Everyone has an opinion when it comes to Oscar snubs. Here's ours! In this opinion piece, we'll break down why Greta Gerwig shouldn't have been nominated for Barbie. This video will discuss Barbie, the 96th Academy Awards, and most importantly, why Greta Gerwig did not deserve to be nominated for Best Director. Did you enjoy this video Would you be interested in seeing more pop culture opinion peices Don't make small trouble about nothing. You're going to make trouble, make it big. Well, I'm sure you've heard Greta Gerwig was not nominated for best director. It is not fun. Is it down with Hollywood. Burn it to the ground. Well, before you grab your pitchfork and torch, because everyone has those. Let's examine why she didn't receive a nomination. Because let's be honest here, she didn't really deserve one First, and perhaps most, obviously, barbie is just way too mainstream and the Academy doesn't like that. It's a goofy comedy, based on an iconic toy brand that's been around for decades, and it's full of product placement, however tongue and cheek, they are depicted, heck, there's an entire sequence that takes place in Mattel headquarters. Anatomy of a fall is a dramatic examination of family and trauma. Killers of the flower moon is a three and 1 half-hour, epic about a silenced tribe. The turbulent nature of greed and the bloody path of American expansion Oppenheimer is a 3OUR biopic about the father of the atomic BOMB. Poor things is Yos lanos at his most Yos-lanos. And the zone of interest is a heavy examination of the Holocaust. A comedy about sentient Barbie dolls being among this group is like someone in sweatpants. At a black-tie event, you don't fit in and you'll probably get laughed at for being there. Oh, but I don't want you. He, unlike her nominated contemporaries. Gerwig doesn't do anything flashy as a director. Barbie is a very straightforward film without much flourish, and there's nothing wrong with that. Heck. It allowed the film to scale that rough 2023 box off his mountain and grow well over $1 billion. But it's not best director material, the story is told linearly. There are no gob-smacking editing techniques, no subversion of convention. The messages, while good are conveyed in a blunt manner, with characters giving speeches that would make Shakespeare proud and outright vocalizing the movie's themes. If all of that is also true for a doll just representing a woman, then I don't even know. It's clunky. And it comes across. Very, look at us. We're being important. Gerwig also didn't command powerhouse performances. Ryan Gosling is funny, sure, but her own lead actress, the character the whole movie revolves around, wasn't recognized, and the nomination of America Ferrera was considered the biggest joke of the year. She couldn't even believe it herself. The power of Barbie lies almost entirely in its writing. It's a fantastic script. You'll get to see all the good work we've done to fix the world. You'll be such a hero to them. All those grateful powerful women who owe their wonderful lives to Barbie. The themes and messages, while somewhat awkwardly delivered, are nevertheless, very powerful. The characters are enjoyable, and they're given plenty of witty lines and scenarios to act out. Ken, putting on two pairs of sunglasses will never, not make me laugh. Every night, is, boy night. The whole movie has a very self-aware attitude about itself. And Gerwig was smart to write it in that style. I'm not stereotypical Barbie. Pretty note to the filmmakers. Margar Robbie is the wrong person to cast if you want to make this point and wouldn't you know, it? The writing was recognized by the academy. Crazy. Think about this. Would another director have been able to do what Gerwig did in adapting her script to the screen? Yes, probably. But would another writer have been able to write the script in the first place. Barbie is also a very technical film, and admittedly a very well-made one. The eye-popping costumes were recognized as was the brilliant production design. And of course, there are the two songs for just, and at Put Billy Ish on the Oscar stage and watch those Gen Z numbers roll in. Of the movie's eight nominations, half are found in technical categories. Over half if you don't include best pitcher. But technical mastery doesn't often equate to a best director nomination, whether you agree or not. The Oscars are typically split into two halves, the technical half, and the more serious half, which encompasses the writing, directing and acting categories, sorry, editors, sound designers, and visual effects artists. But this half is typically the one that draws all the attention. This is bad. This is really bad. Many popular blockbusters have received technical nods without the director themselves being recognized. Sure, it's the director's job to unify all these aspects into one cohesive Ho, but the director's job is much larger than making their movie look and sound professional. Okay, I think I get it. No, no, no, this isn't the answer. Finally. What many people seemingly don't realize around Oscar season, is that there are only a finite number of slots, despite repeated claims that quote the Oscars, don't matter. You can bet that every single year, there will be a heated discussion about snubs and upsets. Not everyone can be nominated And sorry, just because a movie was entertaining, doesn't mean it's Oscar material. Oh my god! You've never seen the Godfather. This movie is a rich blend of Copalis, aesthetic, genius, and a triumph to Robert Evans, and the architecture of the 70s studios. Can you start the movie over and just talk through the whole thing. Who do you take out to give Greta Gerwig a spot? Justine trier? No anatomy of a fall, won the palm door, and is the best foreign film of the year, christopher Nolan. Nah, he once again, blended a strong emotional story with technical virtuosity, and come closer. He's probably going to win Yos lanos. Have you seen the beautiful mind warp? That is poor things. Jonathan Glazer, he directed a modern masterpiece of Holocaust drama, martin Scari. You're going to deny that man. His 10th Oscar nomination. You're going to deny him becoming the most nominated living director and second most nominated director in movie history. Get out of here. So who gets the boot? If you can't say, then, don't tell me. Greta Gerwig was snubbed, talking to me. Then. Who the hell else are you talking? Talking to me. If you're on your phone, make sure you go into your settings and switch on notifications. Okay, look, barbie is an entertaining film. There's no doubt about it, but it's just not best director material. Don't blame me. Blame mattel, then make the rules. It's too mainstream, too straightforward, too blunt in its preaching and moralizing. Well, the Kens have to start somewhere. And one day, the Kens will have as much power and influence in Barbie land as women have in the real world. It's a movie that gets by mainly on the charisma of its cast. The wit of its script, and the fun of its production. A director needs to make a statement to be nominated. I am here. And, this is my movie. I dare you, not to recognize me.

I’ve said all along since seeing the movie that Ryan Gosling’s performance was almost too good for the material and I loved Barbie for what I took it as; a fun movie. People being upset that he’s up for best supporting actor need to turn off their emotions for a minute and think about it. I’m a big Margot Robbie fan and I loved her performance but did she deserve best actress That’s a way bigger category than best supporting anything and a lofty thing to expect from a fun movie. I say that because normally Oscars and fun movies don’t mix. And was she really the best actress out of everybody last year I can’t say because I haven’t seen the others but I would guess not. Besides it’s up for best picture so why would they complain Just because the two main women involved didn’t make the cut Grow up. Seriously the technical stuff it’s up for is well earned because the movie looks beautiful like no other I’ve seen in a while. Like a lot of women I teared up while watching it but not because of the Billie Eyelash song I was overwhelmed during the first few minutes of Barbie waking up in her dream house and going about her morning by a huge shot of Nostalgia. So yeah I get the emotions because it stirs them up but the outrage is ridiculous.

Wow, so much respect for this video! I haven't seen any of them yet lol, but based on this video alone and what I've heard about Barbie and the rest Definitely makes sense! I'm looking forward to seeing Barbie too but yeah, the so called whiners are just complaining as usual!
Since we're being brave here, I will point out that just cause it's Martin Scorsese, doesn't mean it's always good! Haha, yeah I said it! He's overrated! Especially his more recent one's! It's mostly the same boring tropes! I actually did try watching Irishman and fell asleep! Anyways, nice vid on speaking some truth!

while movies like Killers of the Flowers Moon, Oppenheimer and Poor Things deserve to win Oscars and are still great movies to tell you the truth the reason people are going to show favouritism to movies like Barbie, The MCU and Super Mario Bros is that people like Happier and more uplifting movies and easier to understand while the others and a bit sad, dark and long with commentary you really have to think and have a different opinion and a different way of thinking that might get to hard and to difficult to figure out and it's hard doing that while watching a sad movie sometimes
reply

Drama, History, Biopics, what about just lifting our mood from whats going around in our sad world Musicals used to do that during the War or Comedy This is just a fun movie for the Kids and/or Family night if you have a Theatre still open near you.
It made a pile of money and that was the draw from the beginning. It did not tell the story of how Barbie, in real life, came to be, but it sure felt good to smile again. POV.

That the academy leans towards melodrama is exactly my point that for at least the last 60 years or so, they have been biased against certain genres. Recently putting foreign melodramas to avoid entertaining movies. Even though it has best foreign language film. How many animated movies were nominated for best picture after best feature length animated movie beame a category. I can tell you NONE.
reply

The entire movie was just a (nonsensical) montage that ended where it started. No, the points it made were not good; it is not literally impossible to be a woman. I love that soliloquy, ranted by a woman who had a great paying job, an awesome child, home, car and absentee husband she gave zero ss about. She was literally what so many women say they wish could be.
reply

Let's be honest the movie is too silly packed with a lot of speeches that feels more like a lesson more than a movie it was a fun ride But they wiped mens' face with the floor which made me think what if it's the other way around, won't be the same huh! At last it was funny but silly

Greta has been nominated for prior work she’s done like Ladybird, she’s not hurting from not getting nominated. She still made a successful movie awards or not.
Also Whoopi said it best, just because you don’t get nominated doesn’t mean you’re not talented.

reply

It’s really not that Oscar worthySure the cinematography is good, the acting is good, but the dialogue was mid, the social commentary was excruciating I can name you 10 movies in 2023 that had amazing use of cinematography and acting that didn’t even get nominated.
reply

There’s too much fuss made about the Oscars anyway. Movies are a form of art, and art by its very nature is subjective. If you enjoy a movie don’t let a group of snooty gatekeepers tell you it’s a bad movie. If you like it that’s all that matters.
reply

This whole thing proves women dont want gender equality.
America ferrera and Ryan gosling were nominated for barbie, a man and a woman, it doesn’t get more equal than that
But equality clearly isnt enough for women

reply

Thank you for sharing your two cents with us, Nathan. I do agree with your opinion that the film is a little too goofy compared to the other Best Director Contenders, but at least Greta Gerwig got recognised for her writing.
reply

Despite all the snubs, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Barbie. I feel like Greta Gerwig made it mostly for those who weren't big fans of Barbie, like me. I think she did a really good job overall
reply

I recognize that I'm veering into whataboutism, but if Gerwig shouldn't get a nom, neither should Chris Nolan. Oppenheimer was good, but wasn't his best.
Instead, Celine Song should get the nom.

reply

I'm Not Defending Barbie (2023) Or Anything But Blood In Blood Out (1993) was 3 hours and 10 minutes yet I'd rather watch that than stuffy old Oppenheimer (2023) screw the Oscars and The Emmys
reply

I can't even finish this I'm so mad. Both Greta and Margo should be nominated but side characters got some get the f outta here. Thats I never watch the awards and don't support.
reply

Terrible
She ABSOLUTELY deserved it
If her film gets a Best Picture nomination, she definitely should get one for director for the movie she co wrote!

reply

Two things can be true:
1. Greta Gerwig is a very talented director
2. With 5 nominations, not every talented person will get nominated every year

reply

The behind-the-scenes writer, Nathan deserves to have free meals at any restaurant He goes to, or free drinks at any pub or bar he goes to. Kudos young man.
reply

The movie was entertaining and worth a watch Ryan Gosling contnues to show a wide range. But this movie being Oscar worthy I don't know why it would be.
