With 2016s Moana joining the lineup of Disney princesses, this key figure has come a long way since 1937s Snow White. Check out this video to see the long line of Disney Princesses evolve in attitude, roles, and style. Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora these classic characters have been followed by some very different women thanks to the amazing evolution of the Disney princess. Since the first ever Disney princess in 1937 up to the one introduced in 2016, there have been plenty of changes in the way Disney represents female characters. From the classic era of princesses waiting for their princes to save them, through the renaissance era of princesses showing more independence, up to the modern era where love interests fall by the wayside in favor of bravery and adventure, Disney princesses have evolved hugely over the past 80 years. And weve charted the whole story. The first wave of princesses in the 1930s and 1950s in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty were all about passively waiting for their prince to come. They looked the same, they acted the same, and they were all pitted against the same enemy a bad woman, as the foil to their good character. There was a break of 30 years until the next wave of Disney princesses arrived, and boy did that hiatus lead to a different approach when the princess movies returned. In 1989s The Little Mermaid Ariel tried to break free from her fathers hold and showed a new kind of independence that audiences were going to get used to in the princess movies that followed in the 1990s. Belle in Beauty and the Beast continued this new tradition. With Jasmine in Aladdin and Pocahontas and Mulan following, it was clear a new kind of Disney princess was taking charge. And coming from more culturally diverse backgrounds too. But that wasnt without its critics. There was a break of more than 10 years, but in 2009, Disneys more feminist princesses began to appear with Tiana in The Princess and the Frog. Disneys first African American princess was hailed as a heroine to look up to, being hardworking and not relying on a man. She was followed by Rapunzel in 2010s Tangled, and then things got even more interesting. In 2012s Brave, Merida had no love interest at all, and there was no marriage at the end of this Disney princess movie. Similarly, Frozen in 2013 was more about sisterly love than romantic love. Then in 2016 Disney brought forward its most progressive princess yet, Moana, the Polynesian adventurer. Geez, so much bigotry in this video, really hate this movie features a non-white Mary Sue so we must kiss its ass culture. First of all, what the hell is wrong with including romance to a story? Why would you think that it makes the heroine look weak? Also, what's wrong and embarrassing with occasionally needing help from someone- or rather specifically- from a person that happens to be male? Because that's precisely your problem, that the one offering help is a man, if it's a woman it's all cool. In any old disney princess movie: She needed a prince to save her, so lame and anti-feminist, Elsa needs someone to save her and Anna steps in: Omg, sisterly love, such a dynamic duo, Elsa is such a role model. You shouldn't teach little girls that they shouldn't rely on others, it's unhealthy. Second of all, just because a movie does not include a black or asian person that doesn't mean it has no culture. All the early princesses have their own different cultures, they just happen to be white. That's discrimination and it's racist af. Stop worshiping movies just for including characters of literally any other possible skin color than white, do it only if the movie is actually worth it. Why must suddenly every woman in fiction become an absolute badass with no weak spots and no desire to find love? Why must you turn feminism into man-hating propaganda? Why must everything be political these days?

i find it amusing u people dont make the distinction with movies made in a diferent age and comparing them to thinking trends of today, those were the times then, get use to it cupcakes: D, and u ignorants should understand films are made with target audiance in mind, considering what the majority of populace is in the USA, it should be no surprise most would fare better than those made to a target audience in mind ex. princess and frog flop(no sequal, shorts or small screen, another recent one being VALERIAN whos target audiance where mostly french who understood or read the comic vs the world who had no idea who they were, and this feminazy aproach to people finding love being almoust a taboo or relying on each other to balance there own cons and pro's being a no no seems to borderline insanity.
WAKE up people most of today's feminists are just trolls who hate everything, this video being perfect example, if the childhood movies our parents or grand parents watched and any sane person would take with a grane of salt and being a product of there time are considered by this disfunctional creatures as offensive and degrading, then that should be enought proof of the state of mind of said feminists

My Top 3 are:
#1. Ariel (She turns the typical princess trope upside down thanks to her strong proactivity who doesn't sit around and be a passive and weak damsel in distress. She has an interesting and memorable story, a lovable and genuine personality, her curiosity about the human world also makes her interesting, and her looks and voice puts me in a good mood)
2. Anna (She's the princess I relate to the most. She acts and thinks alot like me, she's quotable, her chemistry with Kristoff is alot of fun, and I love her character growth in Frozen 2 because of how she manages to save both her sister and the enchanted forest despite her fears and isolation holding her back. I buy this because of how much I relate to her)
3. Tiana (She's down to earth and realistic. She takes the infamous Follow Your Dreams message and turns it over its head by acknowledging that getting what you want in life takes hard work and not just by wishing on a star alone)

May I just point out what the difiniton of a strong femal charecter is?
A strong female charecter is a woman who is developed! Not all strong women have to shoot stuff or save people. They just have to have personality, not be a flat, pointless charecter. Im not saying there's anything wrong with being loud, and bold, but strong comes in many different forms. Strong can be silen strong can be passionate, it can be a million different things. I never saw the disney princesses as weak, i saw them as role models, who were pretty, and talented. hey say that kids need positve role models, but who says that the disney princesses aren't! Being pretty and wanting a love life aren't bad goals!
Im just saying, that being strong isn't always what many people picture it as today.

I don't want politics (that just ruins everything, I want entertainment with a good story and characters. Also there is nothing wrong with wanting love (sure you shouldn't rush to marry the first person you meet in real life; but doesn't mean love stories in movies are automatically a bad thing either) or wanting to be traditional either. There is not enough love in this world.

Snow White, Aurora and Cinderella were not passive. They were not damsels in distress. They were in no danger. Aurora and Snow were just under sleeping spells. Does that mean you are a damsel when you get knocked out? Also, Cinderella was only made to do chores. Chores are not dangerous. She was locked in her room which was not dangerous either.

And how is Snow White ans Cinderella weak. Snow White ran away from a women who was trying to kill her, and Cinderella was abused and didn't let it break her

I would love for Disney to release Ananya already. I can't wait! It would be cool if they did it now because they have so many cultures except for India!

Why is Mulan called a Disney princess, her father was not a king, nor was she the emperor's daughter, therefore she cannot be a princess?
