Hairdresser Reacts To Dreadlock Removal Videos I will say that adding water and conditioner is more recommended for black and textured hair. Even finer 3b types will benefit from the slip of the conditioner. the issue of elasticity from water causing snapping may still be a consideration for chemically treated black hair but typically, coarser hair and the tighter curl patterns will break more from going in dry and pulling without any slip to loosen the curls from being joined together so tightly.

I think that using conditioner for 3 or 4c hair to remove locs make sense. As the hair is so different to like, 1a hair or whatever straight smooth hair is, i don't think the wet-hair=breakage is the same thing. Also 3 to 4c hair is the best hair for locs as it's kinky, bouncy, and that allows air through the locs. So i think it's one rule for others or whatever, conditioner for black people with locs is better and releases them easier in a healthier way than without, but it's not the best for white people's hair because it'll cause elasticity and breakage to the fine and straight strands, etc. As well, this woman seems like she's Jamaican, so i would consider any black Jamaican person with gorgeous locs a loc expert, but probably for black hair only. So you called for a loc expert, but as i said a black Jamaican would be an expert on locs for black hair. A loc expert who's white may not know as well, but then this Jamaican woman probably wouldn't know anything about white people locs and how to avoid them getting mouldy, because black people's hair is for locs and doesn't go mouldy.

Why wouldn t you just cut them off. I wouldn t go through all that pain and trouble when you can just grow your own hair plus they will have 5 years of growth so it wouldn t be that short. I had my hair up in corn row braids for about 2 months for the summer and I took them out. I lost so much hair from the underside of my hair I m gonna have to go get it cut up to the breakage and grow out my hair again because I have OCD and it looks terrible from the back because there s a huge hole in the bottom of my hair and it looks so thin. I was trying to leave it and just let the underside grow out but it s setting my OCD off so bad that I have to get it cut. It s going to be about 3 shorter but it s gonna look better and I can t wait to have it look normal again.

I have thought about doing dreads, but there's no way after seeing the ball of old dead hair and skin that came out of the first girl's head. OMG, that was scary to even think about carrying around on my head! I still think they look great on ppl though. The first and third girls had beautiful hair after removing their locks, but I think the second girl should have cut her hair because it looked broken and damaged.

As a black woman who has had her locs since 2019, I would just cut my hair all off and grow it back. The cosmetologist and certified natural hair specialist in is screaming make a detangling mix! Water will shrink the hair back if you detangle with it alone. I have removed several of my clients locs in hours, not DAYS, HOURS with a mix that is mostly oil based. It is required to give slip to the hair and aid in detangling.

Going on 9 years of dread life (I got mine started on my birthday so it's like sharing a birthday with my hair. After all the time and care it took for them to lock up, I will never EVER take them out, but I do get them cut shorter since I can't stand long hair on myself. The weight that leaves my shoulders from a trim alone is immense, I can only imagine just how much hair is really cut off from my my trims.

Wow. the 2nd woman with possible mold in her locs! Yikes! That can happen if you're not cleaning your locs properly and most importantly, not letting them dry completely. Locs take forever to dry and you gotta make sure they're dry inside (use a hair dryer or sit under a dryer) the locs not just feeling dry on the outside. Leaving them damp inside for too long will encourage mold growth and other nasties.

I took 5 days to comb out my dreads, just to end up getting a haircut way shorter than I had asked for. I could just have cut them off instead of having this journey.
Now I can nearly sit on my hair, I only trim the ends myself and that's it. I am a professional so having long hair makes it even easier to give it a decent cut myself as long as I stick with shapes I can cut without standing behind me

12: 45 Unless you habitually bail (which I seriously doubt you do b/c you're so nice) - you're a good friend in an honest friendship. Make yourself available with boundaries intact, otherwise you'll feel used and they won't understand when you need to pull back. It's okay to say no. even hell no
edit: BTW I'm in the hell no camp but would hire a helper to take my place if they needed that

One of my friends had dreadlocks and they always stunk like that girl was so stinky because her head was just so stinky people finally started telling her tey didn't wanna be friends cause her hair stunk up any place she went. Thank God she just chopped them off and shaved her head it didn't even take long for her hair to start growing back out that girl was a wreck

I've never had locks but I do have low porosity (3c - 4a) hair. I suspect the last woman also has low porosity hair. With my hair wet and conditioner on it, I can detangle my entire head in about 15 minutes and it is easy and pain-free. When my hair is dry it takes longer than that to do a single braid or twist, it hurts, and it feels like there is more breakage.

how to clean you lock/ dreads:
step1: put water in a hair bowl.
step2: pour apple cider vinegar in the water while dreads are in the water make sure to get all over your hair.
step3: put baking soda on all in your hair.
step4: the get a lemon and squeeze the lemon juice all in your hair.
step5: rinse and wash with shampoo of choice

I can only imagine the relief one must feel with their scalp once having them out, especially if one has thicker/more coarse hair.
Hell, wearing a bonnet overnight gives me a headache, ponytail for more than a few hours is asking for trouble. Kudos to anyone who can tolerate it and continue on for years much respect all around.

Detoxing Locs:
Lemon juice
Baking soda
Apple cider vinegar
Its a bath bc the ingredients need to soak thru the hair thoroughly.
The 1st bath/soak will be disgusting so repat until the water jus shows the ingredients.
Then wash thru with whatever hair system of choice.
Use oil the hydrate the hair n scalp

All those ladies, especially that last one, are so beautiful that they could have shaved their heads and still looked gorgeous. But it was very satisfying to watch their transformations. I helped my niece remove her locks years ago in India and it was an ordeal! She s never gone back to locks.

Better to refer to them as locs Brad. As dreadlocks stemmed from a negative connotation on black peoples hair. Can be seen as offensive. Like other words we may use it amongst each other, but it would be appreciated if you took it into consideration. It s sort of triggering.
reply

I would love to know why is it that some white people can wear dreadlocks, because I thought it was an afro-carribean, African as well as Indian hairstyles? Not accusing white people of cultural appropriation, but would love to know when is it appropriation and when it isn't.
reply

Brad I want you to research black hair a lil more before speaking on it. You have to wet our hair before combing (unless your hair is straightened) you have to add water to our hair before combing out. Even if it s a mist. Never comb our hair dry especially combing out locs
reply

Personally, I don't think I would help take them out, but I would volunteer to cut some of them out. The possibility of them being too gross for me might be an issue.
I enjoy coloring & customization. I definitely do not have that kind of time. Day who?

reply

I ve said this many times on different videos, black people NEED to at least have our hair damp when detangling. If not, you will cause breakage from trying to detangle dry kinky curly hair. It s different for those who have type 1, 2, and maybe even 3 hair.
