Tom was graced with the role by complete chance and if it werent for his quickwitted thinking, we may not have been able to see him in the titular role. It also helped that he kept character through multiple injuries on set and by just being that older brother figure to many of the younger cast. Felton was pretty unknown of the calibour of the films he was doing, but maybe that was a good thing. If some people had it their way, we wouldve seen a dramatic change in his character later on, but that will never be. His performance lent a hand to the starstudded cast performance and helped us through Dracos dramatic change in the later films.
