German Shepherd Bomb Detection Dog Misses Her Job After Retirement Soulmates I handled and retired 2 explosive K9s. My experience was very similar. My first K9 had the same reaction and didnt accept my 2nd one when we came home. I solved by setting up finds in large open areas. How they would compete to be first on the find. It energized my retired girl and my young dog learned all the skills of the old master. Losing them both to age was like losing two children. How can you honor enough these beautiful creatures that saved your life and that of others. I am getting up in age myself and my little Frenchie pup and her constant antics and love help to keep away tears and the PTSD. Still, i would not go back and trade the job for any other. Best wishes and stay safe out there brother.

i just saw this video, i just adopted a bomb sniffing german shepherd, from Afghanistan, i really need to be able to do this with him but i do not know what to hid to help him, can you please get a hold of me so that i can help our new dog i know that he is having problems getting used to being retired and i would love for him to be able to play and find things, he does still smell all over the place and he is constantly looking so i was wondering what you hid so that she can find it and feel like she is being useful again thank you-

My GSD was never stationed, but having that working line inside her DNA I can relate. If we dont play fetch with her ball, she starts crying after getting anxious asf, if its raining then I HAVE TO start doing training drills at home with her, bite work, search, fetch, protection, etc, even if its 10 mins, she wags her tale and gets excited and gives me kisses like shes saying thank you! I needed this. Working breeds are no joke, they make you a better person. I love my girl.

I think retired K9s ought to have recreational facilities that mimic the job they used to do to keep their mind active & keep them from getting depressed.
A K9 has been trained & reared for the job, so when they retire, they have nothing to do. This guy has a brilliant idea which should expand to all owners who have retired K9s.
There is nothing worse than knowing that they're depressed

Wow I can relate ti this dog, I retired at 54 from 30 years of IT work thinking paradise was waiting and now 3 years later I rue the decision. Dont get me wrong its not all that bad but I feel useless, the only thing keeping me afloat are my 2 GSDs but I miss the job and life I was so sick of doing more than I ever imagined. Life.

Thank you for being a good partner/handler and give her job back. I have a retired K9 narcotics dog that was developing some aggression issues so I did something similar. We walk the Walmart parking lots and find things. Lots of praise lots of loving up and she has a purpose back.

Very beautiful dog. As long as she’s happy everyone else is happy too. Love my GSD she is a true member of the family I try and spend as much time as I can with her. Thank you for the post give her all the love you can

She reminds me of my sons 7 month old gsd. He loves her so much he sometimes sleeps in her cage with her. She is already protective of him and his younger brother. I am excited to show him this in the morning!

iTS tough, being trained as a bad ass. Jumping out of helicopters, sniffing bombs and bad guys, then told youre done, when u know you can still do it. Retirement is tough, dont believe the commercials

She was too young to retire. She loved doing what she did, and was not ready to stop. How many humans are like this My Mum is almost 70 and she is no where near ready to give up what she loves doing.

This is the perfect video to show people that call working dogs being abused. Dogs LOVE work, they NEED work. Very happy this beautiful girl can feel like herself again

Beautiful story, thank the both of you for your service. The love and bond between these two is plainly obvious. I wish I had a dog just like this one

Let’s say a bomb detection dog retires. If there ever is a bomb threat in your city or near it. Would you or could you bring the dog to help out

This veteran just walking around the hardware store hiding little tins full of gunpowder in all the appliances is too cute. What good doggie daddy.

You restored her sense of meaning in life and drew upon her previous strengths to integrate her into a new way of life. Bro, yes!

This cool dog might make a spectacular disease detection dog and contribute to this new-ish field and really help people.

German Sheppards are working dogs they just need work to do to be happy especially the high to mid energy ones.

Just like those old vets who cant adapt to civi life and only wanna go back to the suck
reply

You can take a dog away from his purpose, but you can't take the purpose out of the dog.
reply

They need purpose, or they are lost. Maybe a kitten or a puppy to fill her hours.
reply

She could not adapt, so you adapted to her. Good friend. Good partner. Good man.
reply

2: 47 All fun and games till she sits down in a place you didnt put the decoy XD

Working dogs, working people, never really lose the need for purpose in their life!

For everyone with a dog
