Top 10 Hated Comic Book Characters That Became Favorites

we’re counting down our picks for unpopular comic characters that gained lots of fans. Beware of minor spoilers ahead. Our countdown includes characters Aquaman, Mr. Freeze, Ben Reilly and more! Is there a beloved character with a turbulent past that we missed I'm not sure if Gwen Stacy counts. When she first appeared, she was a very unpleasant girl towards Peter. As the series progresses, she is like MJ from the Sam Raimi movies. Shallow and petty. Not to mention a plot device, which explains why they decided to kill her off at the hands of the Green Goblin. Hell, no one talked about her during my childhood. But thanks to the Spectacular cartoon and the Marc Webb movies, she became so popular that she was even turned into a superhero known as Spider-Gwen!

Is there an inverse of this list I'd have a suggestion for both Marvel and DC.
- Deadpool - weird to say since he is popular again, but for a while, there was a bit of fatigue over him due to the proliferation of Deadpool titles and appearances
- Harley Quinn - might be just me, however, I grew weary of her because there was an inundation of projects with her - multiple solo and team comics, getting shoehorned into that disaster of a Birds of Prey movie, a cartoon series just for her, and that recent video game that sacrificed the dignity and legacy of Batman to make Harley look badass. Though, I think a part of my dislike is just about how the character became written after 2015; and also, she was intentionally always obnoxious, but this flaw is now framed as noble.

Not Comics But The Cast Of Sealab 2020 (1972) That 1970's cartoon was so boring and nothing to write home about that after stumbling across a VHS of Sealab Adam Reed and Matt Thompson retooled It Into Sealab 2021 (2000-2005) as a Foundation Of Adult Swim alongside Harvey Birdman Attorney At Law, The Brak Show, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Space Ghost Coast To Coast, and the recently acquired Home Movies and the rest Is history

I can assure you that the Polka Dot Man isn’t anyone’s favorite. In the comic’s, he’s just a wacky villain who you can’t take serious and is very uninteresting.
However, thanks to James Gunn, many people, including myself, loved him in The Suicide Squad and can’t help but feel sympathy for him. Gunn gave this character a character.
That’s one hated comic book character that became a favorite.

Squirrel Girl only has massive Writer Protection! I used to run Super Hero RPGs and I had so many people want to be Squirrel Girl because they thought that they would be invincible. She never survived a single low level fight. She even got killed by 2 normal Hydra Goons in 2 rounds! I wasn't even trying to get her. But I wasn't going to protect her either. Without Extreme Writer Protection she can't beat anyone!

However, in the comics anyway, Mr. Freeze has received a questionable retcon, which showed that he was an abusive and controlling husband to Nora, thus making his one redeeming factor no longer present. Arguably, his desperation to save Nora could be a guilty conscience, but the comic that revealed his abusive past seemed to be pretty clear it was more about him wanting to control Nora again.

Yeah, no. While Miles does have legit fans and he is a good enough character (especially compared to other knockoffs, those make him look like Superman, he never succeeds without Peter Parker, his popularity is very excessively overestimated and he is still compared to the original Spider-Man; hell, he would probably be more popular if he got his own identity and costume.

Red Hood is honestly extremely impressive. Being so unpopular of a fictional character that an audience votes for your permanent death has to be some sort of achievement. To pivot that into a compelling anti hero is incredible (oddly mirrors The Rock in wwe die Rocky die turned him from a blue chip rookie to the people’s champion)

Yeah. Miles Morales is nobody's favourite. Except for Marvel lawyers trying to keep the Steve Ditko-made hero from reverting to Steve Ditko's family when his copyright runs out. Oh, and also the Marvel marketing executives trying to create a black superhero to suck in the black demographic.

I have and always will detest Miles Morales. He is still a poor, woke third rate Spider-Man wanna be. No number of award winning animated films will change my mind. He'll never equal or eclipse the legend or legacy of Peter Parker's Spider-Man either in the comics or the MCU.

I liked Miles in Into the Spider-verse, but found him kind of annoying in Across; I understand that his new flaws are a part of an arc, but until it is solved in a sequel, as it stands, he is annoyingly stubborn in spite of evidence screaming at him that he may be wrong.

I wonder if the Spot would qualify considering how he was one of Spider-Man’s lesser villains and the only appearance I can remember him having pre-Across the Spiderverse is an episode of the 90s animated Spider-Man show

Calendar Man.
A joke villain of the week in Batman comics until the masterpiece that is The Long Halloween reinvented the character into something of a Hannibal Lector esc figure. Now that’s writing to behold.

I didn't know that Squirrel Girl had Ratcatcher 2 powers, with squirrels. I've seen our cat (Doily Doily Doily) chase a squirrel in the yard twice, & they are weirdly fast.

It’s thanks to the animated show and the Arkham city game Mr freeze became amazing now I’m hoping someday he gets the proper live action adaptation in a future Batman film

Slade - Truly a Villian you Love to hate. He made The Teen Titans lives a living Hell & we Love him for it. & being voiced by Ron Perlman was the cherry on top.
reply

I don’t think anyone hated Mr. Freeze. He just wasn’t interesting until the Adam West show changed his name and Batman TAS gave him a tragic backstory.

I remember Aqua Man was always the butt of jokes from everybody, but Justice League/Unlimited made him cool, then Jason Momoa playing him made him a badass.
reply

Jason Todd/Red Hood has always been one of my favorite comic book anti-heroes.
He's basically the Hot Headed/Hot Shot Big Brother of The Bat Family.

reply

Although, apparently ol' Ben Reilly is suffering a new loss of popularity, or rather, fandom anger at the writers for making him a villain.
