Read more about Nasi Padang: Get my travel updates (its free): I was invited to attend a food event with Chowzter. com in Singapore, and so my wife and I flew to Singapore. But before the events took place, we had a bit of free time, and I used the opportunity to do what is the best thing to do in Singapore: eat. We were walking around the Chinatown area of Singapore, and I was trying to decide what to eat - not that there werent enough places to choose from - the problem was that there were too many decisions and too many delicious places to try, and I didnt know which one to choose. As we were walking around the Peoples Park Centre, which is kind of a tech mall, I caught sight of a restaurant called Warung Aneka Rasa Muslim Nasi Padang, that was busy. Seeing the words Nasi Padang, which happens to be one of my favorite meals in the world, I chose to go there immediately for lunch. Nasi Padang is a style of food from Padang on the island of Sumatra, in Indonesia. Sumatra happens to be very close to Singapore, and the entire Malay peninsula, so the food share some similarities with Malay cuisine, and there are also many people from Sumatra living in Singapore. Nasi Padang includes a plate of rice, topped with a variety of curries and dishes that are all prepared ahead of time, and ready to be ordered. To order, you just walk up to the front counter, get a plate of rice, and then tell them what dishes you want to add to the top of your rice. I got a plate of rice and added a big piece of chicken curry, plus some ikan bilis - fried anchovies and peanuts, and another dish of little fish fried with just a few stink beans - one of my favorite ingredients. Finally I also got a scoop of stir fried green beans or long beans, and then she added on a nice spoon of curry sauce over everything. Finally, a plate of Nasi Padang wouldnt be complete without a nice spoon of sambal, or chili sauce on the side. We got a table overlooking the road, with a nice Singapore breeze, and a nice friendly atmosphere. The restaurant was pretty crowded as it was right at the end of lunch, but we managed to find a seat. The Nasi Padang was not the best Ive had so far, but it was very good, and since it had been a while since I had eaten Nasi Padang is was really good. I think Warung Aneka Rasa Muslim Nasi Padang is an excellent restaurant to try Nasi Padang in Singapore when you are in the Chinatown area. Warung Aneka Rasa Muslim Nasi Padang Address: Peoples Park Complex Food Centre, 32 New Market Road, Singapore 050032 Open hours: I think the hours were from 9 am 10 pm daily, but I cant confirm 100%, in any case, if you go for lunch, you should be fin. Prices: We paid 13 SGD (9. 62 US) for both of our plates, for just 1 plate it was 6. 50 SGD

Mark, the next time you're here. try to make a trip down to Geylang Serai Market but it is open from morning till perhaps 3 or 4pm (for most stalls. There have several Nasi Padang stalls there (good ones, mind you) and also Nasi Ambeng and Nasi Rawon (which is my absolute fave. The sambal you had is prolly sambal belacan (prawn paste belacan i think) and the sour part comes from the small green lime juice. My mother and granny will usually fry the belacan a bit to intensify the flavour. And the pound it with red chillies and after which mom will add sliced green lime skin to the belacan. She only squeezed the juice whenever she eats, not really mixing it like most shops does. In our home. Sambal belacan is best eaten with coconut based gravy or kuah rawon (javanese dish. So glad you love Nasi Padang

As long as the food are well prepared and has that ump, will do. Don't have to go to the country of origin for authentic food, for what is authentic food. Even in Padang, Sumatra, the various dishes served on straw mats under coconut trees are so so, as the taste are subjective. Any dish that taste like your mum's cooking would get the thumb's up. Food from an nasi padang stall in Chinatown can be just as good as from a warong in Geylang Serai.

Nasi Padang usually refers to the Minangkabau style Malay food cooked by local Malays of Minang desecendants, but its original name is not nasi padang, instead, it's called nasi kapau in Indonesia. Minangkabau people are the natives of south west Sumatera island in Indonesia. Usually they are around areas like Bukit Tinggi, Padang, Pagar Ruyung in the south west of Sumatera.

Hi Mark, if you ever get to do a review on Indonesian food, please give a wider coverage than just the usual Javanese and Sumatran fares. Foods from Borneo, Sulawesi, Moluccas, Papua and others are just as tantalizing, if more diverse. From Bali's duck in banana leaf to Manado's spicy pork, Indonesian food will not disappoint

Dear Mark, welcome to Singapore. You may want to go to Arab Street Bugis to try the Nasi Padang at Hajah Maimunah Restaurant which serves one of the best Nasi Padang in Singapore. I would also like you to try another cuisine called Nasi Lemak and the best one is located at Changi Village which is a food haven.
