No One Could Catch this Giant Stray Great Pyrenees Until This is basically how my dad got his first family dog. My grandfather owned a small machine shop and started to notice this mostly hairless, skinny dog running by often. Clearly in terrible shape, but very fast and very nervous of people. This would have been 1960s I believe. He quickly realized he couldnt win her over with treats and get a leash on her, but there were a number of small businesses right around him and the other owners and workers got on board. They were able to trap her by leaving gates open with food inside and then closing the gate behind her and from there got her on a leash, in a car, and to a vet. She was an afghan, though she didnt look it since her hair had fallen out due to mange for god knows how long. And malnourished. The vet warned my grandfather, that while they could treat the mange, malnourishment, probably other parasites, she was in pretty dire shape from living like that so long. Anyway, they did it, all the treatment, my dad remembers wearing rubber gloves to help with the medicated baths. When the mange was gone, she grew back some hair but never full a full coat, but she was happy and comfortable. She lived a few years, I think she was older and also obviously a hard life, but at least her last few years were happy and comfortable and with love. And my grandfather fell in love with sighthounds, and there were many more in their house after her.

Pyrenees are really calm dogs, nothing much bothers them. We have 2 working Pyrenees and they are only ever agressive if they sense a coyote or other animal around, but they are great with kids, other animals and just a joy to be around. They even let our smaller dog jump around them, play with their tail and then when the playing is through the smaller dog sometimes falls asleep leaning up against him. I guess the smaller dog figures no safer place to be. Its funny because the Pyrenees tries not to disturn the sleeping smaller dog, even if that means he has to stay still for 20 min. They are really caring animals. a real joy.
If anyone is thinking of getting one realize they require heavy grooming. Since ours are working dogs we brush them out thoroughly once every week and every 2 or 3 months we call a pro to groom them depending on how scruffy they get. Treat them well and they will be your best friends, the loyalty they have is unbelievable.

I’m glad they are out there saving dogs. But I wish they would research the dog breeds before trying ti catch them if it doesn’t work. This dog is scared, yes. BUT he is a Great Pyrenees they like to roam to protect their flock. It’s in their breed. My Great Pyrenees doesn’t want to come in once he’s outside. After I researched more about his bread I realized a lot of people deal with the same thing. Maybe they could have found a different way to help him instead of trying a full week and risking him getting hit by a car or even attacked by other animals. Treats do not always work on this breed. They are very intelligent.
Nothing against them. I think what they are doing is fantastic. Just saying not all dogs are the same and if they knew more about certain breeds it could help them rescue dogs in a more sufficient way and understand them better.

Bless you for saving this handsome boy! I have a Rottweiler/Pyrenees puppy and he looks exactly like my pup's father. I also rescued a 4yr old Belgian Malinois in almost the same fashion as you saved this Pyrenees. Now her and my puppy are the absolute best of friends and a true blessing from God. I'm sure this guy's new owners are just ecstatic to have him. Pyrenees are amazing dogs. Loving, gentle, and great with kids. But God help anyone who tries to break into that house. Lol. My pup's father is 10 and still chases bears and mountain lions off his 30 acres in the woods every single night.

Beautiful dog in body and spirit. I found this when reading about the Great Pyrenees that attacked 11 coyotes to protect sheep. These dogs look so gentle but are fierce fighters, which makes it more amazing that he didn't bite anyone. THANK YOU for rescuing Miles. He reminds me of my rescue cream Golden Retriever. she didn't wag her tail for three days after I got her, but after 2. 5 years is fine with me, but still a bit skittish when meeting new people.

Imagine this same big white dog with a short brindle coat. I have a Pyreneese/Plott Hound mix, so he has short dark brindle hair, but otherwise looks and behave so much like this big boy, it's amazing. I am trying to understand his personality more.

Yeah that's not how you build trust. If they would just put food out eventually he will be curious as in who is doing this. Then he will come closer until one day he will approach. This is how I got ferril cats to become pets.

Its crazy that such a big dog was able to survive as a stray for a whole year I once met a stray pit bull in my backyard and he was such a good boy I later found out animal control killed him when i came back from school

Oh my god I can’t imagine why this dog doesn’t immediately fell in love with this cutie trying to save him. I mean if was the dog I would have been like: ok go ahead Ill follow if I can just be with you
reply

At least he was fed and looked fine on the street. I am sure the people around there was feeding him. This story is not like most on here where the dogs are starving and in bad shape.
reply

Wow, just imagine how much better the world would be if people had the compassion for other humans as they have for dogs. There are lots of people out there who need saving.

We had a Great Pyrenees mix (or perhaps a runt. He was a wonderful dog. He had the greatest personality and fell in love with everyone he met - humans, other dogs, cats.
