When we hear visual effects, CGI or VFX, our minds tend to wander to the wondrous world of magical animation and the replicated explosion of action movies like in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, what about those subtle uses of CGI that we always overlook but can impact an entire film? CGI and visual effects have come a long way since they were first introduced to Hollywood back in the 1950s. In fact the first film to use CGI was Alfred Hitchcocks Vertigo (1958) in order to create patterns in the animation. When you compare that to the realism of todays films its almost hard to believe. Its hard to look past all the glitz and glam of the obvious visual effects in films like Twilight, Harry Potter, and SpiderMan, and see the effort that goes into the small details of a super suit or facial reconstruction. Of course there are those movie moments that didnt exactly benefit from CGI were looking at you Chuckesmee but we have the capacity to deage an actor on screen without anyone noticing anymore! Ready to find out what visual effects you didnt realize were incorporated in some of your favorite franchises? Or what they had to alter about Robert Downey Jr. to have him looking his best in SpiderMan: Homecoming? Youll never take the nuances of CGI for granted after catching a glimpse of these scenes. Which subtle CGI moment was your favorite? Can you think of any other moments you were shocked to find out were CGI? Let us know in the comment section below

Visual effects in the movies have evolved dramatically since their introduction in the 1980s. The art of creating realistic looking environments, monsters, creatures and buildings continues to evolve, with many 2D and 3D movies now relying on the creative talent at special effects companies like Industrial Light & Magic and Weta to enhance their stories with stunning VFX.

Anything is possible with modern CGI, but even in the 1990s, movies like Independence Day and Terminator 2 were wowing audiences. They remain classic examples of the incredible storytelling that can be achieved through visual effects. From aliens invading Earth to a return to the Titanic, the CGI in these 90s movies holds remarkably well.

Harry Potter, Avengers, Twilight, etc. CGI made these movies so great. The team who works on the special effects should be praised.
