Nearly 1, 700 People Live Underground In The Australian Desert, But Why? Would you sleep underground in the middle of this desert? This is what nearly 1, 700 people do every night. In the Australian desert-where temperatures reach almost 120-F (50-C) during the day and plummet to freezing cold levels at night-there are 1, 762 people who live completely underground. -But why?

I have lived in this town. Underground is GREAT -. Just make sure you have plenty of back up lighting too because if there's a blackout for any reason it will be TOTALLY PITCH BLACK from being underground. ------. The town is not far off from a MAIN HIGHWAY that goes through the middle of Australia. I would have prefered if it were not so close to the main highway myself.

I visited there in the 90s. All the houses I saw had above ground living space as well as underground. It's not too hot to live above ground most of the year and it cools down a lot at night. They also have an amazing underground hotel. The biggest problem there is frequent scares of water shortages.

Near Fresno, CA there is the underground gardens. It was a 19th homestead made by an Italian immigrant by digging underground passages and a house with periodic sky lights to allow light in. It gets really hot there so I can understand why someone would do that.

The creativity of the making of this place is amazing but the destruction on the surface from the mining operations is equally amazing. Horrifying actually.
