Welcome to Ha Giang, in the mountains of northern Vietnam, on the border of China. Today we re with Mr. Thien at his homestay where he and his family will be cooking a full Tay People festival meal - including a five colored sticky rice, a whole duck, a whole pig, and a fish. A big thank you to YESD Travel Vietnam for making this happen: Highly recommended for authentic and responsible tours in Vietnam. When we arrived they were already beginning the meal preparations. We were lucky to see the entire cooking process from start to finish. One of the traditional foods of the Tay People is five colored sticky rice, each color made from a natural coloring and steamed. Along with the sticky rice we had a huge assortment of pork dishes, including fresh blood and organ sausage, boiled meat, grilled meat, and probably my favorite of the meal - roasted duck stuffed with Kumquat leaves. When the food was ready, they presented it on trays over banana leaves with a chili dipping sauce. Food in Northern Vietnam is not only about eating, but it s about socializing, talking, drinking, and eating together.

Mark's videos are amazing and I have been watching since the pandemic lockdown. His facial features are unchanged all this time which is truly amazing! I do prefer the sea-food offerings though. The detail that each video goes into the cooking is unique. Very natural chopping slicing dicing steaming frying sounds. I am learning from the MASTER. Cheers

Ugh! I always hate these village meal episodes. I mean, I understand the point of them is to help showcase these vivid and varied cultures to ppl in the world who would otherwise not know about them. But they also suck because they're not experiences that we could go and enjoy & experience.

My wife family side is VN, 20 years in America or so and she only eats, like VN food. Yes, we eat Chinese, Taiwanese, American food too but maybe 1x or 2x a month. Not very much. It's almost like if I moved to Italy but don't eat Italian food, drinks, and stick with American food

This would be a tough vlog for vegetarians and vegans to watch. Luckily I am not either. I am a meat lover and this made my mouth water! Kudos to Mark for trying everything. He has reached Bourdain levels of willingness to try everything.

how many videos in Vietnam do you plan to release? By the way, always fascinating to see things in my own homeland that I m not aware of/haven t experienced. This video and its cooking process is just too extreme for my taste though

Great choice of a homestay that actually makes authentic vietnamese food, not altered to (some) tourists' palates.
This is the best Vietnamese series by Mark yet. So much nostalgia looking at these dishes.

16: 30 Oh my! Notice how the fish flesh moves once the liquid is added? I suspect it's lime juice or something acting as an electrolyte and sending electrical love into that nice fresh fish!

I am in a nursing home learning to walk again and have not been able to cook since 12/15/21 today I get to cook and it is a good thing because you always make me hungry

Kind of silly how society tends to drift away from old tradition. Tradition we know nothing of. We are so weird, while Mark is lucky to experience a great meal.

Hey Mark, have you ever gone to Canada (Quebec) to try out the food? I am very curious because it would be sooo different from the kind of food you usually eat: )
