Raccoon Still Visits Her Favorite Human Years After She Was Released In The Wild Alright, unpopular opinion here, but if an animal you cared for keeps returning to you, you most certainly didnt do a good job caring for it. If a naturally wild animal is repeatedly returning to you, its because they deem you a constant and easier source of food than what theyd get being a normal wild animal, which means you didnt raise them properly. A properly raised wild animal should be one that never feels the need to come back to you. If you never see them again, you did a good job.
Notice how only one of these raccoons came back. She grew up with two others, and treated this lady like her mother. Mothers in the wild force their children to learn how to be a wild animal, show them how to forage or hunt for their food, then leave them to go into the world on their own. These raccoons dont go looking for their mom forever, they learn, and they adapt. A wild animal returning to you isnt a case of them loving you, its because you feed them, and provide them shelter. Why would they bother working for their food, when youre just going to feed them instead
Look at it this way: A baby is lost in the woods, its cared for by animals, and its life is saved. Then, when the baby grows, its found by humans, who take the kid in and bring them back to civilisation. Would you say that the kid then going back to the woods to find animals to feed it to be a good thing Of course not, youd want the kiddo to be raised by humans, not animals, so why do you not apply the same logic to other living creatures That raccoon isnt going back to her perceived mother because of a sense of love, shes going back because she knows that human will feed and protect her while she raises her young.

I hear ya my pops said he heard noises in the attic so I went up and put a flashlight and pane the light and saw 3 tiny raccoons no momma. The 3 we’re very friendly which was odd so left the ladder and all 3 came down and fed them and few days later they were climbing my pops as he had his morning coffee. Thankfully found someone in NJ and had a Raccoon rescue and other animals.

Sorry don’t want to be that guy but they don’t actually hibernate they will stay in a den for a no longer than a week or two but don’t hibernate. I use to hunt them here in Canada and would always get them in the winter in the snow. I no longer hunt but love all animals now

Humans are just animals that are capable of greed and hate. We are born with access to love and compassion, but many people choose to remain base animals and appeal to their base instincts. They would rather be predators because they consider compassion weakness.

I'm astonished at the ignorance. That anybody could be surprised that wild animals wish to be in the wild or that they get pregnant! Afraid that a wild animal wouldn't know how to raise her own offspring. LOL that is hilarious! But too ludicrous to watch.

You did all the right things! Leaving the trap door open was a smart decision because they were obviously needing some adventure at that point, but still wanting some reliability and safety of your home. Great critter momma you are! And thank you for sharing

I once had 2 baby raccoons who got out of our chicken coop building by crawling upside down up the ceiling rafters and up the ventilation pipe onto the roof. Later on we found them dead, stung to death by a bees nest they got into.

ya I get mine coming back year after year and their babies. they know a soft touch. Funny my neighbors ask why the critters stay out of my trash big secret. I feed them and it keep them heathy.

my racoon, came back years later, we had 2, one died, it came up snuffed a little becaue it had babies, and ate from my hand.
so cute, beware the bite, when young growing up sometimes, lol

Racoons are not pets, they are dangerous after they become sick, what ever they eat out in the wild, or city, like sick or dead animals can make them sick and obtain the virus you all know of.

Saved a raccoon and released it, 2 years later it’s in my backyard sitting on a swing set. He even comes up and says hello once in a while if we are sitting outside.

I don't see raccoons apart from the ones splattered on the motorway due to drivers not paying attention.

Imagine it they ever sell though. There is a raccoon at the door like hello. I wish to have a little snacky snack.

A wise man once said, If you love something set it free, if it comes back, it's yours. If not, it never was.

I read that female racoons return to where they were born to have their babies.
reply

As long as you live there this might end up in naturally domesticated raccoons

I wish my chickens had a safe place that raccoons can’t get in and eat them

Friendly raccoons apparently make the public nervous about rabies.
