Hairdresser Reacts To Chaotic Home Relaxer Videos Brad Mondo When you’re going to use a relaxer you DON’T want to comb your hair a couple days before or while applying! You also don’t want to wash your hair before applying. Doing this will allow the relaxer to get to your scalp, make it burn, and you’ll have to wash it out too early before the hair is ready. Both of these will make your scalp burn and cause big sores on the scalp. I like your videos on cut and color, because you do it well, but PLEASE please practice doing curly hair and relaxers before you advise people doing it at home. Our community already struggles with trying to figure out our hair and don’t need more misinformation.

I am a black woman who has had relaxers since I was younger and now wear my natural hair. For me, I was constantly told that my natural hair was not school/work appropriate. Not just by white people. I am one of the few whose hair is difficult to relax, even when using super relaxers. So, having spent a lot of money to straighten my hair, then having to put heat on it daily to upkeep it, only for bosses, teachers, even principals to say that it is still not acceptable was extremely painful. I finally got sick of it and chopped it all off. I found the strength to accept my hair as it grew, and stand up to my boss, my professors at college, and the family members whose mindset was stuck in the past. It took a lot of self searching, and a willingness to believe in myself, all while getting negativity from others on a daily basis. If you have never been through something like that, then it is very difficult to understand. A lot of women have it a lot harder than I did. I, thankfully, did not loose my job over it, but I was talked to at my college about what is considered professional as someone entering the field of education. Even with all of that I kept my hair natural. So, a lot of women and men, especially those of color, receive constant backlash for wearing their hair the way that God made it, a simple right that every person should have. To them a relaxer isn't just about doing what you want with your hair, it is about being forced to change yourself into what others deem is acceptable, while at the same time denying your right to just be human like everyone else. I know that it shouldn't be a big deal, but it still is. In a lot of places, kids still get expelled from school for not straightening their hair, people loose their jobs because of it. So it can be a sensitive subject. I believe that people should have the right to do what they want with their hair, but even in the USA that is not something that everyone has the privilege to do.

I am so white I'm almost translucent and I have wavy-almost-curly hair - 2A-2C, I think, (every hair is SO fine, but I have millions so it's thick and hard to deal with) and the texture has changed several times throughout my life. It's currently more than 50% gray and feels weird to me and I HATE the color gray it is. It's not a pretty gray---yet---so I color the gray blue and not a day goes by (if I'm out and about) someone doesn't compliment me - which is kind of fun.
You are absolutely correct, Brad. I am SO jealous of black women and their ability to style their hair. I've always been $hit at it. I don't think it's necessarily because of ethnicity, but maybe due to culture. Their hair sometimes requires more care than other ethnicities so they grow up working with hair the way some of us do not. There's a REASON many of us go to professional hairdressers!

I always love watching you react to relaxers. Thank you!
Why ask why she’s using her hands when she explained it in the video I do the same when I have to do my own hair; ain’t nobody got time for that proper application business when you got too much hair. Brad, I do, sometimes, think you underestimate the STRENGTH of our coarser hair types like a 4c. The pulling, pressing and wrapping of our hair while relaxing it is very rarely going to hurt our hair. It’s the time that matters most. Also, we get relaxer on our skin all the time you just gotta be vigilant when washing it off to avoid any burns from leaving it in too long.

When I was in high school, my stylist relaxed, bleached, and dyed my hair in one session. My hair was a little bit longer than shoulder length when she started; after a few months it all broke off to ear length. I was so devastated and my hair looked horrid! Also, yes, relaxer on the scalp is definitely a no-no. Another stylist relaxed my hair a few years after the bleach fiasco and put the relaxer on my scalp. I got chemical burns on the right side of my head and the hair in that area never grew back as full as it used to be. :(

Thank you for that Brad. I never relaxed my hair because I was trying to look white. My white mother and her twin had super curly hair. I used to relax it to be more manageable because I have super curly hair and I prefered to wear it straight. I went natural once before then relaxed again. I went natural again like 4 or 5 years ago and decided i would never relax again because how long it took to grow it out lol. I miss the strait sometimes, but it is impossible to do it strait because i head sweat too much

Hi Brad, I love that you acknowledge when you don’t know something but are willing to learn. Most people think that we get relaxers to be European-ish but that’s not true. When you have like 4C or a tight curl pattern it takes insanely amounts of time and products to manage your hair. My daughter’s hair wash day can take 4 hours even at a salon because her curls starts to tighten as soon as air hits it. It will be dry at the ends but not at the roots. My hair does that so I have it kind of short.

OMG! My sister and I have really curly hair. Hers is more like corkscrew curls. Back in the early 1990s, she decided she was going to do a permanent relaxer, at home, by herself. She definitely got the curl out. However, she forgot one important step in the relaxing process. SHE FORGOT TO USE THE NEUTRALIZER! Her hair got so badly damaged that it was just falling out and was basically mush. So she went from her hair lenggt of at least halfway down her back, to a Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby, pixie!

Instead of saying praise black women for how they do their hair, the reason why the comment was given is cause of the intensity of the curls right Well then, why not say praise the women with curly hair They experience the same intensity if they got curly hair, but they're brown/blonde instead. Just sounded like people of other races aren't as good with their hair even though they might have the same hairtype when formulated that way.

I COMPLETELY AGREE! Black woman can do some hair! They put so much work into their hair. and it seems to ALWAYS pay off! Its almost like they all have stylest or beautician genes or something! I COMMEND YOU ALL! Whether its doing your natural hair (in SO many different ways, or wigs (making them look ABSOLUTELY REAL, the braids. ANY of it! Seriously, BRAVO ladies! You deserve tons of credit for the work you do!

Why are they washing their hair the night before putting a relaxer in I made the mistake of doing that when I was younger and had a hair appointment the next day. Never again. I learned my lesson. My scalp was BURNING because my follicles were still open and I had to sit there in pain for so long while the relaxer was processing. I would not recommend ever washing your hair before relaxing it.

I’m white (with wavy hair) and I wanted straight hair so bad as a teen my mom took me to a salon to get a relaxer. I would be too scared to do it at home. These people were very brave doing it themselves. Doing black hair is an art in itself and I admire the dedication it takes to produce so many styles. I can barely get my hair into a ponytail without having to clip the short layers back.

I love this topic due to I am so not a pro at hair and i do know how to do a relaxing perm. My other momma taught me how to do it i have personally done this about 8 times on my bestie and it turned out beautiful. one day i may do a video of me bleaching my hair just for you ( hugs your content is amazing) i learn a lot from your content and it makes me better at doing my hair

My hair is naturally curly. I think the last time I relaxed it was about 20 years ago. I’d done it a couple of times but never at home by myself. I got my neighbor who was a hairstylist to do it. I haven’t done it in years because it did change my curl pattern a little. Not terrible but enough to make me realize how much damage it would do to my hair if I did it again.

The stigma around relaxing is real, but also the chemicals are really dangerous. Even Brad expresses concern by saying it reminds him of acid. I do agree that it is your life and your hair so do whatever your heart desires!
There’s a lawsuit going around right now saying relaxers have been related to causing uterine cancers. .. Do your own research on that one though.

the first girls hair wasn’t even in bad condition. everyone knows if you keep your hair in a bun 24/7 it’s going to look like that whenever you take it down. of course it’s bound to be dry, because you don’t do anything but slick it down and put it back in. just wash it, condition it, treat it, moisturize it and you’re good.
literally not that serious

STOP GLAMOURIZING PILLS! Taking pills is not a fun and good/necessary thing for everyone. You can’t know if you need pills for something or how much of something you need just by a form online, we need medical professionals and exams/blood tests for that.
Lastly, there actually is a point of TOO MUCH VITAMINS that could do more harm than good

Its the first time i hear that there is a certain way to relax your hair because most of the time when we do relaxers my mom used to just slap it on my hair and comb it into a ponytail position and she told me to tell her when it starts burning then she would rinse it out if there is then i say lets send this to our mothers so they can do it proper
reply

The time pressure really gets to you bc you're trying to be thorough but not burn your scalp but also get the roots smooth but also not overprocess your hair and doing all of this without being able to see the back of your head. I would start off so neat, but the time crunch would ruin that real quick. This is if you're doing your own hair, ofc.

I give credit to all these women who put that much effort into their hair. Me i i have dead straight flat hair that can’t take a curl for shit, which i use to be upset about, but I’m like the lord knew what he was doing with me. Like Brad said, I would be a hot mess. Honestly, I agree w/ Brad, black women do have an art for doing their hair.
