One of the many famous Penang street food dishes is wantan mee. Read more about Lebuh Acheh Wantan Mee here: Penang is one of the most famous cities in Malaysia and even throughout the world for its diversity of delicious food available. After having an action packed trip to Langkawi, Ying and I arrived in Penang. On our first day, I had some work to do, so we didnt go on a big street food adventure, but using the map on Foursquare, I found a restaurant called Lebuh Acheh Wantan Mee that served Penang wantan mee, and so we decided to go check it out. The Uncle and Aunty that ran the restaurant were extremely nice to us, and they had a choice of either pre fried wantan mee noodles or fresh egg noodles wantan mee. We decided to get one of each, plus a bowl of wantan dumplings in soup on the side. Malaysian wantan mee, which is sometimes referred to as kon lou or kon loh wantan mee, is a type of noodles hand-tossed in a black sauce made with dark soy sauce. After the noodles were boiled, the Uncle dished them into bowls and then tossed them within the sauce mixture, making sure to coat the noodles. The Aunty then topped each bowl of Penang wantan mee with slices of char siu bbq pork, a handful of blanched choi sum, fried wantan, and some green onions. Ive eaten plenty of noodles, but I think this was my first time to try black sauce hand tossed noodles. I started off trying the pre-fried noodles, which were similar to instant packaged ramen noodles. At first I thought the fried noodles would be stir fried instead of boiled, but they were rather boiled, but just fried and dried before. The noodles had a crinkly texture and they were easy to chew. The sauce was slightly sweet, and to me it had a nice nutty flavor to it. The fresh egg noodles were dressed in the same exact dressing, but the noodles had a much different texture, that was much more silky and maybe a little more chewy. I think overall I preferred the fresh egg noodles better. Along with Penang kon lou wantan mee, they also had extra wantan dumplings at Lebuh Acheh Wantan Mee. To my delight, the wantan were probably my favorite items for lunch. The wantan were filled with minced pork and minced shrimp, and nice bits of water chestnut. But what I really like about them was that the bowl of soup was nicely flavored with sesame oil and sesame seeds - the dumplings were delicious. Lebuh Acheh Wantan Mee Address: Located on Lebuh Acheh in George Town, Penang, Malaysia Open hours: About 7 am 1 pm daily, so its a place for breakfast or an early lunch Prices: Our bowls of wan tan mee cost 4 MYR each and the wantan dumplings were 1 MYR per piece, and we had a bowl with 5. Our total bill came to 13 MYR How to get there: Lebuh Acheh in George Town is parallel to Lebuh Armenian. From Canon street, just turn onto Lebuh Acheh and the restaurant is on the left side of the road

hi Mark, the sauce generally consists of dark soy sauce (made with dates and soy hence it's sweet, pork lard (if you are lucky you get some crunchy chunks too, pepper, sesame oil and some stock. the dumplings you ordered separately usually have mince pork (3 part fat and 7 part meat, water chestnuts, prawns. of course comes in a bowl of hearty broth with greens and drizzle of garlic oil

Wantan mee is a great discovery for me at Penang. I ate one at Gurney Drive, the ones at the back. It was delicious, I kept coming back for more. Assam Laksa is also delicious, you should try Pasembur, Oyster Omelette, Penang style Rojak, and their fishball. I also enjoyed their vegetarian dishes at a hospital canteen when I accompanied my family, it was so good

It's great to see that you first tried the dishes as they were made, so that you can experience the creations made by these passionate people, before adding the sauces. When I was a kid I used to add chilly sauces to my food straight away and my mum taught me a lesson about appreciating the dishes in their original states before altering them with extra flavourings.

The videos should come with a warning. I was with a group in Penang recently, what I noticed is that all the people in food and touristy stuff are ready to cheat you. The hidden charges and extra Billings is terrible. The Chinese food and Indian Muslim food are the same. even the hotels don't want to issue you a proper bill

dude you really loves chilly, one portion small 4 ringgit and big portion 5 ringgit? you order 2 noodles and 5 dumpling, dumpling 1 ringgit each, so 8 ringgit plus 5 ringgit = 13 ringgit, 50 cent for the drinks? very cheap. GREAT
