Fat Birds Are Easy Prey: Fulmar Hunting in the Faroe Islands

In the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic, baby fulmar hunting is an annual August activity. The Faroese depend on seasonal hunting and fishing as a major part of their diet and lifestyle. At the end of each summer, baby fulmar birds fall from their nests in the fjords, where they bob in the water because they are too fat to fly. During the week or so before they manage to lose weight and take off, the Faroese go out in boats to scoop them from the sea and eat them. MUNCHIES went baby fulmar hunting with local H-gni Mohr, a writer by profession and a hunter in his spare time. He caught birds for his family and friends to last throughout the coming year. He showed us, via the fulmar feast, what it means to get a local meal in the Faroe Islands. Read: This Is What Happens When You-re Too Fat to Fly

As a 14 year old Faroe Islander, I don't understand why people say that we can't eat fish, pilot whales and fat birds. It has been our meals, everyday, for the past 200 years, so why stop now? We kill the animals so fast, that they're not in pain. The whales get a cut in the neck, and die right away. If you do it wrong and if the whale's in pain, you're no longer allowed to kill whales. -I'm not a big lover of fat bird, but I eat it if it's on the table. You eat what you get. -I spend a lot of time in the summer outside, helping my grandpa, my uncle and dad, with the sheeps and birds. it's just our way of living our lives.

I think it's great that they live their lifestyle like this. They don't overhunt and only take what they need. I don't live a lifestyle like this but I think I would like to someday. A lot of people will complain that what they are doing to the birds is inhumane, but if you just see how pigs and chickens are grown for mass consumption you would be terrified. Chickens are raised in weeks in crowded spaces, fed way to much food to fatten them up, then ruthlessly killed, so I don't see why people are complaining about this. I think it's totally fine, I would do it without a second thought.

Considering there are more people now in that island, and there are more of them hunting the bird, I don't think they're quite honest about hunting just for private&family&friends eating. I think most of their families &friends would also send each other the birds they each hunted too. So they would sell those birds to the market.

I am wondering why there is anything alive still on these savage animals? What comes next. tourists? -The remarkable is the joy these people seem to get. -Well. if all people were such, the next phase are cannibals and zombies teaming up.

People very angry yet do not recognize with is our food and cultures. Go cry about it. -I understand however arguments of ensuring our beautiful creatures are not endangered and killing them in humane ways.

I can't wait for stem cell meat to explode. Killing animals for meat just seems so time-consuming and inefficient. I have no interest to partake in any of the traditions that come with killing for food.

-As a person of color, vegans have zero right to criticize and judge Native people-s, and people of color for having a traditional diet of meat. White vegans need to quiet down

I don't understand why you kill animals like that. Whales. Tradition? That's no tradition, kill for fun! It's a shame that you called it tradition! Shame for the human species!
