Great video, but you had a bit of an error in the wording. Free radicals are actually missing an electron not an entire atom. Atoms are made up of three subatomic particles: neutrons, protons, and electrons. Free radicals are an atom or molecule that has an unpaired electron. Electrons normally exist in pairs and are highly reactive when they are unpaired. When a free radical comes in contact with another atom or molecule, it will take an electron from that molecule. This will stabilize the first free radical, but create a new free radical out of the second atom or molecule. This chain reaction can continue until one of the resulting free radicals comes in contact with an antioxidant or a second free radical. The key with antioxidants is that they can give up an electron without becoming unstable, stopping that chain reaction. I don't think you're completely wrong for questioning antioxidant marketing since it is often overblown. It is still important to remember that not all products claiming to have antioxidants are formulated so that your body can use them and you don't need fancy supplements to get antioxidants in your diet since they are naturally occurring in many fruits and vegetables. It's still really great to see non-scientists applying science and credible research to their own professions and everyday lives.

I'd love to see a video on sun damage and hair! It'd also be really great if, in whatever list of sunscreen for hair options you include, there was one for people who don't typically style their hair or don't use hairspray or similar hair products. I know you've mentioned hairsprays with UV protection before, but I've found it pretty difficult to find sunscreen for hair that doesn't have a different primary use, and as someone who hates stuff on my hair, I'd really appreciate it if there was an option to apply sun protection to my hair whenever I go outside, like with sunscreen for skin, without having to deal with the other functions of the product too.

They are so reactive and they set off a chain reaction. As soon as one oxygen radical reacts with a neutral species it forms another radical until a termination step occurs. Antioxidants essentially give up an electron to neutralize the free radical but instead of forming one on their own they are far less reactive than the initial one. An important thing to remember when discussing chemistry is we almost always talk about electrons and not really atoms themselves.

As a chemist, this was was fascinating to think about because usually I don t think of radicals like this lol. Also, just a slight correction, radicals aren t lacking in atoms, they are lacking in electrons (but generally the information was pretty good based on my knowledge of the subject)

I don't understand how do Americans eat so much avocado and still they don't use the old lemon drops to avoid oxidation. I don't know anyone in Mexico that makes guacamole without lemon juice. And that also works with apples. Ascorbic acid is awesome!

It's so cool that melanin is in itself a form of antioxidant! Is that why black folks tend to look younger for a longer time than white folks (just in general, I mean; I get that one's individual actions count for way more than genetics most of the time?

Free Radicals are Atoms missing an Electron! not molecules missing an atom.
But since they often not only grab an electron but the whole atom it belongs to and form a new molecule with it, i can see where the confusion came from.

Tip for guacamole: put half a lime for every avocado into it and it will keep delicious for over 24 hours. Pro tip: leave the seed in the mixture as well and it will keep it fresh for even longer than just with the lime.
