Today on Overboard, Polygon's board game show, we're playing HUES and CUES. It's a color-guessing game that tests everyone's knowledge of jeans. We're joined by Eater's Jaya Saxena, and cartoonist Mattie Lubchansky, for a chaotic and colorful guessing game. Seeing 'oatmilk blueberry' being nothing at all like the revealed colour was infuriating lol. Oatmilk, they were close, the palest yellow on the board, but blueberry came out of nowhere, and if combining those, I'd have assumed a kind of milkshake, and blueberry juice is a reddish hue rather than blue, so the warmth of the yellowed milk too would point it to a reddish blue tone, not just a light blue as revealed. Half this game really is just trying to think like the other person.

Polygon, just letting you guys know that the subtitles are awful on this video. They're not timed well, are punctuated confusingly, and most annoyingly they write Hues and Cues differently every time someone says either word.
Would you be able to fix this because parsing these out is a real challenge and the first round hasn't even started for me

The craziest thing to me is everyone agreed the clue bus means yellow. I would've thought of blue first, but on the other hand I think bus would be a pretty bad clue since there's so many things it could be. That said I'm not American so I've never seen a yellow school bus (or a school bus in general.

love when Overboard does a game I've actually played! I think I've been in a round where literally that exact same 'Barbie' c(l)ue has been given hahaha. also i can't believe Pat's told this corduroy pisspant story multiple times on the internet where everyone can see it skdagjl
reply

everyone got so funky and silly as soon as jeans was said, i truly could not stop giggling. and then my first day of kindergarten i pissed my pants because i didn't know you're allowed to go to the bathroom -- what is it about jean talk that makes everyone so wacky!

The creators really need to update the game where the colors on the cards look exactly like on the board by adding adjacent colors next to them. They forget how colors beside a color can affect how we see a color.

Hues and Cues videos drive me nuts because I see everyone agree that a certain color is violet when it's the bluest blue that's ever blued. I'm sure it's truly violet in person but never in videos.

ngl I’ve seen this game and I didn’t get the appeal but this video kinda sold me. I didn’t recognize how vital arguing would be the the gameplay, I would love to argue about some colors

23: 04 this one helped exactly 0% royalty could definitely go a few different ways (royal blue and deep purple mainly but also gold is viable, but I have never heard of an ube milkshake before.

My favorite game is trivia pursuit and I once dated a guy whose nostrils were perfectly shaped for the pie pieces. It was incredibly distracting. I only wish I had tried putting them up there.

Dawg. y'all need to color grade if you got a camera facing right at the game board, because those shots look WRONG all over, but they look right in the far away shots of the board.

One of the tough parts of this game is sometimes the card colours look different to the board colours, and I feel like that might have happened with jeans in a big way

I'm sorry but the moment at 29: 48 where Mattie says clue and then can we cut that and then after there's a cut animation is so wildly funny great job editor

I'm so, so happy the Hey Arnold clip got played after they mentioned mauve, lol. It's the singular thing in my life that I know that references that color.

me not realizing that she was joking when she said that basketball was invented in the nineties because it actually was.
sorry I know centuries are weird

I've been interested in this game lately and was so excited to see this pop up! Seems really fun. Thanks for the great overboard ep. I love these!

This seems like an extremely good game and also an extremely good demonstration of the limitations of color cameras and digital displays lol
reply

sorry but im never, ever going to stop thinking about the phrase everyone close all your eyes. its just. im never going to forget

Petition for Polygon staff to begin referring to Patrick as Corduroy Pisspants in perpetuity. (I would also accept Patrick Pisspants)
reply

Is there supposed to be an extra 1 in the top and bottom rows of the scoring frame graphic 1: 54 Because that's weird if yes.
