love retro style shooters, Doom 2016 was a godsend in that department.

It needs some heavier soundtrack. That music sounds like some anime opening OST without vocals (dont get me wrong, I like anime but it just doesn't fit here. They should have get Andrew Hulshult to make OST.
P. S. English isn't my native tongue, so if there are some mistakes then I apologize.

Just get brutal doom. this game is horrible, the guns lack punch, enemys dont have footsteps, enemys also have very little AI and will just charge at you, and the machine gun needs its spread decreased as this is a classic fps. not call of duty or csgo
reply

Hope there is more enemy variety as the game progresses. And I wish they did something to differentiate the look of the weapons. They all look similar. Why do they all have to look white with little changes in shape?
reply

I really want to like this game, but it's just a bastard representation of what people think 90s shooters were all about. And if you ask me, randomly generated layouts for this genre is a cop-out.
reply

I know this video is old and the game is almost out but I think that the lack of gun volume was due to Polygon turning it down, because other gameplay from around the same time was much better.
reply

Weapons are horribly, off-puttingly weightless. In a game like this, the only thing that matters is the feel of the shooting, if that sucks then what's the point? Here's hoping they fix it
reply

This will actually be a good game.
Also I don't really get all the negative comments by kids. The guy playing this is a pretty good player, better than most that are commenting in here.

Honestly, the I wish the music was more -edgy 90's metal- that early FPSs had than -WHOAH REMEMBER KUNG FURY? ITS THE 80s BRO! -
I think I have 80-retro fatigue, honestly.

reply

a lot of plp say how the sound sux, but for a game that's recreating the 1990 it might be ok for it to sound that way. ur expecting 2016 hi quality audio when its a 90's genre.
reply

where it says press e to rip off head, i think that should be moved to bottom middle, i didnt even notice it for quite a while up there and i think many others wont either
reply

Given the way reloading works, you were not using your ammo well at all. You reloaded every chance you got, but this wasted precious bullets that hadn't been fired.
reply

Minecraft colors and graphics, NERF looking weapons and more pixel art? Just because its got some ketchup and health pickups doesn't make it a -'90s fps homage -.
reply

The pixelization is so high, you can barely tell enemies from background objects. At least give them a contour, if you want them to look this low-res.
reply

I would agree that having some crunchier sounding guns would be nice, but it's not a deal breaker for me. I will most certainly be playing this.
reply

Damn, killer gore, environments, music, and more gore. Count me in. I do agree however, there's something missing in the impact department.
reply

Sounds to me like the sound mix is bad. Not because of the game, but the video. The trailers for this game sound totally different.
reply

You don't retain ammo from a clip when you reload, so when you're reloading with 9 bullets still in the clip, boom, there goes 9 bullets.

played 2015 version of STRAFE, there was only one lvl. is that a chance to find this 666 build anywhere?
