Brad, it wouldn't hurt your career to actively get into learning about curly hair textures, yes mainly the coily variety like this, im unsure if yhis is 4c hair i believe its 4a/b. Im surprised you already dont know how to deal with curly hair since you say youre a professional hair stylist? I understand each stylist has their own category and youre a colorist but i know you also do specalize in styles AND cuts. I personally dont think anyone should call themselves an expert in hair unless you can say that about all hair types. It would be more helpful if salons noted that in their websites. Its okay to admit yall dont wanna learn too. It seems more like that all because its more difficult to deal with. Its just the impression i get from the community. It sucks that straight hair people can go anywhere but curly Qs dont have that luxury. We typically have to pay 10x the normal amount for the people we find. Resulting in doing it at home. You should also understand how bad products can be for hair in general. Hair stylist love feeding us products just to buy them, when in reality using more than 3 products just weighs the hair down, adds a fake barrier between the hair that eventually grows bacteria and causes dry brittle hair making you think you need the products. When you dont actually need all those products. The goal for long healthy hair or healthy in general is to balance your scalp and help it understand what it needs, the hair cant so that when its smothered by products. So its best to find your 3 favorite products and stick to that. 3 at a time anyway. Moisture is #1 for curly hair. So an oil or cream. Anything that hardens the hair is gonna cause later damage. Yes its little damage but makes a difference in the long run overall. Problem is. nobody cares about training their bodies to be healthy, yall want a temporary fix and i simply dont get that.

When Brad says that hair schools needs to teach all hair textures is so true. I live in a small town and I have tried every salon in my town and in the surrounding area and they always just mess it up because they aren't used to super thick, curly, frizz prone hair. I've never had a haircut I've loved, I've never asked for the same hairstyle. They feel my hair after a phone consult and they are super surprised at how thick and curly it actually is and instead of telling me they know nothing about my type of hair they attempt to cut it with usually the help of every other stylist in the salon and messes it up horribly because they cut and style my hair straight when it's coily curls and when I wash it and wear it how I normally do because I don't straighten my hair anymore it looks very clumpy in some places and looks like they just chunked out huge sections of hair.
Hate it being so thick but I don't trust myself with thinning shears so I just own hair every 6months to a year always doing research and watching videos on what I want for about 3 weeks before doing it. I will always mess it up but never to the point of no return or even hating it. I've never cried at me cutting my own hair but have 10+ times from a salon. I see it as I didn't go to school, I don't know what I'm doing, if I mess it up it's my own fault. they did go to school, they are suppose to know what they are doing and if they mess it up I look and feel like crap and I'm out of the money.
I just wish one day I can find a stylist I can trust with my hair and makes me feel comfortable and confident and continue to go back to them but till them I'm my own stylist and one of these days I will have the money to get the mondo curl products I truly want for my hair but till then I have to stick to the cheaper products.

I really loved Brads interjection about the shortcomings of hair schools not teaching how to care for all hair textures.
My hair is just regular white girl wavy curly, nothing special, and yet I have learned more from black women online about how to care for my curly hair than I ever did from the hairdressers I paid to do my hair.
It s nice to hear hairdressers talk about how narrow their education is because I thought I was being extra until my last hairdresser straight up told me that I know more about hair care than she does. I appreciated the honesty but that was when I knew I needed to stop giving 100s of dollars to someone who doesn t know the difference between moisture and protein.
It should not be a special service or niche to see a curl specialist and pay well over 100 just for a proper trim. All respect to hairdressers but how is it just a one year program and then they re set for a career of doing all types of hair! It s time the profession took itself more seriously and I sort of wonder what weird misogyny this is
I understand taking special classes to upgrade skills or learn a niche trade but I m talking about trained hairdressers who don t know how to do a damn dry cut.

You are so correct about hair schools. I have been a licensed stylist for over 35 years and have been an instructor for almost 20 years. When I went to school not much was taught about highly textured hair. Which was truly sad. But I made it point to make sure all my students were well educated on all hair textures. I now teach at a Paul Mitchell School and our curriculum includes all textures but has one exclusively for 3a-4c hair. This includes smoothing, relaxing, dreads, braiding, sew-ins, and to me most importantly proper coloring techniques for highly textured hair. All instructors are properly trained on how to teach this curriculum. Thank you for bringing to light about cosmetology schools. I always say hair is hair you can get all textures and formations from anyone and as long as you truly understand hair you can be a great stylists!

So beautiful and fun to watch the transformations! I love how excited Brad is, my heart is racing just watching this video! I have extremely frizzy hair and it's so hard to protect it from the humidity in Florida. Omg these beautiful ladies, their hair really looks like silk! Just gorgeous! They all turned out amazing! I always flat iron my hair before curling, sometimes I leave it straight but other times I pin it up for a bit afterwards so I don't have to use more heat to get curls. Cool video.

Thank you for featuring ethnic hair textures, and also some of the hardships we have to face related to our hair! It is absolutely so hard for us to find decent stylists that know what they're doing. We often end up having to do it ourselves. I haven't been to a hair stylist in over 3yrs. I just do it myself because everyone messes my hair up.
I would love to see more transformation videos of kinky, coily, and curly hair textures

Thank you Brad Mondo for your reaction. Yes, you acknowledged how much time, energy & work that the styist ( most Black stylists) put into their service. I like to have my hair bumped/curled at the end because I look better with a fuller style and the curls will fall over time and will be straight eventually anyway. Yes, these stylists deserve to fairly compensated, especially when they are detailed and use quality products.

I do agree with you on that part beauty school do not teach you how to work with black hair if your white. Interbeautiful here in Texas and they did not teach us how to do there hair at all and we had black students they worked on black Black peopleand white students worked on white hair or Hispanic or any other kind of hair but a black person. That is sad.

When my friend was in cosmetology school, she would always ask me to come in, so she could practice on my natural 4ab hair. I remember her teacher telling her not to be afraid because it s just curly hair. The curls are just tighter. After that, my friend relaxed and slayed my hair, for years, until I moved away.

Chef's should be able to cook every single dish out there, regardless of their cultural or ethnic background. They should know all the techniques, know all the spices, know all the preparation tricks, they just should. Do better, Chefs.
That's kinda what you sounded like just now with Hair Stylists.

When I went to beauty school, we were taught how to do all hair types. That's because half of our instructors were white and the other half were black. The ratio of students was the same. Half of the students were black and the other half was white. That was 25 years ago.

These ladies are so beautiful and their hair is completely gorgeous both when coily and when straight, they also have the healthiest hair I have ever seen. The amount of care and work the stylish puts in is unreal. It's all just wow!

Our scalps are just as sensitive as everyone else. Please don t think that we are impervious to heat or burns. Stylist who know how to use hot combs are not touching the scalp at all. Great video though
