Wild Boar Who Couldn’t Move For A Week Demands Belly Rubs Now Comeback Kids Kind intentions but I’m not sure rescuing feral pigs is the right thing to do in Hawai’i. They are a major cause of the destruction of our native rainforests, contributing to erosion which damages our reefs, and the spread of mosquitos that carry avian flu killing our endangered native birds; as well as spreading many invasive species deeper into the rainforest. They also carry leptospirosis and other diseases dangerous to humans and other animal species, and infect our watersheds. I understand it’s not kind to be critical, but we are the endangered species capital of the world. The State is in a lot of trouble for noncompliance with the Endangered Species Act and struggling to conform. One of our primary issues is the need to eradicate feral pigs. These are not the domesticated pigs Polynesians brought to the islands (which were kept under control to prevent them from being destructive to the agricultural systems. These were brought to the islands by Captain Cook and are a very harmful species of pig. We need our hunters to help and we are working on a humane eradication program to manage the populations. Feral pigs also are a danger to our agriculture and livestock, industries we need for self-sufficiency that are struggling to thrive. So unfortunately, while a sweet story and I have compassion and kindness, it would be best if this pig had been euthanized. I’m sorry to say that but we have to be responsible in how we manage our land and resources and it is a major contradiction to save feral pigs. It is like saving mice on a farm. If one mice gets into a winter store of hay and fouls it, all the horses and cattle will get sick, colic can kill them. So a lesser harm to prevent greater harms is to control mice. Pigs also. It is devastating how many native species are endangered in Hawai’i. We have already lost so many to extinction. And this is a rare and special isolated place in the world with endemic species that exist nowhere other than here. So with kindness and appreciation for this rescuer’s compassion I have to say please do not rescue feral pigs. It is irresponsible. I understand this pig is domesticated and was treated by a vet and is no danger. But in principal, our resources should be going to save our endangered species, not overpopulated invasive pigs. He’s still a lucky pig of course. But in the context of the problems we have in these islands it would be best not to promote rescuing feral pigs. Or coming into contact with them. You can get very sick. Our hunters are who I respect and appreciate the most. They are helpful to the problem. If others find wounded or injured pigs, I would contact the DLNR, not a rescue shelter. It’s a wildlife management problem, not a domesticated farm animal that needs refuge. Sorry to have to be the one to say it, but it can be harmful to promote this kind of positivity. I often hear hippies talking about the horses and feral pigs all living in harmony under the out in the pasture. Unfortunately it is ignorant bliss. The ignorant sees happy cows and horses and pigs. I see dead horses and cows who were infected by feral animals. I would call a hunter to eradicate them for me. The truth is not always pleasant and often the right thing to do, is the hard right thing. What makes us feel good is not always what is actually best. Aloha and take good care. No mean intentions on my part, just great care and concern for our watersheds and native and endemic species.

The reason no one wanted to help her is because these boars are an invasive species that destroy and decimate all the wildlife around them. Add to that, it’s near impossible to control their population with legalized hunting and even poison.
That said, nothing terrible happened here since they placed him into a sanctuary.

He tripled in size after they helped him! they rebuilt his will to live too when they found him and fed him, it brought out his energy and courage when he realized there was no danger. This is a total wild boar who acts domesticated. He now gets the best of both worlds. Good folks thank god for her

All injured or sick animals, should be taken to a veterinary clinic as soon as possible for a full check -op including bold tests, x-rays, etc. The animal cold be lame and sickly looking for a number of reasons and the correct treatment can be given only after a full check - up.

Pigs are crazy. If you leave them in the wild they grow tusks, and as you can see with Paxton his tusks disappeared after being in a domestic environment for a year. He also looks much more pig like as well (rather than boar.

The First Lady who stayed with the wild boar is an Angel. She stayed by him patiently my goodness! THey never did give a diagnosis for his leg, wonder what was wrong with it.
reply

So I guess there were no veterinarians where you live No animal husbandry groups Maybe a local rancher I thinks it's great (and very lucky) that the animal survived.
reply

What happened to his tusks Do they go away after he is less feral I have read that domesticated pigs can turn feral and grow tusks. Anyone know anything about this

Why weren't xrays taken to find out exactly what the problem was and if he was experiencing acute pain (if his limb was trembling, I am certain he WAS)

Imagine being a wild creature fearful of humans then one day having a human save you and others continuing to love and care for you.

The amount of love and care that you people give these animals is clearly the tonic that they need to survive and prosper.
