So this is pretty much the Freestyle mode on RB4, but that's the whole game? I guess it could be fun for five minutes for someone who just wants to spam notes on a plastic guitar along to their favorite songs, but this doesn't look like something I'd ever buy. I'm a long-time fan of the series, but the direction it's been taking since RB4 was announced has really underwhelmed me. I enjoy the challenging beat-matching bits of the game (a lot of the metal DLC is really fun for me to play, for example, but the focus on freestyle solos and appealing to party players really leaves a lot to be desired for my own sake.
Oh well, at least RB3 still exists, and has a lot more to offer.

Hey Nick, I still don't think I really got how this plays compared to old school GH/RB. I can see there are what look to be a single color at a time on the fret (are those the same through the song or something) and still chords to get right, but is the rhythm just whatever? You're Mr. AAA on Heavy for DDR, so I don't know just how hard this is to do for a rhythm game! Also, I still haven't actually put on a VR headset yet. How much of a learning curve is that?
Lots of things have shown me how cool VR can be, but this one was palpable, because we've all had the prior experience just without the goggles. I'm excited!

reply

I wish I had a VR system since this looks so amazing! I still play RB time and time again, and it's the visuals and music that gets me doing -one more song (tm)- till the morning.
People might bag on rhythm games since it's not -real- instruments, but that's not the point of it all. The point is the experience that comes with music and getting to interact with it. especially for peeps that love it, but can't even contribute themselfs.

Can you imagine the possibilities though? This is genius. Imagine you meet up with 3 other people around the world, actually write a song, then multiplayer play it live. Or just play a cover. People can drop in and listen along with the AI. We could have metaverse pop stars and rock bands. That blows my mind. Imagine VR music festivals. on the MOON! hahaha. Story mod could be you in a rock band and your rise to the top.
reply

I don't get it. Watching the old games it was extremely easy to tell what the game was expecting you to do and then see the player doing just that. Here, I have no clue. That's not exactly great for getting people to buy into this game through the likes of gameplay videos. Possibly a bad thing right out the gate. Now, I'm not saying the game isn't fun, it could be amazing, but I just really can't tell.

I'm looking forward to more music games. I wonder if the guitar is mandatory for the game, suppose it will be.
Quick question: Isn't not being able to see your hands in the game going to be a little bit of an immersion-knocking problem? I mean, once we're used to Touch, I suspect that will become a standard pretty quickly. Has anyone played it first hand and can comment?

reply

I played the balls off of Rock Bands one through three, and this is the first time I've actually wanted a VR game. This is such a different approach from the other games, it looks like it favors experimentation and creativity more than precision like the others. I feel like I have to play it to see if it's actually fun, but wow it looks interesting.

This seems ridiculously easy with too little potential for complicated or demanding sequences. If they tried to implement complicated sequences I don't see how they could even do it. Yet another vr game ruined by trying to oversimplify it because it's vr. -They don't want to looose it's just vr you can't lose in vr- >: -

I'd love for either a direct port of Rockband or Guitar Hero III to VR, with visual improvements and first person perspective and the notes coming towards you similar to Beat Saber. I mean a new track of songs would be cool too but the lineup of songs in Guitar Hero III and Rockband are really, really good.
reply

Where's the track? Like the VR idea, but without a track you should be following. no. Always having to look down at the neck of your guitar. no. Having a track in the view that could be adjusted for size. much better idea, IMO. Otherwise all you're doing is just abusing a piece of plastic.

it's hard to judge from watching. but I don't think the actual rhythm game system looks very fun or good for more than a few hours total. I think I'd prefer the typical notes-streaming-toward-you visual just overlayed as semi transparent and kept semi-centered on the screen or something.
reply

Even after watching the tutorial it seems a /little/ confusing- but I imagine it'd be easier if I was doing it in person.
Still, this isn't what I expected from a VR Rock Band, and it looks really, really cool. Excited to see how this ends up.

reply

tbh i would have preferred the original gameplay, with the highway sort of attached to the bottom of your perspective. i mean this is cool and all, but it's not really much of a -game-. i don't like the freestyle stuff much.
reply

so basically you play the game in freestyle mode which was the biggest pile of shit!
I'd actually think this was awesome IF you could actually play the songs properly with the track and that

reply

LOOK UP. Guy demoing this ruins the whole thing, typical Polygon terrible video game players. LOOK AT THE NOTE CHART AND SHOW US IT. WE CANT SEE THE GAME.
Its just a guy staring at his guitar.

reply

no drums = noo sale. Rockband slept while rocksmith took over. good luck getting it back if you dont get it right.
wow watched more on this and the whole thing is trash.

reply

This is super interesting. I was really expecting a lane highway over the crowd, putting cues on the controller was unexpected but I guess it makes sense. Really want to play this.
reply

Looks pretty awesome! Would love a non-VR version so I can play without spending a couple hundred bucks. ;P
Oh--and looking forward to a vlog review thing of this experience.

reply

so is it realistic, like I play on the stage, and i hear no shit coz the guy at the keyboard is shit, then i get a sudden boost in bass and my ear just dies? XDD
reply

That's cool to show off for a few minutes but I thought you would actually be able to play the game. Though I guess that wouldn't make sense in VR
reply

Highway or not, this game is sick! I LOVE IT. But I can't afford it. I don't even have a VR headset or something where I can play VR games. :(
reply

As someone who loves Rockband/Guitar Hero and has beaten pretty much every song in every game on Expert, this looks like garbage. : /
reply

does this gameplay make any sense to anyone? how do you know what buttons to press without seeing the usual guitar neck going down your throat?
reply

would be nice if we saw both guitar notes and screen notes like a normal rock band games in a TV or Big Screen inside the game.
reply

Yes this have potential, but we dont want freestyle, we want to play the music with our guitar like we are the guitarist.
reply

That's actually really cool. I love how the sounds change when you are in front or to the side of the monitor.
