Martial artist and legendary action filmmaker Scott Adkins breaks down the choreography and camerawork of some of our favorite video game action scenes. We showed him Mortal Kombat 11, Yakuza Kiwami 2, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, and Metal Gear Solid 4

I'm sure your time with Scott was limited, but his comment regarding 'crossing the line' and it being 'confusing' very well could be deliberate in MGS4. It would have been interesting for you to mention to him that, in a lot of ways, those two characters 'are the same person. ' Not that a lot of MGS' lore makes much sense at either a high or a low level, but in terms of symbolism and that particular scene we're being shown that both of those characters are in a lot of ways nothing more than fighting and their rivalry. and they -have the same genes. -
Not trying to defend the technical integrity of MGS4, just trying to say they might have broken that (general filmmaking) rule on purpose.

The title: -We evaluate fake fights with a real martial artist! -
The video: an interview with an actor who's never had a full contact bout in their life.
Every time. That's not a rip on Scott, no flipping way should be be risking his venerable career by putting his face and body on the line in an uncontrolled environment, but we're more than two decades removed from the first popular televising of real fights and the public is still using the term -martial artist- to describe styles and people that can't actually teach you to fight.

The thing about -crossing the line- was SO VALIDATING to me because all my friends love action movies, but I get confused and can't follow what's happening, ESPECIALLY when the characters look remotely similar or are wearing similar clothes. I just. Fight scenes are so often just kind of a blur and I don't really know what's happening. (It's also just hard for me to process quickly changing visual stimuli in general -- it ends up being interpreted as visual -noise-)

fun fact: in film terminology crossing the line as I learned it is called the 180 degree rule, in that when two people are talking imagine a line connecting the two people and the camera should never cross that line, even when the people move around and the line is changing position, between cuts the camera will almost always stay on the same side of the line. If it breaks this it's jarring and confusing to the viewer and that little hiccup will break your immersion

The thumbnail had Scott Adkins in it and I literally couldn't remember who that was, but the little hover video preview had Kiryu Kazuma in it. THAT'S a lad I recognize.
I apparently don't have the attention span to sit down and retain knowledge of any action movie released in the past 20 years, but I CAN sit down and spend a couple hundred hours with my friend Kiryu.

I love this kind of video where the expert enthusiastically talks in depth about a specific aspect that might seem small but they put a lot of work and love into. Reminds me of those hours-long LOTR bts bonus specials or even The Good Place podcast when they hosted different cast and crew to talk about set design, costuming, props, etc. Thanks, Polygon!

Scott Adkins wants to join MK movie. Really hope he is in the movie as an actor also as an action director too. because the fight scenes in the MK movie still not good enough, sometimes it's too hard to see the choreography because the camera shoot too close to the characters when they are fighting and sometimes the camera shake too much.

Okay but if you show Yakuza show Kiryu dropkicking someone out of a window so hard he has to catch himself on the windowframe or that one scene in the sewer where the guy on the motorcycle beats him with a pipe and he takes it to the forearms.
Yakuza has some real WEIRD action scenes.

Excellent video as always Pat! And SCOTT ADKINS, my MAN. The dude is a legend. Insane physicality and talent. I watch his scene with Andrei Arlovsky in US: Day of Reckoning on the reg. Dude is an absolute beast and a class act. So stoked to see him get more and more recognition.

I love that martial artists and choreographers reacting to fighting scenes has been coming such a thing, and y'all come late to the party with frickin' Scott Adkins. Especially after Corridor Crew has been talking about wanting him on. What a flex. I love it.

As a casual, local dojo martial artist who occasionally enters local sparring tournaments, I've really enjoyed some of Scott's video breakdowns in the past. It was a pleasant surprise to see him cross over into my video game world. Love the video.

i think all the crossing of the line in the snake/liquid snake scene is intentional, to create confusion about their identities. thats. i mean that is what the fight's about, right? it's supposed to make it hard to keep track of who is who
reply

Hmm, what Scott said about jumping the line is something I never really noticed consciously but yeah, I don't like it when they do that, because my mind has to reposition the fighters, and it takes away from the immersion of the fight.

I watched a really weird movie just called Ninja. It came on TV around 3am so yeah. They used martial artists instead of trained actors and even though the acting and story were real shite the fight scenes were actually very good.

From my opinion in the chorigraphic fights I would make more unsuccessful movements such as blows that are not successful and falls that were not expected I think that would give it more realism

Every Pat video is a joy. His love for the subject matter is visible in every frame, and I wind up just as excited and engaged, even if the subject is something I know nothing about.

Pat is really great at choosing the materials he brings to his interviews. Each fight scene brought something new to the table

As someone that has fought Scott Adkins on-screen and made some live-action Yakuza stuff, from 3: 03 made me very happy. Nice work.

If this clip doesn't feature Fight Night then I'll be pissed! It's the most authentic sports game ever made!
reply

I've never looked into WWE stuff, but Pat always manages to get me interested in it in these kind of videos!
