Other name suggestion: Poblano Pockets. Looks yummy and has many of the same ingredients as a chile relleno (err marinara, but a relleno of any kind it is not. any more than that poblano is chili. Regular chiles rellenos are already open to wide interpretation from bready, to eggy, to won-ton-ey. But they re all super easy and quick to make after just a little practice. presuming you re not going for the cover of Sunset magazine. Rellenos don t need to be pretty. The only real pain in the rear is cleanup because shallow frying is never neat. Every fall we used to have a relleno party. bring your favorite variety/heat of freshly roasted green chile (about 40 miles from Hatch, whatever flour related product you can spare (lots of bisquick in college pantries, and eggs or cheese if you have them. Oil and cheese provided. Everyone who couldn t already learned to make their own. Drinking a lot of cheap beer helps. So, with respect I must disagree that this is easier. or in fact more than relleno inspired. But I will make it and try it, with green chile sauce in place of marinara to increase joy and potentially reduce the grave-spinning of countless abuelas.

If I could have only one Mexican dish forever, it'd be chili rellenos, so last Summer we planted a dozen plants we started from seed. Couldn't wait to make a huge batch! Evidently, there was a cross pollination from the seed supplier: toasting the peppers (on the grill) and then peeling them, the fiery glow from my hands could've lit up a large city. OMG. Then eating the finished rellenos turned us into fire-breathing dragons. I love spicy but these went far beyond any heat I've had before. I gave my son a dozen, and wound up making canned green chilis from the remainder. He's also a hot salsa-type person and told me the heat verged on the thermonuclear - ha! And, yeah, I double-gloved before roasting those remaining peppers. Anyone with suggestions on finding a milder Poblano pepper would be appreciated: -)

Not bad. I think I will try this, but inclined to leave the chiles in much larger pieces. Also, I recommend looking up a recipe for the authentic sauce. Chef's looks a tad overpowering to me and a little too Italiano. I'm not sure I'll get this past my menfolk who are Chile Relleno purists, but I'll try. Maybe the prospect of my making them more often if it's easier will carry some weight?

Looks good. I d probably not dice it though. I d keep the strips the original length and form some shredded instead of cubed cheese by pressing it together then flatten it into a chili shape then put the other half of chili strips on top. That would allow you to avoid the deep frying as well, but retain a lot of the original shape and layers of a traditional chile relleno

Chile Relleno means Stuffed Pepper, this looks more like a Spanish Tortilla (Spanish Omelette) also, CHILE with an E is a Pepper, Chili with an I is the dish Chile con Carne or the Americanized version Chili con Carne which was shortened to just Chili the spicy meat and bean stew. Call that dish Chopped Poblano Peppers Pancakes with Red Sauce.

This does look wonderful. I'm going to put more cheese on it. Grated probably because I want it kinda stringy. Also, it needs crunch. I'll sprinkle grinded up corn chips on it because in my house we pretty much put that on everything. Every casserole, mashed potatoes, even Spanish rice. Everything.

I do this as a sort of frittata with eggs, bread and the chilies and cheese mixed in. For your sauce, I d recommend adding some crushed chicarrones into the sauce when it begins to simmer. They will be tender morsels of umami making your dish next level!

Hi, Just a thought. sear and char the chilis on an electric stove top burner/coil at Med-Hi (or so, for a few seconds and turn as needed. This is for folks that may not have fire access. Very little clean up, quite easy so don't worry.

Um, no! This is almost as bad as Rachael Ray trying to make pozole that has nothing to do with pozole. These look like the chiles rellenos that you get at a bad Mexican restaurant where there s more dough than chile.

I know several people with electric stoves mentioned roasting the peppers on the stove top. But I feel like roasting them underneath the broiler should be just as good, with easier clean up?
