In a world without live concerts, video games have stepped in to fill the void. But will it change things for good? Let's look at how groups like Anamanaguchi and artists Travis Scott and Lil Nas X have used video games like Fortnite, Minecraft, and Roblox as venues

-_small brain: _- fortnite is the future? no way! that game'll be dead in a few years and its developer is literally an evil corporation
-_galaxy brain: _- they aren't talking about fortnite concerts, they're talking about virtual concerts that happen in massively-multiplayer online games, of which the most famous are the ones that happen in fortnite. YOU HAVE REVEALED YOUR INABILITY TO PERFORM HIGH-LAYER ABSTRACT PATTERN-RECOGNITION TO US ALL, AND YOU ARE PROUD OF IT?

I hope immersive concerts thru video games and VR become more of a thing. I HATE TRYNA GET GOOD SEATS TO A LIVE SHOW, ONLY TO LOSE IT TO F----ING SCALPERS! I'm also kind of an introvert, who rarely has any friends or family that share the same music interests as I do, so getting to experience a concert without leaving my house would be AWESOME!
This was a really informative video, thanks Josh!

Maybe I'm just weird but I always thought the appeal of live performances was being in the same room as them? And some of these are prerecorded so you don't even get the live aspect either. I'm always for more accessibility, and really there isn't exactly another option in quarantine, but these just seem. empty? This is a great video though!

AJR did an amazing virtual concert at the end of last year, and as someone living in a city outside the US where we don't get a lot of big name shows (or smaller names, specially international ones) i really hope that this trend remains even after the pandemic ends!

AS A HUGE ANAMANAGUCHI FAN THIS IS SUPER SURREAL TO SEE! it-s wild that these small venues like nether meant and square garden are getting recognition from something as high scale as polygon. i-m looking forward to more josh videos in the future!

Dude, this is such a fascinating topic. I'm not really a fan of Travis Scott but when I heard that concert happened I remember feeling like videogames as a medium were pushed forward that day. The possibilities really are endless. Brilliant!

I think there are certainly some interesting things about this step for concerts, but for me, a concert is about the energy of being in the space with the artist, which is why I also have never dug the arena style seating.

-imagine being able to possess Matt Flynn's body during Harder to Breathe. Imagine that drum audio getting louder and louder while you're trying to keep the band on tempo. -
You're literally describing Rock Band.

I was not expecting Josh to be a Maroon 5 fan. Idk. just wasn't expecting it lol. Loved the video Josh! Can't wait to see all the videos you'll make as part of the team!

I went to two Minecraft concerts this year and, especially as a disabled person, they were some of the most positive concert experiences I've ever been a part of.

So from all I-ve seen, their replacement for the social interaction missing in online spaces. is get everyone to do their fortnight dances together. Ughhhhhhhh

I think that, in the unlikely event it's ever safe again, it would be neat to see artists go on tour, but include -virtual dates- within. Best of both, right?
reply

you know what might make a good video, is if you compared the geneva convention and other warfare laws and applied it to something like Fire Emblem.

I enjoy the concerts when playing phantasy star online, I had no idea other games do that too, I think its a great idea. Anamanaguchi are awesome too.

hot take: recorded music is consistently better than physical venues, and also live performances necessarily lack the polish of recordings

Have I totally lost track of time, or is this Josh's second video this week? Great content, hope to see more, please don't burn out! :D
reply

thank you for this! i really hope more artists invest on building immersive environments for newer and stranger experiences on VR. aaaaaa

greatly reminded of concerts held in pso2 and how it was so hype it got its own stage setting in a song made about online gaming.

But what about for music fans older than the age of 23? Where's virtual concerts in dark souls? Kids don't let me on fortnite
reply

Sweaty pit dude why would I want to feel like I-m listening to a cd in a stadium rather than the energy of an intimate room!
reply

i saw ajr's online performance on boxing day and it was WILD, but weird not to hear people shouting along with the lyrics

Second Life had this going on to a smaller extent years ago, many years ago. It still does but the platform's ancient.

I hate this entire concept and anybody who likes it doesn't really Get the great aspects of the live music experience
reply

I thought the whole point of going to concerts was to be around the musicians? Huh. This was very interesting: )

Folding idea's video on fortnite concerts is a great followup vid if you're interested in exploring this idea

This reminded me I still have two tickets for an Anamanaguchi concert that couldn-t happen. maybe one day; -;
